20 years ago I worked at a body shop, the insurance adjuster guy showed up and we got into the deer/moose hit topic. He went onto tell us a horror story, guy and and girl in an Iroc camaro, they hit a deer or moose, forget, anyways it ended up on the hood and feet through the busted windshield and its kicking the girl in the face / spasms. Dude has to wake up, un buckle seatbelt, get out and yank the thing off the hood. Chick looked like she went 5 rounds with Tyson.

Many years ago, one of my distance cousins and one of his friends hit a mule in a Triumph TR7 at a high rate of speed. They both survived but were in the hospital for a long time.

We live in southern Illinois, not far from Shawnee National Forest. Two interstate highways run through it. Years ago, our state wanted to re-introduce elk into the forest. Now we have lots and lots of deer in this region. Those deer are usually 200lbs or less and do a lot of damage to vehicles. Elk can weigh 700lbs. The outcry from all corners against that idea was deafening. So, the idea was scrapped.

more than a few instances in these parts, a vehicle hits a deer, it goes through the windshield and beats on the occupants.
even just going through the windshield is hard on the person[s] inside without it beating on them.
a little farther north of here, around 30 miles or so, there are elk to contend with. hit one of those, and it REALLY grabs your attention !

So far I have whacked at least 5 deer, one while riding my FJ1100 at about 85 mph. That one got my undivided attention.

They should've been concentration on spending money fixing the roads in southern IL, not buying Elk. whistling biggrin

my old man liked to hunt white tail deer.
he got way more with his cars than he got hunting, of which the score was cars-8, hunting-1. biggrin
my one sister was with him when he picked up one of his new chryslers. the dealership was only 1 1/2 mile from the house. almost home, sis yelled : "DAD, DEER !" ......WAM !!!!!!
the car had around 4 miles on it. got the grille, passenger front fender, both doors, and the quarter.

I remember hearing a story about someone headed to Alaska on the Alaskan Highway and stopping at some lonely single gas pump gas station and seeing a car parked off to the side with the roof missing. He made a kind of joke about how funny it was to have a convertible in such a cold area of the world. The owner of the gas station then informed him the roof was cleaned off by a moose. The body mass of a moose is right at windshield level and the spindly legs of a moose don't do anything to slow a car or pickup and the body mass stays right there at windshield level with no time for the front seat driver and passenger to do anything but shock shock Big problem in Sweden too and that's where the "moose test" got started. But it's not so much for the crash into or under a moose as it is for crash avoidance like this:

I was driving home one night years ago from Palm Springs, CA to Joshua Tree, CA, there are two grades that I had to climb and there was a car ahead of me about a mile on the last one which is about 6 mile climb straight ahead and I saw its taillights flicker several times (it was a really dark night with no traffic) and I wonder why, I found out about 50 seconds later, it was 5 horses running down the middle of the road shock
I was driving a 1959 Dodge Coronet with the front end jack up like we ran them back then, if I had hit one of those horses I sure I wouldn't had survived puke Thanks be to God bow boogie up
