59 Dodge Custom Royal - 08/01/21 01:34 PM

I’ve been looking for one of these cars for 5 years, and finally found one 80 miles away, on Facebook marketplace. It is a one owner estate sale car. Engine is a 361 and one of the cool features is the swivel front seats.
Paint is all original, but below the belt line has been repainted. Car surprisingly doesn’t look like it had any rust repair other than a few small areas on the floor.
Came with a trunk full of extra parts including extra chrome. Also came with new seat fabric for the back seats as the front seats were redone.

Plans are to install a dual master cylinder, pull and detail the engine, and put on radial tires. Basically I want get it to be a nice driver. My plans were to put on some nice 15” aftermarket wheels and fatter meats, but the hubcaps are growing on me and I found that they sell aftermarket hubcaps in the same style for a 15” wheel.

I’ve always wanted, what I like to call a Jetson style car, bubble top with fins, and finally was able to find one.
Bringing it home was an adventure, every stop ended up taking longer because of people wanting to know what the car was.

If you check the year 1959 Black & White TV Lawrence Welk shows on youtube
my fuzzy memory is that there at least one or more 60 second commercials for that car, including highlighting the swivel seats

Always liked the styling on those. Enjoy !
You'll want to look through a FSM brake section - the brakes of that era are different from the later drums.

Hoping to use a kit to convert to front discs.

Scarebird makes a nice disc brake kit:

https://scarebird.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=64&product_id=54

The '65-'67 C-body rear end is a drop-in so you can dump the tapered axles and get more modern brakes on the rear also.

I doubt it's the commercial 360view referred to, but check this out.......they sure don't make car commercials the way they used to!

My friend at work recently purchased a ‘59 Dodge Sierra station wagon which shares the same front end and other styling. Pretty cool!

back in the day you had to chain a pitbull to each wheel to keep the hubcaps LOL wink

If you do pull the engine and separate the bellhousing or torque converter from the motor, It will need to be dialed back in. Very critical or it will take out the front bushing. the procedure is in the back of the engine section of the FSM wink beer

My cousin has a 59 that's two tone pink (or salmon), but it's a 4 door. Was in decent shape when he had it in his garage. He had to put it in the barn for a graduation party and never put it back in the garage. Raccoons got to the interior and destroyed it.

Congratulations on a great car. You probably already know this but there is a very good forum for those cars: www.forwardlook.net

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 08/02/21 01:33 PM

Can the engine be pulled with the transmission? I know they use a brake drum for park which would probably make it hard to pull. Maybe the radiator support comes out easy.

Cool commercials, I am a member of the forward look forum. This forum has been home for a long time though.

If it is red and white I saw it at the Illinois Train Museum show yesterday, my wife loved it!

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 08/02/21 03:08 PM

yes easily. The E brake cable & band assembly can be removed from the back of the trans. Disconnect speedo cable, E- brake, cooler lines and shift cable(s). A factory service manual will be very helpful. Don't know if the MY MOPPAR website goes back that far or not. Could also try the old car manual project and as previously mentioned the Forward Look site wink

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 09/21/21 01:35 AM

Oh, the later 70's Mopars (B & F bodies) have great disc brakes for that conversion. AAJ kits have issues from what I've heard.

The car that hooked me on station wagons was my folks 1959 Sierra Spectator. Front and rear air, 383. 3 seater. Memories from fall, 1958,when we all went to Parrish and Clark Dodge to pick it up. Was like a party event!

Nice, Wagonmaster! That's a cool picture; what year was it taken? What is the truck behind their wagon?

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 10/04/21 07:35 AM

I am going to say 1961. That is me on the horse, and I rode Roany [the horse] in '61. That was our last Ford truck, a 1957. Orchard pond fishing. Didn't get much better. Our cattle ranch NE of Claremore, Ok. The good life!

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 10/04/21 10:25 PM

I am surprised your car doesn't have the oval steering wheel, or was that Plymouth only? I recall one of those around town when I was a kid, a D500 badge on the trunk if I remember correctly.

Loved that first ad, could do without the "moon, June" poetry in the narrative.

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 10/04/21 10:31 PM

When I was a kid, 12/13, and walking to school a neighbor had a '59 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible on his front lawn for sale. Everyday I got a little bolder. It had everything, swing out seats, oval steering wheel. Finally, I did it, I opened the hood; there it was, a dual four barrel, Golden Commando. I think it was $1200.00.

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 10/08/21 05:58 PM

My 1st wife's grandmother had a '59 Dodge Coronet , I want to say a 500 but I'm not sure, two tone pink. Very cool car to cruise around in. Hers had developed rust over the headlight eyebrows. When she she died, the family was insistent on selling it , despite my lobbying to hang on to it.

Those things look a mile long with all the trim and fins on them.

Nice car!

Re: 59 Dodge Custom Royal - 10/09/21 02:03 AM

Still have the riv. Drove it to the Wooster swap meet last weekend. Stopped by Mel’s on the way back, but he wasn’t around.
Haven’t talked to Jeff in awhile. Going to have to give him a call. Whatever he builds for you ought to run strong.
