torquing fasteners

do you ever have trouble torquing fasteners correctly ?
tightening up until they strip or break, then back off 1/2 turn ?
here is the solution.............

You probably have seen the videos of the yearly competition for NASCAR mechanics to assemble a V8 engine.

Has there ever been a formal competition to judge how close a trained competitor can tighten a series of fasteners with a normal wrench to near “correct” torques?
I write “correct” because torque values vary plus/minus 20% as to whether the bolt has been stretched to the true tensile stress needed.

Years ago I saw a speed contest between two brothers and their cousin as to who could cut a half inch diameter hole with an acetylene torch in half inch thick steel plate accurately enough that the as cut hole could be tapped for a bolt.

The oldest brother (Bill Everidge) won.

Their Cornwall England born foreman (Art Pender) told me he had seen Bill and the two others torch cut holes and successfully tap them many times.

I'll take one in SAE & one in Metric...

Oddly enough, I have an accurate feel for 30 ft/lbs and 75 ft/lbs, even won a bet on 75.
In my case it's just familiarity, not talent.
Everything else, I need verification...

Ah, yes. Back in the day on the flight line my buddy got caught by a QA inspector for not using a torque wrench on a certain fastener. My buddy was so sure the torque was correct he went and got a torque wrench from the tool crib and tested the bolt. Sure enough, he was right on the money.

"Fine" the inspector told him. "I won't write you up for incorrect torque. So now just show me the current PMEL calibration sticker on your elbow."
