That large hex is part of the fan and has to be screwed off of pump first. There are tools sold to get it done, but it usually can be knocked loose with a long punch or chisel. Right hand thread I believe.

Thanks buildanother. I have the waterpump with the clutch and fan on the concrete and just found that a 1 7/16 end wrench will fit the hex shaft. If I understand you, I will put the 4 fan bolts back in and see if it will loosen. I`ll let you know. Thanks and God bless you, Wayne

It is apart! The hex nut is made on to the fan clutch; so what I did was use the 17/16 wrench and put a pipe wrench on the impellers. No other option that I could see. It is designed to be tightened or loosened with the belt holding it. No trade in of used water pump this time, the impellers are bent; but I am very glad to get it apart. Thanks Wayne

I think there should be 4 holes in the face of the waterpump? I built a spanner wrench to hold it while I removed the fan. The belt alone wasn't enough to hold it.

I just did mine on my 5.2 1995 Dakota. Since the WP is going bye-bye anyway, I didn't care if it broke. all I did was take my biggest Craftsman screwdriver and pound it in to wedge it between the pulley and the WP housing. It then held the pulley tight so I could remove the nut with a large crescent wrench. And the old WP was fine for a core too.

Thanks everybody, Great ideas. The aluminum housing was not hurt, so they took it for a core after all. O`Reilly`s even gave me a 2% discount the salesman he is allowed to do that even though I do not have an account there. I guess that you just have to ask for it. Wayne

Man you do a lot of work.I did tons at the shop.My air chisel and a few bumps on a flat of the big nut and they always come loose.Takes me about 2 minutes to take one off.Just did the one on my kids 99 a month or so ago.Only ones you have to be careful of are the left hand threads.Had a guy destroy one at work because he didnt read the caution on the shroud. It was a diesel though.Once broke loose they spin right off.Same when installing.Just spin it on and give the flat a tap with the air chisel.Rocky

While on the subject, my waterpump had to be replaced on my 360 Magnum 'cause the bearing was screwed. No wonder: that humongous fan on there leaning on a bearing not much bigger than your thumb didn't last very long.
Solution: ditched the fan, put a new water pump on and went to an electric fan. Fuel mileage went up and the water pump should last 5 times longer.
Hopefully last longer anyhow. Changing the water pump is a bit of a chore and would not like to have to do it again anytime soon.
