Well picked up another project, 1980 Gran Fury squad - 04/05/22 03:46 AM

Good evening everyone
Well I picked up another project car, a 1980 Gran Fury ex Minnesota State Patrol squad. This car was in service from 1980 to 1983. It was sold at auction in 83 and parked in 1989. He owned it all that time until I got it. He recently passed away and I was able to buy it from the estate. They were happy I bought the car and gave me a great deal.
It's a 360 4bbl car (last year and last older Mopar squad to get dual exhaust) and is pretty unmolested. The engine still turns by hand. The underside is pretty clean for a non undercoated car in the salt belt. It has rust but is not bad. Unfortunately the car suffered from very very poor storage. The passenger front window was broke and it made it a highway in and out. The interior reeks but I am hopeful with a full interior disassembly, cleaning every piece, removing nests, cleaning, and hitting with an ozone machine, hopefully I can get rid of the smell.

Now I am collecting/looking for parts to get it going and stuff that is cool (Am/FM CB radio, etc).

Good luck with your new project and keep us posted on your progress.

I had an '81 Gran Fury undercover car that I bought from the New York State Police, same color as this one. It was a good driving car and very comfortable, but I thought it was a little gutless compared to 440 squad cars I had.

Cool! Keep updating this post it's neat to see.

I'd love to to get an older mopar police car sometime to go along with my awd Hemi Charger one.

Nice! We had an ex-CHP 74 or 75 Monaco...loved it! The put a 2bbl on it before the auction maybe to help with smog. First thing to swap out!

Those ozone generators do miracles...but you will likely need a few cycles (ozone, then outside air) to get it fully fresh. Good luck!!!

VERY cool! I've always wanted an R-body squad

I had just a 'regular' Gran Fury of the same year and I also owned a '77 Fury (B-body) during that time. To me, the R-body felt lighter and more 'balanced' than the '77, but the '77 felt like it had slightly more power (both 318's).

Be sure to post your progress over in the projects section!

Here's a random pic I pulled from a FB group I follow. The pic was just a 'back in the day' posting regarding the town. It's not a group regarding cars. Kinda hard to miss a former New York State Police R-body. If I remember correctly, this pic was from the early '80's, so the car may be fresh from auction.

GREAT purchase!!!!! Ma Mopar really did things right building Mopar squads up until the Inturdpid.

People are probably tired of seeing me rave about the E58 but here I go again; AWESOME engine!!!! You may find you need to do cam/lifters and valve job but I'm wiling to bet the cylinder walls, rings and bottom end are great. Durability was incredible in these!!!! Great power for smog era cars!!!! Great sound, great feel, extra welds everywhere, just have to deal with the plastic bumper fills, rust and that kind of stuff, but bullet proof drivetrain and mean Mopar squad looks!!!!! If you can free up the exhaust (dump cats) and get it running nicely with tune up, the first time you lay into the peddle the smile will be from ear to ear.

Congrats!!!!!

Yeah it was buried really badly under old police equipment and garbage. All this stuff was removed before I got it. It's unfortunate, it was only was on the road for 9 years and parked. Oh well, I will get to it soon and might even document it on YouTube (haven't decided yet).

Post your pictures in the restoration section. I think posts in the General section disappear after a certain length of time.

Did you get the equipment with it? That's a score itself.
