'56 Desoto and '68 Chrysler at closing service station - 03/30/24 08:56 PM

So the '56 Desoto has been parked behind this service station as long as I can remember but the place recently closed and it was finally moved out...the '68 Newport has been shuffled around the place for the last year..not sure what will end up happening with them

My favorite DeSoto is the '56. Very T-bird-like front end, and I love the styling.

'56s are beautiful cars. I wouldn't turn down that Newport either.

frown

End of an era I guess (closing of gas station). Gas stations that had mechanics and parts and knew their customers.

There is a Sunoco station, that's a couple hours away from me.
It's owned by a guy that immigrated from South Korea. decades ago.
It's a 2 bay service garage attached to the station. I am pretty sure it's still in business, as a
working service shop, along with the gas station part of it.

Most of the service & gas stations around here either ditched the gas and went to strictly repairs or ditched the service bays and became convenience stores.

Talked to one of the last combo owners. He said the EPA caussd him to do 100k in improvements so he signed up with Shell to finance the upgrades. Before he could even pay shell back the EPA made new rules and he needed another 150k in improvements. He sold the place instead.

It is nearly impossible to afford to have just a few pumps and survive. Everything around here has at least 10 pumps to sell enough gas to pay for the constant legislation, service, and maintenance to have gas pumps.

Times they are a changimg.

One of the reasons I love watching Adam-12 and catching glimpses of actual gas/service stations in the early 70's. I see their signs "Shocks Tires Brakes Alignments" and I just think that's so cool. The good ole days.

A mechanic I used years ago rented the 2-bay shop portion of a gas station that no longer used it, probably pretty common these days

We have about 15 of those 10+ pump gas stations here in our town of about 20,000 people. Unless its a pay day, and after the people get off work, those stations are usually without more then one or two customers. Seldom is there a need to wait in a line at any of them. Most gas stations around here are now offering the chance to play gambling games as a method of surviving, in addition to the convenience store, and selling gas, booze, smokes, and vaping products.

Funny thing, seems that about every two weeks all the prices at the stations in town align at the same prices per octane rating, but after a week or so the prices start to vary a couple cents different, up until one of them gets about 8 - 10 cents cheaper then the others, then suddenly everyone is back in line again. Its been going on since about the middle of last year.
