It's free for Hagerty members to list cars for sale.
I wonder if it will become a popular place to buy and sell cars. I also wonder if they will eventually start charging something for the service?
I listed my late model Challenger there last week. So far buyers aren't lining up at my door.

Will they issue a 1099?

Hagerty is being hyper aggressive in the background on all things car related. Significant investments in all types of things.

I posted this wondering if it’s going to become a major site for advertising vintage cars, or just a minor player in the car market place.
Companies do things in hope of making a profit, Hagerty members can advertise there for no additional costs. Will that continue?
Time will tell.
The site so far seems ok, but over time maybe it will be organized better.
Still no bites on my Challenger.

Here it seems like CL is like 2/3 dealers and 1/3 private sellers. I see plenty of newish Challengers for sale, but mostly by new/used car dealers. I wonder at a certain price point people just buy from a dealer as somehow it's easier if they have a trade-in to get rid of, easier or faster to finance at a dealership vs a private party?

I haven’t had any luck selling cars for over 10 years. Several inexpensive daily drivers I tried to sell on Craigslist before giving up and trading in toward my new car, a show winning no excuses 4 speed ‘71 V code Challenger that I advertised in multiple sites for 5 years before deciding screw it, if no one wants it but me I’ll keep it, even if I have to keep it stored an hour away, and now trying to sell my ‘09.
I just wonder what has changed since the 80s and 90s when I had little trouble selling cars, used to list my cars in the good old Tradin Times and a week or two or maybe at worse a month or two later off it would go with its new owner.
People just want to buy from dealers and auctions now is the impression I get.
In the meantime my 09 keeps my 71 company in storage, but I can’t keep it forever like the 71, so I’m really at a quandary needing to sell a car when it seems to be impossible to sell cars now. A year ago I should have traded it in on my new Ram…but too late now!

As a licensed re-builder, I sell used cars for a living. I do not have a formal lot, do not offer financing, and do not trade. It is cash and carry. Always has been, so I have circumstances similar to you. When we set the price on a vehicle, we hold that price for a while. Usually less than 100 days. If during that time the vehicle doesn't generate much interest, we modify the ad and try all the available sales listings. If there is some interest in the vehicle, but it doesn't sell, the lost prospects are the best source of information as to why the vehicle is not going away.

After holding the line for awhile, changing the ad wording a couple of times, and listing in as many places as possible, if the vehicle has not generated much interest, there in nothing left to do but adjust the price. We drop the price and do the process again. Once in a while it takes a few of those cycles to hit the right combination of description, placement, and price to get in front of the right person. But it works.....every time. And has for 30+ years.

If a vehicle isn't selling, the key is to uncover the real reason. And it could be any number of things. Including personality. So it is important to be pragmatic about the vehicle and it's intended audience. To get the most money out of a vehicle often takes more effort than just selling cheap and easy. But in my experience, it really is true that there is a butt for every seat. It just takes the right combination.

In short: keep lowering the price until it sells.

back in my junkyard ownership and auction days, our mindset was : "twenty $100 cars sold in 30 days is $2000.00. one $2000.00 car sold in 90 days is $2000.00. selling 60, $100.00 cars in 90 days is $6000.00. let's sell the lower priced units and more of them."
that worked well for us during that time.
and that time frame was really the time of $100.00 cars, so it was just "slightly" in the past.

Cool. Thanks for sharing. I was looking at that club cab in Cali. Hopefully someone saves it. Priced a bit high probably at 5k. Hopefully rats haven't gotten to it. Nicely optioned, but would be a lot better if it were 440 (obviously)

just curious cause I noticed the older porches are really cheap. under 10k for the most part.
not super old, but 80's 90's I guess. 30 -40 years.
I know they won't be "cheap" to keep up with, but I thought people made good money trading those around.

I don't know how anyone could say it's impossible to sell a car right now. Prices have been incredibly strong. The only reason something wouldn't be selling is an unrealistic expectation for what it should bring. I own an auction business, selling investment grade pre 1970 advertising. Our platform is no reserve. Yes, that's always a risk as 15% of our inventory will be purchased below market value, as is the case in almost any no reserve auction. However, we always have breakthrough pieces that are bringing world records. Post auction, guys who never want to take a risk, want to get that auction price if they have a similar piece. The private seller who wants max auction prices will drive you nuts. The guys that take the risks are the ones that get rewarded, sometimes, they lose.

I've sold multiple cars on eBay and bring a trailer. I list them no reserve so people know they're buying the car. One came in about 10% below what I thought it should, the others over performed. Most sellers don't want to put the marketing effort into selling their piece. They want to take a few pictures, be grumpy as [censored] and scream "I know what I have", then get frustrated when they don't get max value.
