Do you call it a REAR WINDOW or REAR WINDHIELD?!?!

Do you call it a REAR WINDOW or REAR WINDHIELD?!?! - 10/18/21 08:52 PM

I had a customer tell me I had sent him the wrong trim clips. He said he wanted them for the REAR windshield not the FRONT windshield. He placed the order himself and ordered FRONT WINDSHIELD clips but said he just saw the "windshield" part and ordered them so it MUST be my fault for not sending him the rear ones that he actually wanted. You can't make this ship up! I was under the impression the back glass is called the REAR WINDOW (and thats what the heck I'll continue to call it).

So I had to Google this dilemma and this is what I ran across. Kinda funny.

I suppose I could call the rear window a windshield if I had a tailwind greater than my momentum? Other than that, it's rear window.

Come on "OLD GUYS" get with the times. grin

No different then going through say a 1975 mopar parts book and the terms they used for items we never hear today... some odd words in them books.

Ever hear of a cowl MUCKET filler.... that lil rubber part at the bottom corner of a new mopar windshield to cowl. me neither till I needed one.

Its still a rear window to me.

I have heard that numerous times but it doesn't sound right to me.
Ma Mopar did have some unconventional sounding terms.
Propeller shaft = Drive shaft.
Rear motor mount = Transmission mount.

It's not Mopar specific, it's the proper term as is propeller shaft and transmission mount.
What is a backlite?

What annoys me even more so is that now ANYTHING and EVERYTHING with 4 wheels is simply called 'a car'. Truck, van, bus, RV, etc, etc are all cars now.

It never really bugged me until someone sent me searching for a car, when it actually was a truck.

What annoys me more then that is how everything that used to be called a wagon or a crossover or even a hatchback is suddenly now called an SUV. Might as well start calling minivans that too since they're closer to an suv then some of the other vehicles labelled that.

So does that mean my '69 GTX has side windshields? Now when I'm inquiring about tinted door and quarter glass do I have to state "I'm looking for tinted front door windshields and driver's and passenger's rear side windshields"? shruggy wink What kind of reaction do you think you would get at the local Autozone if you asked for a replacement rear "windshield" wiper blade for your wife's minivan.......might as well pick up some blinker fluid and some 710 while you're at it laugh2

Actually to really confuse the issue.......the SAE calls it "glazing" wink

FMVSS 205:

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205 – Glazing Materials
Glazing standards are regulated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205.

From 49 CFR Ch. V (10-1-04 Edition).

§ 571.205 Standard No. 205, Glazing materials
S1. Scope. This standard specifies requirements for glazing materials for
use in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment.

S2. Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to reduce injuries resulting
from impact to glazing surfaces, to ensure a necessary degree of transparency in motor vehicle windows for driver visibility, and to minimize the possibility of occupants being thrown through the vehicle windows in collisions.

S3. Application and Incorporation by Reference.

S3.1 Application. This standard applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, slide-in campers, pickup covers designed to carry persons while in motion, and low speed vehicles, and to glazing materials for use in those vehicles. For motor vehicles and glazing equipment manufactured before September 1, 2006, the manufacturer may, at its option, comply with 49 CFR 571.205 revised as of October 1, 2003 instead of this version.

Nope, neither. Backlite. If you went to parts, and asked to schedule a back glass replacement, you would be corrected. At least that’s the way it was in 1977.

Re: Do you call it a REAR WINDOW or REAR WINDHIELD?!?! - 10/19/21 11:54 PM

A guy walks into an auto parts store and says "I need the clips for my back glass, rear windshield, rear window, back light."

Counter guy looking confused "So what do you want the clips for? Those parts all have different part numbers..."

Customer "Do you have any in stock I can look at?"

Counter guy "No, I only show I have clips available for the rear windscreen."

Customer "OH! OK. I'll take those."

Counter guy "Can't sell them to you, they probably won't fit."

Customer "I'll take the chance."

Counter guy "I'll have to get my manager's approval!" as he walks away commenting to the other counter guy on the stupid customer that doesn't have a clue what he wants. shock

ordering parts is so complicated these days.

You mean like when someone calls it a rear window instead of using the correct nomenclature? laugh2
Many parts of a vehicle have been called by differing names. Some have been used by different manufacturers contributing to the confusion of what is proper. In short, while even the industry standards aren't always adhered to by all manufacturers, some incorrect terms become common place.

Re: Do you call it a REAR WINDOW or REAR WINDHIELD?!?! - 10/20/21 08:32 AM

Well, on a Dodge or Ram truck with one that can be opened it's called a sliding rear window, whether it's manual or powered.
When it was on the window sticker (Monroney Label) they call it a sliding rear window.

They don't call it a sliding rear Backlite. laugh2

There is only one windshield in most cars made today, it is in the front facing forward.

Everyone that I know outside of the auto industry calls it the back or rear window or glass. At the assembly plant that I worked in it was always referred to as the back light. Never window or glass and definitely not rear windshield.

If you are going backwards fast enough to need a rear windshield then you are probably doing something wrong.

Re: Do you call it a REAR WINDOW or REAR WINDHIELD?!?! - 11/19/21 04:46 PM

It's a rear window. Windshield is called that because it shields you from wind while driving. A window is for viewing, which you do to see through.

Well, in the glass industry, someone who installs or services glass in buildings is a glazer. In the auto glass industry (I used to work in both), you have the windshield, door glass, quarter glass, & backlite. And that's just the way it is my brothers & sisters! When I worked for my first auto glass distributor in Detroit back in 1978, I was always eyeballing a clear Superbird backlite we had in inventory - it was a genuine Mopar one. One day I asked how much $$ if I bought it. As I remember, it was around $80.00. I think I was bringing home around $120.00 a week, so that was steep $$ for me! I simply could not afford it.

t's like the correct term, beltline weatherstrips, are called....

Window sweeps
Window wipes
Cat whiskers
Fuzzies
And a gal called me a few months back and called the "Dew wipes". I know what she meant smile
Another guy called me a couple days ago and called them "window anti rattle something", after much discussion he wanted beltline weatherstrips.
