need to replace my garage door opener - 05/24/21 01:55 AM

Any advice on what one to get for a replacement? My old door is 16 wide. It has a 1/2 hp overhead door( python2} chain drive that is about 24 years old and no longer working.

Yep those are the winner. Get the nice one with the WiFi. You’ll use that more than you’d think. I miss it after moving to a house without it. New place has an old lift master that’s good, and has a genie that is louder and sounds clunkier than the lift master.

My Genie is 20 plus yrs old. The only thing I've replaced is the travel limiter. Is it noisy yes I don't care. It works flawlessly. Hell when my kids were little the would hang on to the door and use as a lift. Though my head was going to explode the first time I saw it. Learned they had been doing it for yrs after school.

If it's a torsion spring door get a liftmaster 8500. Mounts on end of torsion shaft and gets rid of everything else leaving ceiling clean. Stu loved em. Hard to see but it's the small black box on left on wall behind bike. I have one on the 16ft front garage door too. Comes with a bluetooth light that plugs in where old opener was installed. I have both on same signal so when either door opens or you trip motion detector on wall panel the both come on together. Bright enough to go in and out of garage without turning on any lights. You can see it between the led fixtures.

I'm using the Liftmaster direct drive/jackshaft, 8500, units with the wifi capability. Nice units that mount on the wall to the side of the door. This free's up the space lost by the usual lift units.

Im guess you last two guys were writing your replies at the same time. With the same suggestion and reason.

One thing you may notice is that the instructions for the Liftmaster treat the reader like a seasoned installer. Vague instructions, steps not clearly defined, wording is not clear to a layman either.
Excellent product, terrible instructions.

And their tech/help department blows. We tried putting the camera's in but could not get them to synch up. Got the run around from tech plus crickets. Its an ongoing problem with Chamberlin from what I've read online. Sell the product but play dumb after.

There are 3rd party wifi retrofit kits you can get for $20-30, check Amazon.

My daughter installed the shaft mounted opener, not sure of the brand. They love it, it's a much cleaner look/installation, she has battery BU since in a hurricane zone, and a number of other features, with a nice robust separate solenoid dead bolt lock. She lives in a rather upscale neighborhood, and the permit inspector had oddly never seen one, but was impressed.

I will use the same on my door upgrade soon.

I'm going to switch to an 8500 but have no desire to connect anything that someone could possibly hack into to gain access in to my house.

Swinging gates must not have a skewed post. The sashes must be level and open easily, without unnecessary effort. It is better if they hang on hinges with bearings.

The instructions for the drive usually have a graph of the ratio of the length of the sash to its height. That's why the weight of the leaf is a relative indicator. In addition to the weight of the gate leaf, there is another important parameter: the sail and wind resistance. The higher this parameter, the harder it is for the drive to push the gate leaf, including strong winds. It's important which Garage Doors you choose. Very good if they are wood.

I also installed a Liftmaster 8500 in my shop and love it. SUPER quiet and no tracks since it installs to the wall. I never thought I would be able to use a jackshaft opener since my doors are spaced 1 foot apart but the opener only needs 8 inches. I thought the install was very easy. The hardest part for me was rewiring my shop because I originally put outlets at every door where the traditional openers would go.

For those concerned about the Wi-Fi capability and getting hacked, just buy the basic 8500 without the battery backup or the Wi-Fi kit (MyQ Gateway). It's a lot cheaper and if you decide to add the MyQ Gateway kit, it's only about $60 on Amazon and controls up to 16 Liftmaster/Chamberlain devices. That means you can buy the less expensive openers and then buy just ONE MyQ Gateway for all of your doors/gates (unless you have more than 16 openers). You can also buy the battery separately later, too.

I plan to buy more for my other doors but I wanted to try one first and make sure it would fit and work well. Final verdict: Love it!!

I have a Liftmaster and added the MyQ to it. We sometimes forget to shut the garage door and closing it from anywhere is a nice option. We also go for walks and having the capability to open or close it when we are coming or going is also nice. I set up a Wyze V3 camera on the far wall to monitor the garage door area. That way I can see if it's open/closed and any activities that happen. I don't trust the MyQ to be 100% accurate if it's open or closed and the camera helps confirm that. Hacking the garage door opener, MyQ, or breaking a window are all options if someone wants to get in. Odds are low in our neighborhood about that.

I’ve left notes on the front door for UPS/FEDEX delivery drivers to call me. It’s great being able to open the garage door from work so they can put the packages inside using the MyQ. I had our opener with that feature installed professionally. 14’ ceiling and large RV size door.

We've got ours set to auto close at 9:00 PM in case we forget to close it. It's happened a handful of times.

I put a 2 car garage addition on 20+ years ago. At that time I grabbed a Genie from HD and put it up. Worked fine until this year, then it died. I had the door company that installed the door come out and install a belt drive Liftmaster. Works great and quiet...uses the same MyQ app so wireless, remote function. I don't need battery backup...if I lose power, pull the cord and roll the door up. Think it was $400 completely installed with haul away of the Genie.

I got one at my old house and can’t wait to install at this one. These are great. Big power too. Had to get it because I did a complete reworking and changed out two wasted single bay width doors and went to a huge single door that weighed too much for the old openers.

The ability to have somebody put packages that arrive into your garage while on vacation is great. Even more so these days to when things ship on huge delays.

No need to change out working openers . You can upgrade your opener these are only $30 and fit most openers. Same IQ tech. Open and close door from anywhere. Young neighbors wanted to replace broken touch pad but I got them this instead. Works great and you can always check door anytime with your phone to see it it's open or closed.

Simple wifi install.

Mine keeps saying offline at least once a week. I have to unplug it and plug it back in. Sucks if you are not home. I have a smart plug I can control from anywhere and plugged the MyQ into that. We will see if that works. Everyone said it's the wifi, but the wifi cameras are all fine.

I wish I would have done this wall mount style. I still may add eventually. As you can see, I use every square inch of my garage.

WiFi signals can suck in some areas in the same room or have some interference messing them up and just moving your control to another outlet or location might fix your problem. It can drive you nuts when the signal is better outside than inside.

After reading this thread, bought this on Amazon and its been working great, only $22.
Hated the feeling when I might have left the garage open, now I can check and open or close from my phone.

Re: need to replace my garage door opener - 05/29/22 04:37 AM

My wifi opener had a sticker on it saying not to use led bulbs. That might be messing with your signal.

Re: need to replace my garage door opener - 05/29/22 10:04 AM

I don't have LED bulbs in the garage door opener, but there are LED's in the other light fixtures in the garage. I truly think it's the camera I have causing interference. Every since I put it in the garage, the remote distance has decreased. I'm fine with that since I want a camera in the garage. I see the wifi garage door opener adaptor as a luxury and not a need, so if it works most of the time that's cool too.
