2001 Jeep GC 4.0 4x4 auto trans replacement?? - 11/10/13 03:24 AM

Any pointers? GC has Quadratrac II, AWD system. Plan is to pull it on the ground from the bottom (front of truck up), leaving the 4.0 in place. Drop drive shafts and remove the cross member and transfer case?

You got me digging further... 42 is front wheel drive trans. GC has (I think?)a 45RFE (or later 545RFE). Made good progress getting it out today. Parts store lists spin on filter and valve body filters... Have not found the spin on filter yet, will need to trace down the cooling lines.

You have a 42RE trans. It will only have 1 filter, 45RFE and 545RFE transmissions are found only behind 4.7 and 5.7 hemi powered Grands.

Okay, thanks for the clarification! I've got some parts to return to the NAPA guys & get them to look up the right stuff...

Removal is going easier than expected. No significant rust to deal with. A few odd braces/rods above and below the trans, I suppose to counter driveline torque.

Hopefully one of the torque converter bolts is offset so they can only bolt to the flex plate one way? If they are offset, it appears minimal. I guess to reduce vibration?

96 and up trucks and Jeeps use a 90 degree converter bolt separation. They no longer use the offset hole. That was mainly for externally balanced engines with a weighted torque converter. Instead of putting the balance weight on the converter, they moved it to the flexplate on engines that required external balancing.

Sweet! That's a relief. Just bolt it up and go sounds like.

Got the replacement 42re installed after a false start or 2. Now I'm having shifter adjustment problems with the neutral safety switch. No start unless you push on the shifter rod on the side of the trans to give a hair more travel than the linkage wants to give it. How do you adjust the cable? Is the adjustment under the console at the shifter? Didn't see any adjuster underneath the truck.

The shifter cable adjustment was underneath the console inside the cab. Starts fine now, and Park is Park. Now I have a bad vibration at 25-35 mph that I need to track down. I'll check the obvious, U-joints. Something is shaking this thing BAD.

Got out today between storm systems and crawled under the Jeep. Found that my GF's son didn't center the rear U joint in the yoke. They tried to make the design goof proof, but he still missed it. Loosened the straps and centered the joint, now the vibration is gone. Next sunny day I want to go over everything one last time before it goes back on the road.
