Tires and where to get them.....

Tires and where to get them..... - 03/27/24 09:38 PM

I am going to get a set of tires for the classic this summer. Sooner than later as they are old and need to be replaced. I am going with either Cooper Cobra Radial G/T or BF Goodrich Radial T/A. I can get them either at Discount Tire or Belle Tire. Pricing for the tire itself are the same at each location. BFG is slightly more than Cooper. Hagerty Driver's club offers $100 rebate on a set of 4 BFG.

Here's where I would like opinions:
Belle Tire offers 10% Veteran discount while Discount Tire offers 5% for using their credit card (6 months 0 interest) and 5% for Veteran discount. Which place do you prefer and why?
I have not had a blowout or even hit a nail with the tires on it now. Should I get the warranty certificates (or what ever each place calls them)?
Spare is 16 or so years old, but only on the ground for about 100 miles and never seen sunlight other than that. Should I get a new spare as well? If I get a new tire for the spare, probably pass on that warranty certificate.
Would you go with BFG or Cooper and why?
Cooper has a mileage warranty, where BFG does not, but I don't put on a ton of miles with it anyway.

I appreciate all feedback.

All you'll get is opinions...so here's my 2 cents. I have bought 3 sets of tires in the last couple years. 2 for DDs and 1 for the toy. Coopers for the DDs and BFG T/A for the toy. All from Discount and mounted/balanced by me. Shopped online, found what I wanted, walked in the store had them ordered. They called later that day or next day with them ready to go, Pulled in, paid and they through them in the truck....easy peasy. I've been using Coopers on my DDs for years, never had any issues. twocents

I wish dunlop still made 15's.
I ran BFG's back in the day and run coopers now.
the bfg's were always bad in rain, and from what I hear are not any better today.
you might look into the pricing at sam's club. you can get a 20 dollar membership from govx and they generally run a vet discount for memberships as well with 20 bucks off your first purchase.
they also sell both, and give money back on bfg's too if you are going to go that route.
my current set of cobra's are about due up for replacement too.
like you mileage isn't what is going to get them, so the warranty isn't a big deal.
sam's includes the road hazzard as part of the install. which on some sale days is included for free.

I'd choose a brick and mortar store with a reasonable price and good reputation and just do it. You can buy tires online for a great price but usually it's a wash when you take them anywhere for mounting and balancing. I read here on Moparts the white lettering on the TA Radials turn brown shortly after washing off the blue coating. The brown discoloration evidently does not wash away. Thats a shame because I think TA Radials look the best. Cooper makes RWL tires and some lesser known choices are, Mastercraft, Galaxy and Milestar

Our local farm store often runs sales on tires where if you buy 3 you get one tire is "free". They offer several different brands. When the sale is going on, their prices have beaten all the online discount outlets and its a local brick and mortem building. As one would expect, when they have a tire sale, the place is swamped. You go in, order and pay for your tires and whe3n they come in, you make an appointment to get them mounted and balanced, which may be as much as a couple weeks later.

I don't do raised letter tires, and seldom do whitewalls. My rides are a 48 Plymouth coupe, a 49 Dodge pickup, and an 04 PT Cruiser. The coupe has Hankook tires on it and the truck has Good Year Trailblazers on it. I have no ides what brand is on the PT, and its not here right now. I have been pretty impressed with the Hankook tires. I buy my tires based on thread pattern and traction control since what is on the sidewalls is not important to me. We usually wear the tires out (I don't run them until they are bald) and it seems like I'm buying a set of 4 tires for something about every other year. Before next winter, the PT will get tires. The truck tires were new in 2022. The coupe may be on the last set of tires I'm buying for it.

I've been getting better pricing from Costco than Discount recently. No complaints on BFG's, no experience with Coopers.

M/T Sportsman S/T radials are made by Cooper, and I think they are a better performing white letter tire than the Cobra and the Radial T/A.. They do cost more though.

I never thought of Sam's club. Looking at how much they are later today. I also will look into the other vet discounts that were posted. Keep the opinions rolling in, I have some time still before I get them because the car is still in storage. I am leaning towards BFG because those are the tires I always remember seeing on the cars I liked at car shows growing up. Belle Tire said he has replaced browning letters on BFG with no issues, but they haven't replaced a set in a while so maybe the white letter issue is fixed.

Whatever you do pick an installer that won't damage your wheels. This is 2024 and there is a worker shortage. Those that do show up for work often are not skilled.

For quite a while I have got all my tires from Discount Tire. There is one close and they always give me good service. They even mount slicks for me.

I am kind of a Michelin bigot so that is mostly what I have bought from them.

In the past I have always bought the certificates but recently when I got tires for my 2007 Magnum R/T I passed.

About the only thing I gained was the road hazard insurance and the cost was close to the price of a new tire. I don't drive the car that much so I passed.

you might also check to see if there is a military base near you.
you are allowed to shop at the exchange there for a few years.

I have bought 5 sets of tires from costco, and have had no problems. Whatever you do avoid Belle tire, they are more interested in selling you service that you do not need, than selling tires and providing customer service after the sale.

Just put Cooper Endeavor Plus on the wife’s SUV, great tires so far. I’ve had good luck with Coopers, quiet tires and do great in Snow. I bought them at Big O Tire, great service and a few classic car guys work there, so they seem to take care of stuff. I always get the first appointment of the day so I can get in and out quickly.
