Any scale model builders out there?

Any scale model builders out there? - 08/04/21 05:20 PM

Since Covid hit and I am working from home I have started building 1:25/1:24 scale models again. The amount of scale model detail supplies is astounding! I admit I am keeping the economy rolling with my purchases grin Does anyone have any projects in process or finished they could share? Right now my fat fingers are trying to wire and plumb the injector stacks on a Falcon with the OHC 427. Pre-wired vertex magneto and fuel distribution kit from Ted's Modeling is awesome. Kit has the race car with trailer pulled by a Galaxie. Want to test on that then do the injector stacks on a 426 Hemi Melrose Missile model. I also bought a model direct from the Ukraine. No problems at all. It's a WW11 German staff car. Of course I will put a hi-helix blower on the motor with a fabricated manifold. Please show me what you are working on up

I think there are a few here. Over Winter a really talented buddy of mine built a 1/25 of my Duster "back when it was famous" laugh2
That inspired me to finish a Road Runner I'd put away half-done 40 years ago, and then a model of my old Q5 RR.
Then a car hauler for some of my old promos, which of course necessitated an L700 for the trailer...

Hauler & L700 in process.
The stuff in the background is my buddy's work; he even does the firing order on the plug wires.
In between, tweaked a 1/18 RR to represent one of my real ones - gotta say, that's an easier scale...

Wow! Gives me more inspiration. Thank you! I have 2 of the L700 kits with the trailer. It is funny how I used to build models and the pieces seemed ok. Now they seem so tiny. Trying to drill an 8 port distribution block to the injectors on a 1:25 scale model I feel I am qualified to do intricate heart surgery. boogie

Yup - been building models for 50 years

mostly military - but cars too (attached is not a mopar - but I am currently building a Richard Petty 1964 Belvedere!)

That is awesome!! Do you paint with a spray gun? I have multiples of Richard Petty cars and Dick Landy cars as they are my favorite drivers. I drove my Dart down to a show near IOWA at Fred Engelharts place to meet Dick and see the cars in person. Still cherish the photo I got with him and the signature that is in with a 1:18 scale replica car of his. Meeting and talking with King Richard is on my bucket list.
P.s. Topside your car is a time capsule that me and other A-body fans love. Small car, screaming small block that gives absolute fits to others. I do hope you get the 1:1 car back out for others to enjoy beer

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/04/21 07:23 PM

Thanks!

I paint with a airbrush, used paint from MCW - https://mcwfinishes.com/

I painted the vette with paint from Splash paints - https://www.splash-paints.com/

Nothing wrong with spray cans though - used them for years with very good results

I went to the Darlington NASCAR race a few years ago and they had a great model display in the museum that motivated me to build the King's 64 Daytona winner

I built a few back in the early 80's when I was in my early 20's - have not resumed since but plan to. I have a whole bunch of musclecars & WW2 & later military planes waiting.

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/05/21 01:22 AM

Y'all are building some nice stuff - and yeah, 1/25 is so dang tiny to detail laugh2 !

There's a Mopar-oriented site - https://moparsinscale.proboards.com/ - with some amazing builds, like a '68 Coronet R/T with unbelievable scratch-built details.
Also some big trucks - Petty's hauler, the AAR complete pit setup, etc - and some non-Mopar builds.

It's been challenging to get back into since my eye surgeries, and figuring some upgrade details out as I build, but a helluva lot cheaper than full scale !

Also, what do we all do now since Fred Cady Decals are no longer available? Did someone else step-up on these?

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/05/21 01:38 PM

Decals? Keith Marks in Canada - easy to find on Google, etc.

Really nice stuff, including emissions labels & stuff like that.
Some, like the V8W RR stripes, are pretty fragile, and all need to be trimmed to size, but the detail is pretty amazing.

I was active for awhile, but have not done anything recently unfortunately.

There is a Probroboards forum called Mopar In Scale that is pretty active.

Thanks for the link. I just joined that group, been getting back into the models a bit, especially in winter.

Just visited his site - saw VERY few decal sheets - nothing for E-bodies. Did I miss those?

Try this:

https://public.fotki.com/mofobow/

Plenty of E-body stuff to choose from, should be a menu on the left side of the page.
There's also another way to search using the center folders
He uses his email for ordering & communication, and he's been very reliable.
Stuff takes a couple weeks to show up.

I wish I had the kits I built as a kid in the '70's. Some of my favorite models to build were the Dodge Van models MPC put out back then.

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/06/21 11:11 AM

Just yesterday I got a 1/25 '64 Belvedere to build as a slot car of Jimmy Pardue's #54. This is the first kit I've bought since about 1973 when they were maybe $3. Up til then, I had built a bunch of models but didn't do any detailing beyond the parts that came in the kit. Crude, but I had fun. I took them for granted at the time, but now I think about what must have gone into the making of those kits. Before CAD/CAM and CNC, how did they model those parts and make the molds? The parts, mostly, were visually accurate, to scale, and fit well. How was it done, especially for just a few dollars?

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/06/21 03:07 PM

Thank you everyone for your responses! I absolutely appreciate them. up I built many models as a kid and just built with the parts in the kit except a few times I tried to do my own engine wiring because of seeing articles in Scale Modeler magazine. I have bought many models over the years thinking yes some day. The day came when Covid hit. Bought all new paints, brushes, super glue, paint pens, 2 full kits of model building supplies. Please note the Knives in the kits are exacto copies and they suck. The blades do not tighten up. Buy a good set and you will be far ahead and your thumbs will not be cut and bloody. I got obsessed and now I have probably 60 new kits along with the 30 I have in storage. Plus the intricate detailing resin products and detail master(blower hardware, seat belts etc)from Ted's Modeling and the various AMT packs of pad printed tires(slicks, whitewalls, pie crusts) etc. and a kit with all chromed 392 Hemi and Corvair engine that are for some reason packaged together. Plus on ebay you can get engines packaged/sold by themselves. I have 6. I believe it stems from the fact that ever since I saw Hemi engines they are mystical for me. I am building a 65 Continental wagon model with a dual plug 426 and a screw blower. Roof rack equipped grin P.s for you slant 6 fans there is a 64 Belvedere with a slant 6 engine available.

Although I have not built anything in close to 4 years now I guess

But I have 3 cases mounted of builds. Mostly drag cars with a few stock / annuals mixed in

I do have another couple hundred unbuilts and original annuals builders to last me the rest of my days ,,,especially at my current build rate

That silver Landy's Dodge AWB machine is awesome!! I prefer Mopars but I love all makes of cars. Each there own tale. I don't think you've lived until your teeth are almost rattled out of your head by the wheel hop on a 4 speed 455 equipped w-30. The sheer magic of an overdriven 6-71 on a small block chevy front engined digger. The ride home from work on Sunday morning in an open headered 340 4 speed Duster. I can no longer afford all the real things but I sure can recreate and embellish in small scale all the cars I always wanted. wave

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/07/21 01:46 AM

I haven't built a model in probably 10 years or more. I used to love building them, nothing fancy or detailed, but they were good enough to amuse me.
I have a few unbuilt kits, but these days, my hands don't work so well with the small parts. I guess too many years of abuse from the real thing has caught up with me. From time to time, I drag them back out and spend a week or so proving to myself I can no longer do them.

Occasionally a local model club has a show. Years ago I hauled in a lot of the odd box parts and some of the old models I had and sold them off. When I hear about their show early enough I try to attend, the detail those guys are building to now is amazing. I still love the models, I just can't build them anymore. Gene

I don't but I would love to build them. You all have some nice stuff and Sunroofcuda yours are very legit and really got my attention! up

Re: Any scale model builders out there? - 08/07/21 08:19 PM

Some very nice builds. up
I think my first build was at age 10 of a Hemi under Glass. Been building ever since.

All my kits are still packed up after moving last December. I'm in the middle of oh, half a dozen or so with about 25-30 more waiting. shocked
One of my kits is a resin '65 Valiant I'm building a replica of my first car with. Another is a '69 Corvair I put on a Chevelle frame. Tribute car of one a good friend had. Finished other than paint. Maybe I'll dig them out this fall. wink

Once again thank you all for sharing. I appreciate it greatly up gtx6970 I have never seen or knew they made that translucent Big John Mazmanian model. Incredible

Sunroofcuda that Roadrunner reminds me of the car I had the opportunity to buy back in the late 80's. Same color. The 1:1 had a 383, 4 speed with that awesome coyote duster aircleaner. My dad wouldn't front me the $800 asking price as he said I would kill myself in it. Alas I got a 74 Vega. shruggy

Very cool. I haven't built a model in years. I suck at painting also. Last "models" I built were ERTL 1:18 1971 Barracuda and 1970 Challengers that I Dremel'ed the top of off and painted FE5 and EW1 to match mine at the time.

Wow, you guys do outstanding work...

..yeah, I spend time building WW2 aircraft kits in the winter time, unless I am too busy with cars...

Usually I lean towards 1/72 scale.. but I upgraded to 1/32 and invested in an airbrush - best thing I ever did...
My first airbrush work was with this German Junkers Ju-88 dive bomber for an exhibit at our local aviation museum..

Fun stuff..

Yikes - warbird detailing makes model car detailing look quick & easy.
Some really nice work from you guys, thanks for posting.
One of these days I want to finish a 1/32 Stuka I started decades ago, and hang it from the ceiling in a dive...
Gotta build a big spray booth for it first.
