honda V65 questions - 03/17/24 08:20 PM

i just drove 700miles round trip and picked up a 1984 honda V65 Saber with 28,000 miles on it for $1200. came with new plugs installed, new tires and battery.
iit was a deal from a friend of a friend or a relative. bike has been sitting for about 1 1/2 years without ever being driven.
owner was injured in a non motorcycle accident and can't ride anymore.
the bike starts and idles just fine without any valve train clatter. the instant you give it gas it dies. you can choke it and try to rev it up and still dies instantly. sprayed carb cleaner on the carb rubber joints and idle is inchanged.
owner thought the carbs need cleaning. after researching these bikes have fuel line issues. IMO if the carbs were the problem the choke should help the rev prob some.

anyways what is a good forum like moparts for these bikes?

I bought a new V45 when they first came out. Drove over an hour to get it. Threw the valve shims out of it a couple of times due to the hydraulic clutch. It was a 'boulevard cruiser' so it rode harsh. Put about 2,500 miles on it and got rid of it. Was very peppy, but you couldn't wind it hard and expect it to shift and release the clutch when you wanted it to. If I remember correctly, the red line was a whopping 10,000rpm. Just don't try to shift fast up there. And speed shifts are out of the question.

If it's been sitting you're going to have to get into the carbs. The tiny little passages in them won't tolerate any dirt at all. It may have cracked diaphrams too. Don't be surprised if it has transmission issues once you get it running. Those things ate 2nd gear like candy.

At least you're not in it real deep.

i regularly rode a co-workers V65 Magna when it was new in 83. i know how they ride.
the Saber uses the same frame as the interceptor. the motor has rubber mounts and the interceptor motor was solid mounted.
i owned several used interceptors when they were sold new, 2-750's and 1-1100.

i have a friend who has restored a few DT 400's. i have been doing all the paint work for him. i got the riding itch again so i have been somewhat actively looking for one for several months now.. i was looking for something to fix up a bit and sell.

i casually know the seller of the bike. i have talked with him several times when i was visiting my relative.
supposedly i was the first person they called when he decided he couldn't ride anymore. he probably asked his friends first, talked to my relative, my relative mentioned my name so he contacted me. the seller said 2nd gear was just fine. i guess i will find out soon enough.

i always wanted to own one. i was going to buy this exact bike new in 85, instead i got a great deal on a slightly damaged Suzuki 84 GSX1150F so i bought that instead

my plans are to ride it lightly this summer. do a cosmetic resto and complete repaint on it and sell next riding season.

i am looking for a good forum on these bikes. i found a active one a few months ago . after a quick search i couldn't find it again.
i did find V4 muscle bike forum. it covers these bikes along with the V max bikes. it doesn't seem that active. i guess i will keep looking tonight.

If the rubber diaphragms need replacing this is the true affordable and practical solution. Cut off the old diaphragm and install some from this company. Certain carbs will need a touch of glue to prevent them from rotating on the slide/barrel.

Nice bike.
had a 83 V65 sabre, still miss it, Done 70 000Km with it before selling it.
My .02$, you surely already know that...

Smart charger to keep battery full, low voltage battery is tough on old bike electronic.
don't cheap out on tire.
premium fuel only.no cow fuel.
Change oil frequently.
V65 need to see WOT and 8000rpm once in a while.
