92 5.2 L Questions and swap for 78 318 D100 - 11/01/13 01:59 PM

For sale locally is a '92 5.2L and trans out of a B250. Suposedly with 85k miles, engine and trans pulled because of rusted frame.

Questions ----
I assume this is a magnum engine?
If so, how hard/easy to swap into my 78 D100 and replace the asthmatic 318LA that's in there now? Supposedly the B250 engine comes with complete engine harness.

Is there any value for the B250 trans? I have no idea what it is. Don't know anything about trans newer than 727 or 904.

If the swap is not terribly hard/expensive what is a fair price for the engine by itself or the engine/trans combo? He is asking $500 but willing to take offers. Wants to get rid of it seems.

92 was first year of Magnum 5.2, 93 was first year for Magnum 5.9

should be a Magnum.

but it'll be OBD-I which doesn't have any aftermarket support for tuning the engine if you make upgrades from stock, and pretty sure it'd be TBI as well. If you wanted to swap the truck to EFI, you'd be better off to go OBD-II. It's MPFI and has tuning options.

but, $500 for a complete engine/trans is not a bad price. not great either...about average for a used "junk 318" that nobody wants.

All Magnums are MPFI
If you want to do the swap with FI get all of the wiring including the dash that way you have a chance of everything working the way it is supposed to

Do you have A/C that you want to use? That makes a difference on which direction your swap has to go & how much $$$$ it costs

I don't believe the dash and wiring are available..my 78 D100 does have air, not working at this time but it's all in place..I would like to keep that system in place.

To retain your A/C without having custom hoses made & such
You use a Professional Products Crosswinds intake along with a Hughes cam snout extender & put your original timing cover & all on it
Your original compressor & brackets will bolt direct without mods as long as you use the Crosswinds intake
That's how I did my CrewCab & how the Wagon is getting done
Anyone who states otherwise has never done the swap nor have they done it as many times as myself
If you need belts you just order them for your truck & they fit the first time

No issues with engine mounts and bolting to my trans?

Any sense of a fair offer price on just the engine alone? Not trying to screw anybody but don't want it in return either..

That's the intake but only fits with a RV2 compressor like you should have already.

When I buy a Mag motor I usually buy a whole truck generally with a bad trans or wrecked
I usually pay between $5-700 for a whole truck depending on the miles & have usually $200 invested when finished
$300-400 would be a good price

Get the Y pipe if possible it's 2 1/4" to 3" outlet

The transmission should be a 518 which is an overdrive version of the 727.

It will be a lockup, with overdirve, and its not terribly difficult to make that work using the PATC kit that uses some pressure switches, and a vacuum switch to control both.

You would need to have the tailshaft housing removed for it to bolt to your transfer case. and would also need to get driveshafts from a 92-93 W150 donor, or have your rear shaft shortened, and a longer front shaft made.

But, the benefits of the overdrive really show up at the gas pump.

Jamie, he's got a D series


You can shift the 518 with toggle switches
The center pin in the plug gets fulltime power while the other two are switched grounds
The PATC kit is great but way overpriced
You can build their kit with new parts for $50-60 or rob those same GM switches from any GM vehicle from 1981-1992 at the jy for $10 or less
I do the latter being the Scotsman I am

If you do the 518 get a truck crossmember if you can
You can convert a standard non 518 one but the driveshaft angle will be wrong

my 92 518 is a 2wire.

The 2wire A518 uses a non-lock up converter which is nice if you've already spent money on a stall converter for your 727tf...
