Looks good- saw a rusty one with same paint get crushed yesterday. Frame broke in half....
No easy way to go to 4.5 bolt pattern. Rear could be re-drilled (hacky) but fronts would need new hubs- are spindles compatible between the 2?

Re: My new ( to me ) 1989 Dodge D-100 shortbox ! - 12/16/11 11:04 PM

84 truck rotor or 76 new yorker rotors get the front

will take an earlier rear axle, cant just swap them/change in c-clip

c-body 8 3/4 is same as truck 8 1/4 or 9 1/4

the shackle flip with front hanger is good for 4-5 inches in the rear with axle floped on top of springs. can flip the front hanger also for another little bit.

A-body 8 3/4 bolts in and tucks 12" rims with 29x15x15 M/Ts in the fenders like mine.(did both my stepside and wide box)

3/4 or 1 ton pocketed lower control arms with stock 1/2 ton spring or shorter for the front, get offset upper bushing to help alinement.

very nice truck

What custom wheel choices are there , or do they all look like 4x4 wheels ?

Can I use wheels off a late model base Dodge van, the ones that are kinda like rally wheels ?

I think I know where I can get a set of those , IIRC they are 16's .. right ?

I run weld rims with 5 on 4.5 in my 88 440 truck

some of the bigger newer rims do swap over IIRC

the stock canyon sport rims are alum and have holes with a small cap, they look nice for stock

I am sure after market has some bigger custom rims

Daryl - Don't now if you remember my truck from about four years ago in Denton. It sits pretty low. You could have bought it pretty cheap, 446" motor and all. Wouldn't be much of a run around truck with the 4.88's in the rear but would get you anywhere close quick. Anyway, you can compare where the fender come to on my front and rear tires to your truck.

Lol

Yeah, wasn't looking for a race truck !
daily driver type thing

No, what I was wondering is do they make rims in the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern so I don't have to change it out to the 4-1/2

( I looked for a earlier model truck , prefer the egg crate grill and wanted the smaller BP )

But , everything I FOUND was pounded to snot

mine is a daily driver with a stock 440 with 75.000 miles, built from a rust free Kansas truck with 58.000 miles on it,best condition seat i have ever saw till seeing yours

yes they have plenty or after market rims and some of the other stock rims fit.

my stepside has the 5 on 5.5 wagon spoke rims with the 85 center caps and trim rings.

just check the axle register on the newer stock rims i dont care for any of the stock old or new myself

does it have the steering box frame brace?

swaybar?

i bet it wont have the dodge truck driverside lean to it with that low milage and nice shape.

the back seems a tad high, but ihave seen one stock in a long time.

is it a TBI roller cam 318?

nice truck

there are a few nice 5.5 wheels out there. a lot more 4.5s.

the 81/84 rotors are a bolt on. the rears can be redrilled along with the drum.. a 4.5 drum will work but the center hole needs to be enlarged to fit the axle register..

No, the ones I was thinking of look a lot alike the wheels you would see on a 76 Chrysler New Yorker

Its steel wheel , with a trim ring and a chrome center cap, they are steel, painted silver

The rotors will fit from 84-down. You can use the 4.5 axles from 84-down if you have a 81/4 rear the carrier is the same for those from 1966-1996 [as per Auburn Differential] If you have a 91/4 84' model axles are the key to the swap [according to the Chrysler parts catalog] A true 3/4 ton [1/2"lugs] does not have a pocketed control arm Trucks with 9/16"-5/8" lugs have a pocketed control arm. All vans 78-98 with 1/2" studs have pockets & correct size balljoints. Dakota Drop spindles & a balljoint reamer for the steering arm work. You ream from the opposite side so the tierods don't have to be turned over. A 3" drop spring for a 94up Ram will get you 2". The rear is up to you

Re: My new ( to me ) 1989 Dodge D-100 shortbox ! - 12/17/11 02:43 AM

According to Auburn Differential the end of the axle changed after 1983. I had them on the phone this week after I got your PM about your hydra loc. Now I haven't dug out my Factory parts catalog yet but if what the guy at Auburn Differential is right then that means that an 84 axle will work. {I just double checked their catalog & the installation instructions too} According to them the change was after 1983.The 8.25 will interchange. The end of the axle never changed. Bigdad's truck having a 318 will most likely have a 8.25 Bob

. 79-84 not anything older. Bearings changed from the info iv found. 81-84 2wd trucks/rc's are 5x4.5 4wds went to 5.5 in 80. Aint nothing hard about changing rotors or a rear axle so if you want 4.5 its easily obtained. Try looking at Summit Racing for rims in the 5.5bp. Your buddy had to modify those rims or he used spacers

ok we will say 84 from now on..
I had a 88 318/NP435 shorty.
I thought that it had a 8 1/4, but was quite surprised to find it had a 9 1/4 under it.
A check on the VIN proved it to be original.

Ok, can I swap in a earler AKA "better" rear ?
and achieve the 4 1/2 bolt pattern ?

Are those black, 4"+ mouldings on the lower body glued on or bolted on ?

I'd like to make it all dark blue , two tone does not ring my bell

I see no data sheet under the hood , guess Dodge ended that process in these years ?

And, the gear indicator does not work, sure its a cable piece, bet you can't get that anymore

is there a fix , or look in scrap yards ?

Id be interested in the fender and door mouldings.. the shortbox moulding wont work on my long box Dually..

I doubt I'll stip the moulding off if it leaves big holes to wled up underneath it

I'll have to see where we end up , body shop ,etc

I might even sell if before any of that happens

but, I'll look for more moulding in junk yards around here, they do show up at one yard often and if they do, the price is always fair

Thanks for all of your help & advice

stay tuned

I have 4 Pick-N-Pull type yards around here & there's a member here that has that perfect trim piece I bet. I bought a nearly new/NOS grille & shell with an unstained part# as well the rest of the nearly new trim off a truck that had been hit really hard in the bed side New clips & all for $63.00. The clock had 23K on it & it looked 23K I've passed up alot of nice trim for the square trucks No sense in hoarding you know.

I'd put a Swepty front bumper on the rear. If I remember right I used Swepty rear brackets when I done it on a 73 Shorty about 20 years ago or so. You can weld a plate to a piece of square tube & mount it on top of the frame. Bolt a spare tire winch to it & get rid of the ugly factory hang down under piece. I was a Swepty-72-80 only for 31 years before I actually took a liking to the 81-93 7 years ago. Bob

new headlight bezels are fair price from rockauto and tail lights

member thedodgeboys has stuff for them also,I got the full rubber set for mine

Allen had one roll pan left and he has some of those euro tail lights for them too.

the plastic piece for the trim are $$$$$$ when removed there are no holes per say but it will have a lot of the rivit/studs to be removed...in the lower corner of the cab,the trim piece does have a small hole were it bolts a clip to hold the trim on.

i shaved it all off of mine.

if the 8 3/8 10 bolt axle aka 8 1/4 does swap axles i have a set thats 5 on 4.5 if you want( is a complete rear axle 3.2? gear )

FYI.gear ratio will be stamped in the ring gear along with yr

i will look around for part #s for the rotors,i have the ticket somewhere when i got mine from autozone...50$ each

the gear indicater has a small box gizmo on the back of the gauge cluster that has a cable hook that hooks on a sloted arm on the colum.

its the first thing to go most times and if someone droped the colum loose and did not un-hook it it stretches it out of wack.

i will look at a few of the cluster I have and see if there is a good one if you need it

if you pull the heater control..very gently as the switch likes to break off of the rack.

I swaped all mine to 85 wire harness/colum and got rid of the turn sig dimmer and wiper stuff myself,it has problems when its beat to death...yours not so much probly.

Very nice truck! Did someone say silver?

Here is my '85 shorty. Original slant truck with OD 4, it now has a 318 in it with a cast OD-4 behind it. This was the motor and trans out of my '87 I wrecked.

When the original 8 1/4 kicked up (not welded right) I decided to run an 8 3/4 with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern to utilize my 15x8 stock steel wheels. Mine is from a '72-'74 truck.

The axle is flipped and it decided to kick up on me today so I plan to get it welded soon. I have about 2 to 3 inches of clearance between housing and frame.

On the front I am going to go with '81-'84 rotors so I can have matching bolt pattern.

OK here is a pic. Dont get jealous because it is silver.

What custom wheel choices are there , or do they all look like 4x4 wheels ?

Can I use wheels off a late model base Dodge van, the ones that are kinda like rally wheels ?

I think I know where I can get a set of those , IIRC they are 16's .. right ?

I know the rims you're talking about, I think they are the steel rims on the 94-01 1500's as well. To get those to work, your need to machine the center register from 3" to 3.5". Any machine shop with a lathe with at least a 16" swing could do it and it shouldn't be to much $ wise. I had an 89 shortbox that I put a set on and that's what I had to do. They fit great on the front but on the back they get really close to the box, I guess they have less offset that the stock 15" rims. I had 245/75/16 tires and they cleared by about 3/4", if I cornered to hard they would rub, not enough to do any damage to the tire or even hear or notice when you're driving but you could see it. with a low profile tire, you would have even more clearance and probably be fine.

As for aftermarket rims, there should be a ton, as the late 60's to 96 Ford half tons had the same bolt pattern and the same 3.5" center register. There seems to be no shortage of aftermarket rims on those things.

And just to clarify, what exactly changed on the 81-84 rotors? Is it just the machined diameter on the inside of the rotor where the bearing race presses into?

Uhhhh .. as far as I know, they were only on just the vans ?

My brother has a old retired work van and it had them so I called him to see if they could be had

He put them on his 91 4x4 Dodge

so, I guess that means they fit ?

Maybe after Christmas I go digging around a junk yard to look for a set

Vans still had the larger hub so the van wheels Will fit the pre 94 trucks without a problem. They also use the same control arm till 97 or so.
My cousin had a 96 or so shorty van and my mom had some 94 up 1500 rims for sale and when we went to put them on to see how they looked they wouldnt clear the hub. I dont think it matters if he finds wheels its already listed forsale

I agree,, the 8 1/4/8 3/8 axle shafts will interchange.

My 88 was a 318 NP435 shorty.
I thought it had a 8 1/4 till I had a counter clown buddy at a dealer run the numbers.
It came out to be a factory original equiped 9 1/4.
That 9 1/4 diff that I have was going into my 87 RC till it met its demise.

Yep, they made on 1500 series trucks and light duty vans, wheels that look a lot like that but they are 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern and the center cap has a goat head on it

That's a nice little truck. I'd love to build something like that too. Slammed, no moldings, 70s front bumper, pan in the rear, 91-93 grille, monotone, cowl hood and some Weld Wheels. There is one for sale around here. Think it's an 84, already has a 440 in it. Could probably get it for around 2k and it's pretty decent. Just have to keep telling myself, NO MORE VEHICLES right now.

Those are the rims I was talking about in my earlier post. YOU WILL have to enlarge the center from 3" to 3.5" if you get them off a 1500, unless, like mentioned earlier by another member (76dodgeboy I think), you get a set off a B250 van, those apparently have the larger hub hole. Any compotent machine shop can bore those out, either by lathe (probable method) or by mill with a rotary table

Nice truck, reminds me of the late 80s D100 2WD, Short bed ,6 cyl. I had awhile back. I have the same wheels as the van in the other post but with a smooth snap in center cap. they came off my friends 90 2WD Ramcharger. They are 15 inch, 5.5 bolt pattern, they look good on my 92 D150 and I haven`t seen them on too many other trucks, vans etc.

I'm just trying to find something in 5 on 5 1/2 that does not look like a 4x4 wheel

The guy paid a lot for the Radirs, $1380.00 for the set in 15x6 and 15x8's

Re: My new ( to me ) 1989 Dodge D-100 shortbox ! - 04/17/13 03:22 AM

Here is a list of things I would like to do

lower it some, not dumb low but, at least level

ramcharger rear bumper

change BP to 4 1/2 .. front simple but, rear ??

I wondered if anyone has taken the axles to the machine shop

cut down the register and re-drilled them for smaller bolt pattern ?

and I'd like to swap out the grill to a 84-85 style

after all thats done, paint the light blue to dark and remove the lower mouldings

or , sell it

Rear is not to bad if it's an 8.25 rearend just change axles and drum you can get them from a 84 and earlier. Probably will have to buy new drums because most earlier trucks used 10" brake and most 85' and up used 11" but the drums are not that expensive. Now if you have something besides an 8.25 rearend
