Road trip snacks, what’s your poison?

Just got back from a Missouri to Florida run.

Ate quite of those packaged hot fries you see in fuel stops.

Just now back home, polished off some of those HOT bar b que pork rinds.

That’ll wake you up!

Zingers are great for a sweet hit.

Maybe one of those packaged honey buns???

Reeses mini peanut butter cups if its not hot out

Cheddar cheese Combs - other substitute flavors acceptable

Beef jerky and pringles.

Easy low mess snacks.

Peanut M&M's. Nice and neat.

X2 on Peanut M&Ms or the rarer Almond M&Ms.

Nutrigrain bars or the better tasting Aldi version.

Ritz brand Peanut Butter round crackers (Ritz makes the discontinued Kroger brand)

Make yourself 4X strong coffee by putting in twice the coffee and half the hot water in a “pour over” filter then refill those small glass pancake syrup bottles from Cracker Barrel to make “shots” of smooth coffee concentrate that keep you alert but with less water that would increase the urge to pee.

Keep one of those smooth edge rim can openers in the truck along with a “Spork” to eat from cheap open cans of fruit cocktail or corn beef hash, doubling as food for winter emergencies.

The best value sit down road meal is McDonalds “Big Breakfast” any time of day.

Lance 6-packs are a fine choice to grab at a stop too

Water (or juice) and fruit...sometimes deer jerky, if I happen to have some made. I'm not a big snacker in the first place, but I don't like anything bready or heavy laying in my stomach when I'm sitting for hours on end. Same goes for flying. Having said that, I DO like Louisiana hot pork rinds on occasion.

For in car/truck snacks, we usually pack a small cooler and will throw fruit or celery sticks. Rest stop purchases usually result in beef jerky or chicharrones (pork rinds). On occasion, M&Ms plain or peanut for the sweet desire. Oh and a couple bottles of water too. I am down to drinking just one 7 oz Pepsi a day, so I save that for the meal (usually pack that in cooler too).

Top bad they dont seem to make the “ nip cheeze” ones any more. Kinda mustard colored crackers. Mighty tasty

Usually pretzels, beef jerky, fruit in the car/truck.
Lots of water & coffee.
I try for a decent meal - protein & veggies - at least once per day.

I treat myself better now than I did when road trips were like long-distance qualifying runs.

somehow most of my road trips start by stopping at Wawa to get :
at least 2 big coffees
Sizzli of some type
honey roasted peanuts or cashews
purple Doritos (forget what the actual name is)
Jack Links hickory smoked jerky if they have it
Ginger Ale
Then I arrive wherever and wonder if I actually got any of the food in my mouth given the amount of crumbs on the seat lol

Deer jerky, pretzels and water

Pork rinds/Cracklins

Swedish Fish or beef jerky.

Coffee, Hostess cupcakes or doughnuts or some kind of homemade cookies. Also, when stopping for a bathroom break, hitting a McDonalds for a burger, fries and a Coke.

Corn Nuts.

I am on a constant road trip and buy cheap protein bars at Aldi, 6 of them for $1.69 and breakfast bars too, a bit more expensive but good. I also take the peanut butter/chocolate crispy things, never remember what they are called. Aldi has lots of good road trip snacks cheap!

I gotta have something to drink, so Gatorade and Rehab’s help to quench the thirst.

A few years ago my wife invested in a coupe of those 32 oz stainless steel insolated drink cups. Those things will keep a little ice and water cold all day in 90 degree heat. We carry an 18 can tall cooler in the trunk. in the cooler we carry pop, a 1/2 gallon of milk (my wife's addiction, she wants a glass of milk every night), a few bottles of water (we carry the flavored drink mix for 16.9 oz water bottles), and we put one of those stainless cups in the cooler. The other stainless cup we fill with water.

We start the morning off with a sit down breakfast, usually at a truck stop. We fill the gas than, get a bag of ice for the cooler and split the cup with the water in 1/2 and fill both cups with ice. One cup goes back into the cooler, the other in the cup holder in the car. My wife gets a large coffee (I don't drink the stuff, she has a special cup for that as well). I'll get aa Pepsi for the can koozie for the 2nd cup holder in the car.

We carry a bag of goodies behind the seat she can reach while we drive. In the bag is Twizlers in a zip lock bag, usually a couple bags of different nuts, a zip lock bag of cookies (my down fall), and Rice Krispy marshmallow squares, and a couple different bags of chips with the chip clips to seal them up and keep them fresh for a week.

We often stop someplace around noon. might get something light to eat, or may grab a snack from the goodie bag, take a rest room break, and get out and stretch for a few minutes. If we need to change out the water cup, that will happen then. We also stop somewhere around 3 and repeat.

We are well past the point of the marathon drives. We pretty much limit our driving day to 6 hours or 300 miles. I tend to get tired after that, especially if its hot outside. We have arrived at the point that the drive is as good as the destination. If we see something along the way that catches our interest, we will stop and check it out. By traveling like this, we find we arrive at our destination relaxed and not wore out from the drive. We enjoy the trip so much better.
We also try real hard to stay off the interstate highways as much as possible, that makes for a much more scenic drive. it takes a little longer to get where we are going, but its more fun. Being retired helps a bunch. Gene

My poison was prime rib from some restaurant in Western MN. 30 minutes after dinner my guts were burling. Didn't hurl, but felt like it for 2 hours after. Finally I started coming out of it thank God! Man, they fed me poison & I only ate two bites of it.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing such as great idea over here and also uses of koozies. koozies are used to insulate a chilled beverage from warming by warm air or sunlight. Using a koozie can reduce the rate a drink warms in the sun by up to 50%. Secondary uses include easily identifying one's beverage from another person's and for marketing.

No offense but being from a different country I find most American junk food tastes like crap. The only thing I like are Fritos corn chips but too many and the salt burns my tongue. There is one thing I absolutely MUST have though when I visit the U.S. ... Dunkin Donuts !!! Particularly the jelly filled but I also like the apple and spice as well as the strawberry glazed. I actually can't stand Tim Hortons crap - any of it !! For dinner I like Texas Roadhouse. If I eat somewhere like a Denny's I like the chicken fried steak with the sausage gravy. I like the patty melt at Elias Big Boy with cream of broccoli soup and strawberry pie for desert. When I'm travelling alone in the U.S. I'm pretty much a creature of habit!

That Mickey Dees food would mean I'd be need to stop for another potty break in 20 minutes or less.

The problem I have is if I have an open bag of something I like its gone pretty quick lol. But, if I had to choose right now it would be the "Beaver Nuggets" from Buckee's. But I don't live near one of those so I have to take a road trip to get my favorite road trip food.

Funny story I bought some beaver nuggets at Buckee's. My at the time 7 year old had zero interest in them, wouldn't even try them. Later on it turns out that he thought hey were from an actual beaver, like chicken nuggets are from chickens. Once he learned it was more or less candy it was game on ha.

cooler with plenty of water & tea.. NO SODA's! as they increase the frequency of restroom stops...I refuse to stop more than once every 5 hours.

Years ago drove from Detroit to Washington DC during a time I was really trying to watch my diet.
Stopped for a couple meals, but my snacks consisted
of orange slices (actual oranges, not candy) and broccoli marinated in some cheap italian salad dressing overnight.
I kept it all in a couple bags in a small cooler with plenty of ice.
Feeling hungry? Marinated broccoli. Feeling tired? Orange slices.
Drank only water. Worked out pretty well. The 3 passengers in the car had a bunch of cookies, candy and Chips. We arrived,
I felt great, and they all felt like crap LOL.

All-American Blackberry Fruit Pies when we can find them. They're like sex, except I'm having it.
Those knee-high Pringles' tubes for sure.
Wildberry Licorice but I get the impression since they were my favorite, it's been discontinued. Haven't been able to find it in a few years now.

I'm not much of a Chocolate person, and it melts and gets gross so very rarely do you see Chocolate on a road trip with me. I might get a hankering for an Eat More bar though. But I do terribly miss the purple, Caramel Eat More bars. Again, anything I like gets discontinued.

For drinks; goto is Cherry Coke. Seconded by RC Cola. Again, neither of which I can find in Canuckistan.

Fast Food stops exclude anything I CAN have at home. So, no A&W, no Mickey D's, no Dairy Queen. Heck yes to Arby's, Wendy's, SONIC (OMG, yes!) Jack-in-the-Box or any of those wonderful, exotic Fast-Food places that don't come north of the 49th.

And yes, I'll be in a pine box before I'm 65. I've come to accept that. Hence, why I'm shoving anything good n' tasty in my mouth while I can. No males in my family born after 1945 have survived to see their golden years. We're cursed. If the drink don't get 'em, then it was either Cancer or Heart failure.

My goal is to be buried in a Steinway casket.

A new snack for me to have in the car is the chewy Oatmeal-Cranberry cookie from Aldi stores.
Others must like them too, because they are now sold out most of the time.

An Aldi manager told me that to be “first in line” when new stock arrives
I was going to have to use the Aldi app to order the cookies for curb side pick up,
then come in when notified my pre-bagged order was ready.

Dot's Homestyle Pretzels!

Just got done with a 4000+ mile road trip with my Dad. We went through a case of bottled water, 2 large bags of Twizzlers, and 2 large bags of Peanut M&M's. These do not make a mess in the car. Best bang for the buck, to stop and eat is Texas Road House.

One thing I quickly learned not to take on a road trip is Brisk Tea. A friend and I were heading to Tennessee to look at a car. We decided we were thirsty and both of us grabbed a Brisk Iced Tea from the cooler. I think we made it two exits down the road before we pulled off on the exit ramp and stood there like two 6 yrs olds that could not wait any longer. Only problem was we were about 30 at the time....

I like a few grilled pork chops and an ice cold beer for the first 100 miles, then after that its just gas station jerky and Grape crush until I see a fast food sign with anything but Mexican slop.
