overheating 02 Ram 1500 - 11/28/13 01:43 AM

Just running this past any of you truck owners. I've got a 02 1500 with the 4.7 and it gets hot pretty quick. It has a new thermostat. It gets hot enough to puck out the tank. The owner thinks it may be the water pump. I think it's just the radiator. Any opinions would help.

Electric fan coming on?I replaced 4 fan clutches on an 07,would start to overheat under load. May have already blown a headgasket, does not take much overheating to blow one on a 4.7.

This one does not have an electric fan. It has a regular clutch and fan direct drive from the motor. I checked the oil and it did not have signs of water so I hope we don't have a head gasket problem.

I bet you're right. 11 years of dust is settled in the fins. Pressure washer and flush the fins until you see clear water coming out of it.

If its the radiator one side will be noticeably colder than the other side. If a 4.7L is overheated it can warp the cylinder head enough that the gasket loses it's seal. There's a spot in the deck surface where the coolant passage is close to the bore and that's where it usually leaks when hot. So if you have the heads off make sure they are checked for flatness...
