Digital Calipers

Digital Calipers - 04/29/22 07:34 PM

I'm looking for a 6" digital caliper with no memory function. Some have a parasitic memory that drains the battery when sitting, others don't.

Any suggestions?

I have one from Mac and discovered it kills the battery sitting around, as does my harbor freight one, avoid them or remove the battery, at least the battery is easy to remove from the harbor freight one the Mac needs a screw driver.

I have had a harbor freight one for over 15 years. If I don't take the battery out, it will be dead within a year.. I don't use it all too often so the battery now lasts many years this way.

I have a very nice Starett mechanical caliper, battery never dies. I have two digital calipers, both have dead batteries. Guess which one I use and which two I haven't in decades?

I have a set of Mitutoyo digital calipers that I bought years ago and have never replaced the batteries.

I like to have a digital sliding caliper handy for measuring brake rotors, quick easy maybe not as accurate but close enough. Things that are more important to be exact I always use my fowlers mechanical calipers.

I have probably six or seven digital calipers from Starrett's to Mitutoyo to Beta to etc., high end to low end to five or more non-digital and my favorite of the all is one that you can buy at Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace HW, True Value etc., for around $39 bucks a General Tools & Instruments 6-in Digital model 1467. If you look at the image of one of the three modes you may see why, IT ALSO DOES FRACTIONS !

Mitutoyo digital here too. Long battery life, calibrate them on occasion and always accurate.

I bought this one 8 years ago when my 30 some year old Brown & Sharpe died. Original 8 year old battery is still working. I don't use it nearly as much since I retired. It is made in China but a testing lab found it to be as accurate and reliable as a mitutoyo that cost at least three times as much.

I also have a Mitutoyo that doesn't kill batteries. A machinest friend of mine has since taken the battery out of it when he saw it, saying that he had a good digital caliper that a battery corroded in it and wrecked it when it wasn't used for a while. I've never had that happen but better safe then sorry I guess.

Here here on the General. I use it all the time for over ten years with NO battery issues. Todd

Same here, I have a 6" and a 8", neither have a memory function though.

as a 45yr career machinist, and still practicing today, i'm not a fan of the digital calipers.
my collection consists of mechanical starretts, mititoyos, brown & sharps, and a couple of off shore versions that are used in dirty environments for quicky measurements.
just my preference. your mileage will vary.

I forgot about the Brown & Sharpe calipers I also have............oops one of the first digitals they made......haven't used them for years hmmmmmmm wonder if the battery is still good?? work update batteries dead......found an invoice in the box for repair of something back in 4/6/89 and pretty sure I bought it several years earlier ('84?) and it was pretty expensive like several hundred at the time. shock All in all I still like the General Tool and Instruments caliper for only forty bucks or so mainly for the fraction mode especially when quickly trying to convert thousandth or metric to fractional drill sizes in the heat of the moment.

Liking the General Tools & Instruments model 1467 especially the price. Ordered one from E-bay, might get more.

Thanks for the suggestions.

iagree up
Screw digital calipers, more electronic small parts to go wrong work twocents
I use mechanical calipers for rough measuring, mechanical micrometers for accurate measuring up twocents

"Technophobia is the dislike of advanced technology or complex devices."

Some hate 'em, some embrace 'em...for me, it's just easier to read digits than dials or verniers.

i recently bought a dial pair of AMZ. and have been totally impressed with them. they have been dropped a few times byt the 'no more employees" with zero issues. held up better so far than the Mitutoyo's eek

Well as some put it "opinions vary". During my stint as a guest of the US Navy, one of my jobs was calibration. We Calibrated EVERYTHING on a submarine including all matter of pressure gages, torque wrenches , and calipers. Seeing first hand how much things were off sometimes, was to be honest shocking. Very good, high quality tools that would be out of spec. Trust what you can verify and results you can see for yourself. I am a firm believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hell my buddy Mike, who is a life long machinist, can feel a thou with his fingers. Yes, I have seen him do it and yes I have seen him take peoples money when they bet he could not. Todd
