Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's???

Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's??? - 03/12/21 02:25 AM

So, I have a T7 '69 roadrunner that is currently wearing mag 500 wheels. I kind of like the look of the steel wheel painted body color with hub caps.

So, what's you're preference????

Anything but body colored wheels and dog dishes/poverty caps....full hubcaps/wheel covers are ok

For me, it depends on the color & trim. I've run both.
Base model, no trim, most colors steelies are low-profile/stealth, especially wide ones.
The Magnums add eye candy, especially to some colors (white, yellow to name two) and IMO are more fitting for vinyl top or higher-trim cars.

You can always buy a set and if it turns out you don't like them they are easy to sell later. Those Plymouth Division hubcaps are always going to be worth money to someone.

I had a 60's Mustang years ago and it came with aluminum mags that I sold and replaced with another set. Later on I got bored with those and sold them to a co-worker an used the $$$ to buy a third set of wheels.

Then when I realized I had a problem finding wheels I could live with I sold the car before I could buy a forth set. realcrazy

I have 3 1970 models so far & just made a deal on a 4th.

Body colored steelies with caps on 2, rallyes on one & steelies with lug nuts (6) on another, the newest addition.

What they all came with originally stays. beer

I like Magnum 500s on more "dressy" cars with more chrome, also black cars.

I like body colored steelies on more "stripped down" models and high-impact bright colors.

Or whatever mood I happen to be in at the time.....

I also like the painted steelies with dog-dish on high impact and bright colors, but I like them even better with cop wheels.

Magnums are great.
But in 14" only.
15" is for Ford

If it has a vinyl top, or a lot of chrome, it needs more then the body color painted wheels. I've sported many with the Mag 500s, and many with the 70s Road Wheels and the screw on center caps & trim rings.
Not a big fan of hub caps in any form, just give me chrome lug nuts and send the caps down the road. If it still has the black painted wheels, unless they are at least 7" wide, they just have to go.
I like most mag wheels, but they too have to be matched to the car, some cars just don't look right with some mag wheels. Gene

I say Road Wheels (Mopar Magnum 500, 14" units with trim ring) . . . however, I went with 15" units with Trim rings, from Specialty Wheel before they got bought by Coker . . . .

Re: Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's??? - 03/13/21 04:07 AM

Looks like the group is split down the middle.

My car is pretty plain (T7 with no vinyl top). Sounds like just over half would have my car is mag 500's instead of steel wheels.

I have a set of cop wheels but no hubcaps. Maybe I'll see if I can find a set and get the wheels painted and try them out. I know that many folks would probably prefer the chrome wheels but Iike being a little different sometimes...

Plain steel wheels puke

Magnums in 15" if it must appear a factory.

Otherwise, I'm aftermarket wheels all the way.

Anything but steel wheels. On restored cars I always felt like people were trying to hard to make their car seem like it was original. I never liked them when those cars were new and they were the first thing that got changed out.

Re: Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's??? - 03/17/21 03:34 AM

Seems like everyone can tolerate mag 500's, most even prefer them.

Seems like almost no one likes body color steel wheels, most even hate them.

I'm still strongly considering the steel wheels. It won't cost me much to give it a try. If I don't like it I can always change them back. tonguue

Here's a twist and for sure a different approach and for sure to get a laugh and a few choice comments..................................FULL WHEEL COVERS. Hey they were the next best things compared to "poverty dog dish wheels" and a good holdover until one decided on aftermarket slots, TT's, Keystones, Crager SS, or a number of other back in the day wheels. Dare to be different........I dare you wink wink

(wish I could find the member's '69 green Road Runner with the FULL WHEEL COVERS )

Re: Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's??? - 03/18/21 09:32 PM

Well, here's my $.05 worth- If you go Magnum's, the (Ford style) 15's are head and shoulders above the original Mopar style. They're just a nicer looking wheel, and they complement pretty much any B-body. My feeling on steelies with dishes is that body color steelies look crappy. They look even crappier on a high option car, and worse on E-bodies. A-bodies and early 60's (Max wedge era) B-bodies can wear steelies the best. Black steelies are much less unpleasing to the (read: MY) eye. I happen to think the best use of steelies is when you are trying to project a "street brawler" look. Even better is steelies on the back, with a tall, fat tire, and skinnies up front on a narrow Cragar SS or an ET slot.

I always thought of it as the "NO BULLS&%^" look. Purdy wheels are like chrome valve covers smile

I still regret not buying your brother's car when it was for sale a few years ago. It was really nice and fairly priced at the time. It looks killer with the magnum 500's!

On the original topic, I don't care for steel wheels on almost anything, I much prefer the day 2 look OR a nice set of magnum 500's.

So far I'm sticking with original full wheel covers or Day-2 wheels of your choice. Dog dishes or plain steel wheels black or body color just don't do it for me.......unless it's an A12 car with chrome lug nuts grin boogie LOL.

Re: Body colored steel wheels or Mag 500's??? - 03/19/21 05:01 AM

I wonder how cost effective it was to paint the wheels body color when putting on dog dish "hub" caps at the factory versus not painting the black steel wheels that I think came black from the wheel supplier and putting full wheel covers on? I'm sure the body color paint wasn't as much cost as wheel covers but the time, man hours, baking, and moving them inside of the factory had to be a little more than to just using the black steel wheels a received from the supplier??? And how much was the cost of the dog dishes......in today's prices at any swap meet or after market sales they are 10x more than full wheel covers laugh2 wink grin
