So, I changed the injectors in my Dakota..

So, I changed the injectors in my Dakota.. - 10/23/13 05:57 PM

Picked up a set of Ford blue top injectors for my Dakota. I've heard that they will help pick up some gs mileage plus give you more power to boot. The truck is basically stock except for a polished TB (stock size), re-positioned crank sensor and the Ford injectors. I swapped the injectors this morning. Really a simple swap. Started it up and noticed it ran smoother and had better throttle response. I let it idle for about 10 minuets then took it for a ride. Right off, the "seat dyno" felt better. Throttle response was better, it felt a little peppier as well. The truck was getting about 14-15 around town. I don't expect to see a change this tank but hopefully I'll see an improvement by the next tank. I will keep yous guys posted with results.

Sounds like a win win

Tell me about this Crank Position Sensor relocation...

My 92 Dak seems to like to go through a CPS about every 3-4 months. Doesn't seem to matter which brand I buy. OE or aftermarket.

That's interesting. A friend of mine said that he installed Injectors for the SRT Hemi engines in his 96 Ram V10 engine and also noticed smoother idle and more power. His install was a bit more involved through. I'm waiting to here from him for results after a few tanks of gas.

It's a gimmick that gets you a few degrees advance timing. You slot the holes in the CPS so you can move it and trucking the computer into firing the spark early.

Pretty sure those FMS injectors are the same flow rate as the stock injectors which allows you to swap without messing up fuel trims/AFRs, their advantage is that it's a 4-hole design over a single hole, do they spray a finer 'mist' and give better fuel atomization

Exactly. The Ford injectors have a better spray pattern. They actually atomize the fuel instead of spraying a stream like the stock ones. I've felt a difference in how the truck runs. It idles smoother, the throttle is a lot crisper. On a cold start, it would rev to about 1200 rpm then idle at about 800. Now, on a cold start, it doesn't break 1000 rpm. There is no more fuel odor sitting at a stop light. I'm going to run an injector cleaner through this tank and then change the plugs and see how its doing. The blue tops are supposed to be 22.5lbs @ 43 psi. I believe the yellows stock ones are 17lbs @ 43 psi.

What's the part number or application for the Ford injectors?

The ones I picked up were from a 88-92 302. Those are the same style of hi-impedance units. Ford blue top 24lb injector. Be sure that they are the 4-hole style injectors tho because the Bosch gen 1 and 2 look the same.

Will they work in a 1998 5.2? You didn't mention the year or engine of your Dakota

Mine s a 92 with a 5.2. I'm not positive if the obd2 cars use the same impedance. Best way to find out is to check the resistance of the ones you have now. Just unplug the injector and use an ohm meter to check it. You may need the newer style low impedance injectors. The ones I took out ohmd at 13-13.5 ohms. The Ford ones I put in were 14 ohms. I just found this. Might be helpful. http://www.pavementsucks.com/board/thread-larger-injectors

Thanks for the link. Looks like I'll stay with stock stuff for now.

The factory 1992 5.2 injectors were approximately 18 pounds per hour rating at a lower than typical 35 psi
(3 Bar metric pressure or 43.5 psi equivalent is considered standard for rating injectors)

the better idle smoothness would be expected if the air fuel ratio were now richer due to the bigger injector capacity

the better throttle response and seat dyno feel
could also be coming from the richer air/ fuel ratio

over time the OBD-I engine computer will adjust the fuel trim memory positions AFF and AAF to "learn" a leaner air fuel ratio so that the oxygen sensor reports the correct 0.5 volt averaged out value that is "stochiometric"
just a fancy Geek word meaning
just enough oxygen is there to combine with the fuel

the AFF and AAF memories can take hours to adjust
and may not be able to go more than 20% less fuel per squirt

with the bigger Ford injectors you might be able to run E85 fuel

E85 fuel might give a 10 to 20% full throttle horsepower boost.
When Consumer Reports tested flex fuel cars on E85 it typically cut a full second off the 0 to 60 mph time.

E85 fuel might dissolve a lot of gunk out of the tank,
some of which might get caught up on the little protection screens at the top of the Ford fuel injectors

unless the local E85 fuel costs less than 70% of gasoline per gallon you wont save any money per mile driven
