Canadians ordering from Summit ???

Canadians ordering from Summit ??? - 09/14/22 11:51 PM

Have any Canadians ordered from Summit and had their stuff shipping into Canada ? If so, were there any additional BROKERAGE fees ?

Summit offers free shipping to Canada. They do calculate and charge the GST under "duty and taxes" but there is no mention of brokerage fees. I don't want an additional $35 surprise when FedEx shows up with my package !!

Thanks,

They used advertise no surprises shipping. I'd call and confirm. I'd get a name too...

Good question. I've never ordered from Summit because of that, but last time I looked they didn't have free shipping either.

I asked here because I suspect the folks at Summit don't know anything about the brokerage charges. The brokerage fees are usually tacked on by FedEx (or UPS) and billed directly to the customer at time of delivery - totally invisible to the shipper. This has happened to me before but it wasn't anything from Summit.

I learned the hard way not to use UPS when shipping to Canada. Had an ebay item that needed to go to Canada. Buyer said to send it USPS (by mail). Took several things to Boxes Plus that needed boxing and shipping inside the USA, and they asked if I wanted to have them just ship the Canadian item too. Being a lazy ass, I said do it. Everything was fine until I get a nasty message from buyer in Canada because UPS had tacked on fifty dollars for collecting customs fees that Canadian Mail would not have done. Forced me to refund the 50 or get a bad mark from ebay. Live and learn. Now, everything I ship to Canada goes by mail.

Thanks but I'm not interested in "person to person" shipping issues, Most Canadians are all well aware of the issues of using FedEx or UPS versus USPS whenever possible. What I need is info about Summit shipments specifically. FWIW, Rockauto have some sort of crossborder arrangement and there are no brokerage fees. Wondering if Summit have similar arrangements. I've sent an email to Summit - awaiting their reply.

It'll be interesting to hear what they say.
I've ordered from Eastwood before once when they offered free shipping and it included Canada and no extra fees. But when I went to get something else later the free shipping deal was over and for the high price they wanted for shipping I was guessing it included all the extras up front but couldn't get an answer.

I have got things from Summit from time to time. Right now I believe they have free shipping either over $299 or $399.
Anyway when you click on shipping options it lists who the shipper is.
I have never had any extra fees tacked on afterward.

Dilemma solved !!

I did hear back from Summit - saying that there would be no additional charges upon delivery of my order (roughly $400 Can. in value). Canadian sale taxes were charged at the source. Free shipping.

I ordered the item on Monday, did not pay for any upgraded shipping. The item arrived today. No additional charges.

So here was my thinking process ...
If I'd ordered it shipped to U.S. Address I would have paid N.Y. sales tax. U.S. Address would have charged $5 to receive the package. Then when I brought it home I "might" have been charged Canadian sales tax at the border. Add the time and expense to drive down and pick it up. Pretty much a no-brainer!

However, I do have a bunch of stuff coming from Stephens, YearOne and RockAuto - none of which provide free shipping so these justify U.S. delivery and the drive to pick up - on the way to Fall Carlisle.

Not to mention at the border they're also charging you tax on top of tax and shipping (if there was a shipping charge). I use a U.S. address too and have a bunch of stuff waiting to pick up.

Thanks for the update, good to know on Summit.

For Rock Auto try the shipping quote to Canada. I did an order about a month ago and shipping to Canada was only $5 more then what it was in the U,.S. A no brainer to go that way. But I tried it on another order and it was a lot more so I guess it depends on the warehouse it's coming from.

Dilemma a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones.

It was a pretty straightforward question with an even more straightforward answer...where was your dilemma? And are you seeing anyone for it?
