Weber conversion on a 318

Weber conversion on a 318 - 01/06/13 04:45 PM

My basic thought being since both the 4.2 AMC six and the 318 were both blessed with the piece of garbage carter BBD that the weber 32/36 kit as marketed for the 4.2 would also be suitable for the 318 ? Yes I know the linkage issues for the throttle and kickdown are going to require some work around but thats the least of my concern.

The backstory: I have been fighting with the POS (I cant say anything nice about it) Carter BBD on my B-van for awhile now. At idle the thing is flooding the engine like mad. Look down the choke plate and there is raw gas just pouring out of the venturi's. The step-up piston works fine but its still not cutting the gas flow at idle.

I have gone through the unit multiple times and everything appears to be in otherwise working order and within the range of adjustment as called for within the FSM. Short of converting to a 4 BBL the weber has really got my interest and I have heard nothing but praise about the unit.

Had a weber on a car before, it was an improvement but on a 318 I wouldn't do one. On my old jeep 4.2 I went and put on a holley 2bbl carb off of a mid 60's jeep. Holley 2300 series. Those are the ones that are basically the front half of a holley 4bbl carb. They are simple and use the same tuning parts as a 4bbl. That would be my choice if you don't want to go 4bbl.

4 bbl is the way to go, but if you have to have 2, the holley mentioned is a decent set up. you could always get a 4 into 2 adapter, and just run an edelbrock. or a holley 4 bbl.

A 32/36 Weber carb is a progressive carb. One barrel is primary and the other is secondary, at least all the ones I have seen!
Put it on a dual-plane intake on a 318 and it'll run really funny!

A 600 Holley four barrel is better in all respects, and tunable.

Poor man's cylinder delete/fuel management system! Just think, 4/8 cylinder power! LOL

To the op, why not just try to get another unmolested, (not high volume rebuilder rebuilt) carb, and go thru it yourself, the high volume guys often mix and match, not always with the best results.
The BBD may not be the greatest carb, but it would be far easier to make work.

That is something I had not thought about... It would run interesting

Checked out the Holley 2bbl offering, kinda 50/50 about it.

Ventured over to Edelbrock and am leaning towards the 500cfm AVS Thunder series w/electric choke and pickup a 4bbl intake to go with it. It is totally over the top for this application but gives me some reserve for down the road should I decide to turn up the wick. Is it going to be compatable with a torqueflite kickdown though without having to make a rig job ?

no rigging needed. just order the chrysler linkage adapter kit from edelbrock, if/when you order the intake and carb.

Ordered the edelbrock piece I mentioned above and picked up a used performer manifold in pretty clean condition. I am excited and really looking forward to being able to spend more time enjoying driving the van and far less time constantly having to pull the dog house and fiddle with something once this conversion and any subsequent fine tuning has been done.
