Electric Stove - Oven Heat Element Blew: - 06/16/23 06:47 PM

This has never happened in my life before, but last night the bottom heating element in our Frigidaire stove blew - got overheated & hummed, then popped, & sparked & melted in one place. I watched some videos last night on BoobTube - apparently this is not uncommon.

SO, I went out & bought a new one this afternoon & just installed it - VERY simple install. This is the type of element our stove has: https://youtu.be/menDB7rH58I

Anyway, just installed it, turned the breaker back on, turned the oven on to preheat, & nothing - no heat through the new element. I left it on for about 4 minutes, then turned it off & shut the breaker off. I'm thinking something else internal - not just the coil. Any ideas?

To fry the element like that makes me think a controller or something upstream failed.
The appliance websites showing repair and parts info will really help.

A quick search found this one

Good luck

Had the same thing happen to our GE oven about 3 months ago. Thing actually lit on fire! Had to unplug the stove to get it to stop. It was about 20 yrs old so I didn't even attempt to put a new element in it. Wife had been asking for a new one for a while so we were off to the appliance store within the hour. Some how that morphed into a new fridge and microwave as well......$4500 later.........

I know...right! I can't complain.....she works hard, doesn't ask for much and all those appliances were 20+ yrs old. Now we have all new stuff that looks fantastic and I'm sure will never last 20+ yrs.....lol

I recommend installing surge supresser outlets. I feel it helps the electronics live a little longer

Does your stove have fuses anywhere? We've had a few oven elements go over the years and they've always worked right off the bat after replacing them. There might also be a wiring diagram inside the rear cover that might help.

Hasn't helped much, other than showing how to replace the element. I'm thinking the fuse theory might be more likely.

Check the wires inside the stove. I've seen them burn up.

The most common spot for the wires to go is at the connection to the element but yeah the wiring should be easy to check too with the back off.

Well - went & bought a new one. I don't have time to put it on the hoist & rebuild it! I did this with a washer a couple years ago & after buying a $200.00 controller that didn't solve the problem, I said no more! The sales guy today said they go 10-12 years, so I figgered we got a good 15-ish years out of it. It was a good old stove - RIP.

I remember the element in my grandmas stove exploding. That was one pizza that didn’t get eaten!
