Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150?

Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150? - 06/01/13 07:43 AM

I got a brand new 2011 Goodwrench crate 350 in a deal for a failed hotrod project.

I have a money maker D150 that has a very spent (200K++)318 in it. I use it to tow a 18' open car trailer. I just rebuilt the 727 and put new brakes all around.

I know advanced adapters make a setup to mate the chivy to t-flight.

My question is has anyone ever seen a chevy engine in a old mopar truck? If so what did they do for mounts and exhaust?

I've not seen this creature you talk about.
I imagine welding a plate to your exiting mounts and drilling a shivy pattern. Then find center dump mannys.

Your Dodge made 200,000 so far, the GM engine will be lucky to make half that without changing parts on it a few times. Sell the crate (they sell easily because people need them) and buy a used 318 or 360 it will be a much easier install, will last longer and you'll be able to sell the truck if you wish.

I think a decent used 318 would be cheaper and less hassle than the parts to make the change.

i wont be a hater. i love the idea. would be perfect, to prance around town in, waving to all the fellas and whistling showtunes out the window. a rainbow sticker across the rear bumper would be the uber-fabulous icing on the super dreamy chevy cake !!!

but seriously. just because something is possible doesnt mean it should be. ditch the crate and scoop a magnum from a wreck in the boneyard.

this statement is so far out in left field its pitiful that chevy will run mile for mile if they are both treated the same.I have a gmc with 170,000 miles so far and it all original and will still pull my 35' rv with no problem no smoke no leaks.

Well i found out the adapter plate is going to run me almost $500 so getting the truck repowered cheaply with what i got isnt going to happen this way.

Oh well

O-Kay.. Since the 350 Goodwrench crate motor you got a deal on, it may be worth looking into for a swap. But ask youself these questions:

Will the Chevy motor power output/rpm range be efficient to pull my 18' trailer comfortably?
(Remember the 318 is a low-rpm motor!)
How much cash outlay for adapters, both engine and bellhousing, if going to the Chevy motor?
Do I have enough clearance for headers/exhaust manifolds and pipes, as well as oil pan/steering gear/tranny lines and linkage?
Modifications to throttle linkage possibly and radiator hose positions?
Total cost involved overhauling original 318 motor vs the total cost of installing the Chevy crate motor?
Or..re-ring and replace bearings in the 318, if everything looks good (no heavy wear or damage). Definitely change the timing chain and gears, as well as the oil pump and pickup assembly. Pulling the pan and checking the conditions of the rod and main bearings will tell you how worn the assembly is.

Not knocking the idea, but just giving some food for thought
here. Basically it boils down to using all the resources that is in front of you. Always weigh the odds. Owners choice!

As states above, it's your truck. Do what you will.
But having said that, you did ask what we thought!
I think you should sell the crate engine, and get a good 360. Even if you have to start from scratch, and build it your self. You know, that might be a better way to go anyway! Then you'd have just what you want in the engine so it will do what you want it to do easily.
Not wanting to . Just my thoughts, you asked for them.

Re: Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150? - 06/02/13 12:53 AM

I would not do that.......period. That motor wouldn't be hard to sell and you could buy lots of Mopar options........as far as used motors go.

Re: Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150? - 06/02/13 01:15 AM

There's a lot of closet Chevy guys on this board, I would advertise it in the trade section and see what they can come up with for a decent trade.

Sell the Chevy and pickup a Magnum for cheap, more power and it will drop right in. Carb intakes are cheap for the magnum motors.

Re: Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150? - 06/02/13 05:04 AM

Only the people on this forum will give you a hard time about it. Most folks wouldn't care, or would think it an improvement. It has been done a lot, typical hot rod stuff, and the usual way to install a different make motor is to put on the stock mounts set the deal into the bay get it lined up and weld it in. of course this is over simplified. Speaking of simple, the advice to sell the crate and get a Mopar motor is the easiest way to go.
Myself, I wouldn't bother changing brands.

Personally I would never do such a thing, and I agree its not worth the hassle compared to putting a Mopar engine in it...but if you really want to do it use a chevy tranny and convertor!

No, I asked if anyone has seen it done before. I dont really care what others think. Its a work truck not a show car. I could keep the powertrain totally "in the closet"

People seem to put 350's in everything no matter the make. Import or demestic. I figgered someone might have seen it done with a ram. And I was wondering if I could get it done with what I have here now... I got with it universal hotrod style frame mounts everything else.

Anyways I replied above that the $500 adaprter plate has kinda sunk the whole idea of getting it done on the cheap.

And I already got a few bites on the chivy crate so it looks like this frankan-ram will never be

In 1983 I bought a 1980 Chevy shortbed with a Ford 460 and C6 in it.
Was a pretty decent Scotsdale swb.
But the 460 was a tired puppy, skipping and smoked, running most of the time on about 6 cyl.
Only 3 years old truck ...

but I had this fresh 454/T400 ...

Re: Dont hate.. Chevy 350 in a D150? - 06/02/13 05:36 PM

Not worth doing. If you had a complete doner truck it may be worth the time. Without a complete truck to pick from the cost of swapping a crate motor alone in is cost prohibitive. Doing a swap like that you would use the GM transmission as well as all the other small parts to finish it off. Without having those parts it will cost a small fortune to complete.

For your viewing pleasure--or unpleasure....BBC in a Dodge--actually fits real well and a small block gets lost in there. Gobs and gobs of room. BUT...

Not worth it for a cheap swap, as you are finding out. You have to really want it to do it. You can pick up a lower mileage 318 or 360 (prefered in my eyes for what your doing) for around $500 and it would basically bolt in. Get a carbed intake and your there---done, and I am not biased either way for this deal. I am sure you could get a $1,000 for the crate and you'd have every bit of the dollars you need to put a magnum 360 in and make it run. That is doing it cheap AND fast.

you guys may not know but there is a mopar 904 tranny that bolts up to a chevy 350----these trannys were specd into postal jeeps powered by an iron duke 4 cylinder---then were made famous by Butch Brooks of loveland colorado who took these 904's filled them with 998/999 internals and sold them to offroad jeep racing teams that were running those hot corvette motors---he told me that he sold probably 200 of them over the years---another thing about butch ---he is a living legend in the western US among the offroad racers and some drag racers---a couple years ago at the rock crawling world championship in moab his trannys placed 1st,2nd,3rd and 5th---he offered the 4th place guy with a manual a free rebuild anytime----butch is down to his last chev/904 core and doesnt think he will ever find another since they have been out of production so long....bob

I've run across a few sweptline era Dodges with 350s in them. They usually have a GM transmission as well. One guy actually built a 71 D100 show truck with a 454.

There is a guy running around my town with a early 2000s Cummings truck converted to a GM 350, but he used a GM trans as well.

Could I do? NO, but at the same time I had little reserve on swapping a 318 in a Chevy truck to replace a tired 350 once.

Probably would have gotten a better response from a Chevy board then a Mopar board.
Bottom line, its your truck, if cheap is the goal, buying a turbo 350 is probably cheaper then buying an adapter, and you could sell your rebuilt 727. Gene

That was the way spell check corrected it. Had to give you something to feel important about.

I used to be the publisher of a club newsletter, If there was not some mistake someplace in a news letter, some people feel somehow useless. They have to have something to point out that was incorrect to feel useful and important. I do my best to make everyone feel useful and important. Misspelled words, incorrect punctuation, and incorrect grammar are there for your benefit. Gene

I once saw a buick v6 in a dodge farm truck once...so nothing will shock me.

Seeing as to how it's not the easiest/cheapest swap, why not just go to some shops and see what you'll get...

...or even better, call some scrap yards and see if they'll trade their best, lowest mileage magnum 360.

Having had pretty much a bone stock 360 magnum in my LRT, it was very very nice. Pushed me to 15.1's in the 1/4 and towed my buddy's Buick GSX like a champ (once spinning the tires through an intersection). Got 17 mpg unladen and idled w/ 24 inches of vacuum. Great engine...

This, Magnum 360 with a 4bbl and electronic ignition. Sell the 350, if it is waht you say it is you should have no problem getting decent money for it and you wont have to search for the little parts to "make it work"

you can swim upstream if you want to or you can go with the flow but cheap and easy sounds a whole lot better than: Will it work?
