good shock for a W200 with a 4" lift? - 12/12/12 12:37 AM

Does anyone have any input on a good shock for a 73 W200 with a 4 inch lift? Its an all spring lift with no blocks, but I have really cheap gas shocks on it now and they suck. The truck is just used for general stuff, home depot, camping trips, etc. and not any really hardcore off roading. Anything to improve ride quality would be great.

It'd a leaf spring suspension un a truck. Not suppose to be smooth. All the lift companies sell shocks aswell

Look into Bilstein 5125 series shocks. They are made in custom lengths and are made for lifted vehicles. You just need to know what your fully extended and collapsed lengths are, and order the shocks that most closely match those lengths. I suggest going to allshocks.com.

I see its the 200 series. Are you running a 10 ply tire (load range E)? If so at what pressure.

You may just need to drop the tire pressure down to around 45-50psi. If your running a 10 ply at full 80psi for daily driving your going to get a pounding.

On my CTD I had the fronts at 50, and rear at 45psi for daily use.

If I towed, or hauled, then I would air them up.

Another option is to get a lower ply tire. If you don't haul, or tow heavy loads, get something in a load range C rather then the E. This is what I did with my Ramcharger with the 3/4 ton axles.

A different shock isn't going to do much for ride quality on a 3/4 ton Dodge.

Sorry, let me clarify. I'm aware a 3/4 ton truck on leaf springs with 35 inch load range E tires isn't going to ride well. However the shocks I have now haven't performed well. One of the shocks is alread acting like its blown, and even when new they didn't do a good job of damping wheel movement. I'm used to some good quality off road shocks on my jeeps, and I'm looking for something similar for the truck. I like old man emu shocks alot, but they don't offer anything for my truck, so I'm looking for other peoples input on what is a good shock for a truck like this.

I am sure there will be ten people that don't like them but I have been rocking Rancho 5000's on my 3/4 ton trucks with 33+ inch tires for years and they serve me well. My trucks play off road and I am cheap so it works well.

great shock! if i was to do it all again id have went with a nitrogen shock and not a gas shock. but i also offroad and haul heavy loads

Rancho 5000's are probably the best of the cheap entry level shocks. They're still a twin tube design, but they seem to work pretty well. Bilstein 5100 series would be a step up and not too much more money. They're a single tube design, a much better performing shock.

Stay away from the self branded shocks from mopst of the lift companies. Trailmaster, Skyjacker, Superlift, etc... They're all rebranded junk.

Agree with him. Blistering 5100 is a pain to find for a w series truck

What lift is on it now????



Sorry for the slow response, been busy at work. The shocks on it now are the cheapies that come with the rough country 4" all spring lift sold by Les Schwab.

I'm going to look into the Bilsteins 5100's next, although if anyone has any additional comments I'm definitely interested. I don't use the truck much in the winter so its not a big rush.

I went with Skyjacker Nitros on my '76 club cab when I added a 4" lift. N8017's in the front and N8068's out back. They seem to be fine. I use it for hauling wood mainly so a great ride isn't really what I was worried about.

I use the Rancho 5000', and 9000's. Also had good results with the Rough Country products

just curious if you ever got new shocks, what you ended up going with. what do you think?

i have an m880 and i'm thinking about going with soem alcan springs in the front and maybe some bilstein 5125 shocks....
