Challenger outsells rustang and crapmaro.......again - 01/07/23 03:09 PM

"The Dodge Challenger won the Detroit pony car war again in 2022, managing to outsell the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro for the second consecutive year. Not bad for a basic design that dates back to the 2008 model year.

U.S. sales figures show Dodge sold 55,060 Challengers in 2022, which was up about 1% from the previous year."

I'm sure this coming year will be the same. Then what?

Not sure its a fair fight considering all the shortages. Mustang usually wins

On the plus side...the next generation Mustang kinda looks like a Camaro....which happens to also be one ugly car.

The challenger has been gaining ground since they came out, this is not new because of the shortages. And of course dodge is going to shoot their selves in the foot and ax it in favor of a vacuum cleaner.

But it does make some fake sounds meant to imply ICE

And don't forget the Challengers are on the top of the more stolen list too. If there was a Mustang and a Camaro with the keys in them, the doors unlocked, windows down and the engines running, sitting next to a locked Challenger guess which one would be stolen laugh2 laugh2

At least Fird is doing what Dodge should have continuing to sell the gas one along with electric.
For a while Stelantis was touting the upcoming 6 cylinder so hopefully something is in the works with it.

There should be but the 6 cyl will also be a hard sell, even with 410 and 510hp

At least Ford and GM are still offering a factory ragtop! If Dodge would have done a ragtop there wouldn't be a Mustang GT in my garage!

Did you not read the headline? Challenger outsells the competition. Again. And the competition has convertibles. Does that not tell you something?

Dodge does have a challenger convertible for 2023, but I have no idea how they plan to build them. Apparently they have an agreement with a custom shop in Florida to do them after you order it. I think they will get a lot of orders as there is probably "a bit" of pent up demand after never offering any since 2008.

I use to work in an ASC convertible factory, for the Toyota Solera, not exactly a strong seller like the challenger and the plant still ran 24/7. We were a separate factory down the road from the Toyota plant that built the cars, they first showed up as bodies in white to get the roof cut off and bracing welded in, then they went back to be assembled, then came back to us for convertible top and finishing.

I have no idea how Dodge plans to run 20,000~ challengers through a small shop in Florida, and maybe they figured that out because you still can't order one

Challenger does surprisingly well with younger folk who: 1 Have no interest in golden era muscle cars. 2 Don't even know or car about the 1970 -74 Dodge Challenger. The mimicking of those classic lines does very well and non gear heads buy them because they flat out like the look. The V8 power options are an attraction too. On modern Mopar discussion sites anytime an "Older gent" mentions how great the Hemi is all the younger members automatically think of the modern Hemi and an LS and modern Hemi debate ensues.

Yep, rented one many years ago on a business trip to Thousand Oaks, CA. Well not intentionally, Enterprise was out of the car I initially reserved and gave me a choice of colors on a Challenger. Tough time at first picking a color until I looked around and saw all of the white cars of every variety in the lot and on the road. Nice driving car that I "took the long way home" with the spare time before and after the job I was there to do. Coast Highway, Queen Mary and crawling for two and a half hours that would normally, without too much traffic, take about an hour to get from the Queen Mary to Thousand Oaks. I HATE LA TRAFFIC. So I returned down the coast highway to LAX to return the Challenger, but first with a stop at the Hot Rod Magazine shop for a private tour. Don't know if it's still there off of Wilshire Blvd??

^ Did the same thing but with an ecoboost mustang convertible, other car wasn't available and they had a row of mustangs in different colors, grabbed the black one and "took the long way home". It was actually my last big work trip, I quit after getting home.

Cool. I have family in Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village. Been there several times. Was a ton of fun, but way too crowded for me to live there. And you have to work your schedule around traffic volumes. My relatives rarely go into L.A. because of the traffic getting there. That and the 'other' problems there. With air travel the way it is now, we will probably never go back. frown

Hard to believe that so many sell each year from a body style that is basically the same since 2008. It just goes to show America loves a nice looking 2 door musclecar with V8 power regardless of gas prices and all the EV hoopla.

90,000 - 100,000 is a good number and even the 5th gen camaro hit that. Mustang usually does that automatically every year. Challenger doing 55,000 and beating both in 2022 shows there were parts shortages

This is Chrysler remember. And a sport/performance car. 2022 sales was the 6th best of the car's 15 year run and the 3rd year in a row of increased sales.

https://carfigures.com/us-market-brand/dodge/challenger

And there are those that disagree with your assessment including both media and the manufacturer:

"The Dodge Challenger is very, very old, but it doesn’t matter. For the very first time since the car emerged for the 2008 model year, Dodge has sold more Challengers than Ford and Chevrolet have sold Mustangs and Camaros.

Some will chalk that up to the chip shortage, and it’s quite possible Dodge and its dealer network have responded better to it than its crosstown rivals, as brand CEO Tim Kuniskis recently suggested to Automotive News in an interview. But to Stellantis’ own credit, the Challenger’s ascendance relative to the competition has been a trend for roughly half a decade now. The Mustang and Camaro have only slid in sales since 2015, when Ford’s numbers peaked. Incidentally, 2015 was the year the current-gen Mustang hit the market.

Kuniskis is adamant that being the segment leader is not Dodge’s aim, but rather a welcome prize for weathering the supply chain storm, and a sign his team is in tune with what muscle car customers want: a sense of community, supposedly."

If they had any balls or brains, they wouldn't abandon the gas powered cars.

Thats funny! His company is climbing to status they have never owned with a product they sell but are about to discontinue... we have the best product but we are gonna quit making it because we know what people want??? Reminds me of that bakery or something a few years back that had some best selling muffin or something and quit making it so people would start to buy there other stuff.

This is what Chrysler does and has always done. When I went to business school, back around 2005 or 2006 we had an auto biz class and the professor was a retired industry vet. We got talking about Chrysler and he nailed it. "They're doing ok now, but give it a couple years and they'll be in dire straights again (and like clockwork they went bankrupt again). But he said they historically did their best work when their backs were up against the wall facing liquidation, and like clockwork again they did come out with some pretty good products that saved the day.

Now it seems they are about to create their own hurricane and impending survival plan

When you say "hurricane" did you intend it as a pun?
