Scat Pack Challenger Illustration

Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/25/22 07:39 PM

Well, this one has been kicking my backside... can't begin to count the hours I have in it.

Sorry about the big, ugly watermark, but it's a necessary evil.

Enjoy!

I dunno, that one looks like a photo doesn't it? Mine's not... FWIW, what i posted is a lower-resolution jpeg of my final art, so the full-size original is actually better—far higher resolution. up

No, it took 2 minutes. But if I spent 10 I could find a better background to drag and drop my images onto lol. Thats all these (and his) are.

No, mine are Illustrator renderings. Not photos or Photoshop (other than the background in the 300 illustration). For example, the ‘71 Cuda I posted is a conceptual rendering, done for the shop building the car. There was nothing but the bare shell of the car in primer to work from. I rendered the car in illustrator, in the color of the owner’s choice, added his choice of wheels, tires and brakes, and rendered his custom billboard with the 408 callout and also added the interior he wanted. So no, that’s not “all mine are.” Seriously.

Just for grins, let’s see you do this in Photoshop.

That was the point of my comment.

What you create is art, not a compilation of images cut and pasted together.

Completely different in quality.

I'd say apples and oranges, but that's not even a fair comparison.

Thanks man, I really appreciate you! 👍 There’s always more art to be working on, but if I get a chance today, I’ll pull the wireframe from the Scat Pack rendering that started this conversation. It’s always interesting to look at the art that way, as you can see things (like the tire tread in the 300) that aren’t readily apparent in the full-color art. It’s been a few years since doing the 300, and I don’t recall why I saved the wireframe when the art wasn’t complete. One headlight and the passenger side of the hood weren’t finished in the wireframe. That’s what jumps out at me at a quick glance….

I can see why it seems to appear that way, it's all about the size of the highlights on the bumper directly above the plate. The way the light hits the shape of the bumper, the highlight is bigger on the driver's side than the passenger side. And that makes it appear like the plate isn't straight...

So, here's the promised outline view of the Challenger art.

Re: Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/26/22 11:06 PM

I'm not real sure what I'm looking at with the blue challenger photo. Are you staying you drew that from scratch, by first creating that wire drawing and then going from there? The tree reflection in the paint, you added that from imagination?

Reason I ask is I'd imagine taking a real photo of a car and working it backwards to the wire sketch like you showed for the 300 is very doable in Photoshop or similar programs.

Honest questions because the yellow cuda looks like a custom job, the others look like car photos overlayed on a background.

Re: Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/26/22 11:46 PM

Nope, you’re exactly right, the Scat Pack Challenger and the 300 started with photos provided by the customers and I render them in Illustrator. The “wire frame” images are showing you all the various shapes in Illustrator that make up the rendering. Those shapes are all assigned colors and/or gradations. The ‘71 Cuda rendering is exactly as you say, created from scratch. There’s really no magic or secrets about this, just a various amount of hours invested to get to where I am pleased with the result.

And as you can imagine, these are created differently than my cartoons which are all hand sketched first, and then taken into Illustrator and rendered. We hadn’t discussed those in this thread yet, but here’s an example:

Re: Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/27/22 12:13 AM

And then there’s also art for printing on t-shirts which is created entirely differently than the other art we’ve been discussing. T-shirt art typically uses a limited pallet of ink colors, limited to help control the cost of printing. I’ve done a lot of t-shirt art, including a couple years of doing the t-shirt art for Chryslers at Carlisle. I’m currently in the middle of next year’s Pure Stock Drags t-shirt design, and have also done t-shirt art for folks like Dave Dudek.

Re: Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/27/22 01:18 AM

I’ll end tonight by adding a non-Mopar image, just because these Buick GSX’s were such torque monsters and a worthy competitor for Hemicars, but they were also just so graphically cool. This rendering was done for a Pure Stock Drags t-shirt design. Those shirts always include 4 cars from a variety of marques.

You are clearly very good at what you do and it is wonderful that you love and enjoy doing it. I for one always enjoy seeing your artwork when you post it. I also must admit I chuckled regarding your apology about the watermark thinking of course you have it on there. Why would you ever post your time and work to the internet in a way where anyone could grab it and lay claim to it. My bet is 99%+ of us understand that and just enjoy seeing it.

Thank you! Yeah, that guy is bad fast! It’s been a few years since I did that one for him, but you might contact and see if he still has shirts for sale if you’d like… I’ve not heard how they sold for him. Hopefully he did well with them. 👍

Man, I really appreciate that! It’s funny, when I’m talking to folks in person about my art, I always mention that I was that kid in school doodling cars in the margins of his notebook paper. That’s really where it started for me. It didn’t hurt that my dad was an collector of old cars, so much of our lives was spent going to car shows, car clubs, tours, etc. I grew up with old cars in my life. But one thing I learned from my dad was to only have one or two. My dad had as many as 30 old cars in various states of repair, and it can definitely become overwhelming. He rented a building and people’s garages to store some, and kept one in my grandmother’s garage since she didn’t drive. Man, when he passed, it was a lot of work (and pain) for the family to sell all that stuff off! 😮

The watermark thing? Well, you see I’ve posted a few here without… mostly because I just didn’t have watermarked versions of that particular art. But I have had at least one instance of finding my art online with my signature removed. I dealt with it, but it’s not an enjoyable thing to have to take care of. Rather unpleasant actually.

Re: Scat Pack Challenger Illustration - 10/30/22 05:55 PM

Evidently the blue background on the original art was too much blue for the customer so he requested some changes... he wanted the car put on a dry lakebed. So here's how that worked out.
