What a great band Van Halen was with him as their front man. I have to say, they really were good with Sammy too but DLR really rocked that band like nobody else.

Both versions were my favorite two bands. RIP EVH. Been almost exactly a year now.
I saw a bio on the early VH days recently. Roth initially got into the band, because he had some expensive sound equipment that his father had bought him. Both brothers really never cared for Dave's brash, outlandish style, especially when they got "famous" and rich. I remember seeing concert footage of them at a concert in the late 70's or early 80's??? Roth was drunk onstage, and admiting to the crowd he could not remember lines to the song he was supposed to be singing. "C'mon Dave....give me a break! Hey Hey Hey...one break, coming up!"
The singer often is the lightning rod of the band. The names of the drummer, bassist or the dude playing the flute are not as well known. The breakup of Van Halen was purported to be because Eddie and Alex felt that they were the only ones to have a say in the direction of the band. DLR felt different. His solo career was okay but to me, not as spectacular as it was with VH. I liked the Sammy Hagar version of the band about the same as the original. I was just out of high school when Sammy joined the band. That is a memorable point in a young man's life so I fondly recall the mid 80s Van Halen. Cruising, looking for girls, finding them and doing things that parents often frown upon, all the while the radio playing those great songs....
so is he going to take a glazed donut and a bottle of anything TO GOO! I liked both him in VH as well as his sole stuff in the 80's Seen him in a video live footage. Man he sounded really bad. could not understand him at all.
We liked him he was the best front man,and VH was the best!I picked up LIFE magazine and Dave's on the cover with VH and there's a nice salute to Eddie Van Halen! It was 15.00 bucks and worth it!
My neighborhood buddies and I were huge fans, having entered HS in 1979, we got what I think was the absolute best period of VH.... We saw them in concert for Women & Children First, Fair Warning, then Diver Down.. all three were spectacular shows with DLR in his prime with the acrobatic jumps, just great showmanship all over the stage.. They all looked happy and were definitely having a blast on stage. HS was def prime concert-going years, some great times.. we saw a lot from Aerosmith, Styx, Ramones, Rush, J.Geils, The Cars, Boston, to Molly Hatchet, ZZTop, Black Sabbath (another great show), BOC, Ozzie, what a trip back in time. I'll never think badly of DLR.. he always gave a great show. - Art
He was recently in a interview and said his tossing in his shoes and retiring.I hear ya.Good luck Dave!
I'm thinking he should've retired a few years back since his voice has been shot for awhile. He was one of the greatest front men in rock and roll history for a few years but I think it took a toll.
Of course it could just be genetics. Tom Jones is a coach on the UK Voice and once in awhile he'll launch into a song. Tom's voice actually sounds better now at 80 than it did when he was topping the charts 50 years ago. If you ever watch the show you'll be amazed when Tom stands up in is chair and starts singing. He has a stunning voice, especially when you consider that he is 80 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYC5qwekT-g
I saw VH with Sammy in Nashville probably in the late 80’s, it was a great concert. The concert was filmed by MTV to air at some point on TV. Part way through the concert I saw what looked like a sheet fly up on stage. Sammy made his way over to where it was and took his foot and moved it around. During one of Eddies solos Sammy went over and put the sheet on like a cape. When the song was over Sammy was front and center on the stage and turned around with his back to the crowd and cameras and fanned out the sheet. In big letters it said " Who the F*&k was David anyway". My guess that part was edited out before the concert aired.
I never cared for DLR, fantastic singer and stage presence but always came across as a [censored].

Did you ever listen to Clutch ? Neil Fallon has a voice almost as powerful as Tom Jones
Saw VH the week after Independence Day 1981, I had just met my future wife and she said they were heading down to Market Square Arena in Indy to see VH! The show was sold out but I said take me along, I will find a ticket! As soon as we parked I saw a group heading towards us, asked it they had a ticket and they said no. As they walked by I overheard them talking about a friend who never seemed to show up, so I turned around and yelled out SO YOU HAVE A TICKET!?! I got it for face value and DLR and the boys rocked the house! I think DLR should have retired 30 years ago, Gene Simmons was right...
His name in the spotlight, that is what he is always after, so if he says something contraversial people will talk about him good or bad, keeps him in the current...
I saw David Lee Roth play a live New Year's Eve show with Van Halen just before the 2020 covid crisis, and he looked and sounded like a drunken karaoke singer. He wasn't just bad he was terrible! I wasn't surprised one bit when Gene Simmons called him out for how bad he sounds these days. The band was good but Dave sucked. A lot of what made Dave sound good back in the day was Michael Anthony's backup vocals. He was the backbone of the band vocally and carried Roth back then. Hearing Dave sing without Michael doing the background vocals was bad.

And Michael is a car guy! He owns Bonspeed Wheels and made our custom wheels for the Mr. Norms modern Challengers. I went to a Bonspeed party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas and it was epic. Steve Strope was playing bass (I didn't know he was a studio musician and that made him the money to start his resto mod shop) then Michael came in and they started jamming basses, I will never forget that! Saw Michael at SEMA the next year with his family as he was walking in, and he saw me and introduced them to me and asked me how I was doing! What a great guy!
This is very true. Yet DLR and VH were spectacular, while BOA kinda show how gawdawful the 1970s could be.
But that was the 70's, drugs improved perception, I am told, so did Ruby Starr.
Last time I worked with BOA, was late 70's in daytime, in Panama City at a Drive in theater, security outnumbered audience, but Jim Dandy still had a kick left.
