Time to Paint the D100.

Time to Paint the D100. - 12/03/13 10:19 PM

Decided it was time for paint on the D100. I do like the patina look. But after 3 years it was starting to looks a little worse, so I decided to preserve it with new paint. Going with the same original two-tone paint scheme.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/03/13 10:20 PM

Started with the inside of the box since it was in the worst shape.

Box was pretty crusty. It was used as a "truck" at one point in it's life.

Welded up the rust on the bottom of the tail gate. (Should have just found a better tail gate).

Finally I get to ditch the tri-pod mount mirrors and install the pedestal mirrors.

You didn't even need to paint it, just removing those mirrors made the truck!

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/04/13 12:21 AM

I have a similar two-tone paint on my '86 Ramcharger, no side mirrors and a lot more to do before I can think about paint

Wow! You have been busy, jstollfu! What did you use to get your bed stripped so clean?
Nice work

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/04/13 05:48 PM

In retrospect I should have removed the bed completely and had it sand blasted. But unfortunatly, I have no way to transport the bed except on the frame of the truck. So I used 2 inch bristle discs to strip the ribs on the sides of the bed. Then I used a couple of wire brush cups on a grinder to strip the loose rust off the bed floor. Then I put 4-5 coats of Navel Jelly rust remover on the floor to get the deep down embeded rust off. That Navel Jelly really works, it has to sit for hours, not mins and takes a few coats but it cleaned up the bed floor fairly well.

It looks really good. I'm in the same boat as you, should get it blasted but no way to get it there. But its one of the last things on my list.

my 74 extended cab that i had was painted the exactly like your truck. it is looking good. i have a clean shaved tail gate with a flip kit that would look good on there.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/06/13 04:26 PM

I had a smoothed tail gate with the handle flip, and a rear roll pan on my 84 d150. I liked the look. However, this one is going to stay stock in appearance. Same two tone colors, as ugly as the colors are they have grown on me. All the stock trim stays. Hopefully I can get out in the garage this weekend, I feel like I sold my soul to the paint store yesterday for supplies.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/06/13 08:20 PM

Seeing that you live in Michigan, how do you heat your garage? I live in the "wet side" of Washington state and while today's temp will be mid 30s, my attached garage is not heated by itself. So the question remains, how do you heat your garage area so that you can work comfortably and safely?

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 12/06/13 09:13 PM

My garage is small, 24x24 and it is semi insulated, the ceiling, peak, overhead door, and two of the walls. Ihave one of those 50,000 BTU natural gas heaters mounted high on one end. I can warm it even on the coldest days into the 80's if I want. I usually keep it in the mid 40's all the time and turn it up when I'm out there. In the old days I used to use one of those Dual Mr Sun Radient heaters on a propane bottle with a box fan behind it to move air. And that would make it comforatable. The NG heater is the way to go if you can.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 03/21/14 02:34 PM

Been awhile since I've done much to the truck. In December I slipped on the ice and fell in a bad way. I pulled the quad and tore the ACL in my right leg. Which kept me from doing anything in the garage for about 2 1/2 months. Combine that with the miserable winter we had. I just started back on the project recently. I did get the inside of box roughed out and primed.

Removing paint from the body. Truck is very solid. Only ran into a couple small spots of rust.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 03/21/14 02:44 PM

At some point the paint must have flaked off under the side mouldings. Then it sat out like that as there is some pitting on the box side. However there is no rust through. The other side of the box did not have this problem.

Other side sanded. No rust surprises. Truack is extremely solid for it's age.

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 03/26/14 12:48 AM

If only there was a way to guarantee it wouldn't rust, I'd clear coat it. Oh well, it'll look great back in its original colors. The rest of us can only wish to start with such a solid foundation.

The 72-80 Dodge trucks have the nicest style. I love the shapes. They resemble the other Mopars of the time like the C body fuselage and 71-72 Plymouth B bodies.
They make a 73-80 Chev look like a cardboard box

I got it mostly put back together. Drove it up to the gas station late last night snapped this pic. Will get some better pics out in the sun this weekend and post them up. Josh-

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 05/16/14 04:32 PM

You are right about the lines. This truck does not have a flat panel on it. (Maybe the hood) but the sides have alot of compound curves. This becomes painfully apparent when doing the body work! Josh-

Truck wears all it's original sheet metal, there was no major rust repair, a few small pin holes were welded.

1st outting was a small parade that kicks of the festival that benefits my daughters school. Yup, I let all those kids in the back with fresh paint. I had several large moving blankets in the back. Kids had a blast throwing candy.

I did much of the work myself. I paid for final body work, primer, block, sand, Repeat. Spray, (two tone) Wet Sand & Buff. Around 2k for materials and labor. He used PPG DBC base. And PPG Concept Clear. Josh-

Truck looks awesome! What size rim and tires are those? And Offset? looking at buying some 17's for my 78 this summer. Your truck has a great stance and look to it.
Posted By: jstollfu

Re: Time to Paint the D100. - 05/23/14 02:43 PM

I beleive the fronts are 17x7 w/ 215/40's. The rears are 17x8 with 245 or 255/60's. The wheels are Riddler's, a Chinese knock off but the price is right. This will be the 4th summer running those rims. And they have held up well, the roads here in SE michigan are a terrible pot hole ridden mess and I've nailed a few potholes over the years and the wheels are still spinning true. Unfortunately they do not make these Riddlers in a 18" wheel, I would like to put 18's on the back to fill up the wheel well a litte more. Josh-

All the trim was NOS, came from several different NOS suppliers. Brads NOS, Valley Vintage, Arizona Parts, Ebay..etc, Took about a year to gather it all. I felt fortunate to find all the peices. The only thing I didn't buy NOS were the exterior mirror bases.

Rear bumper is comming off this winter and getting rechromed, and I'm going to give the interior some attention. Josh-
