Illinois toll road charges - 02/23/21 01:46 PM

My trucks rarely get near Chicago but, this week I had some loads to pickup in Portage , Indiana --If you are from out of state do they send a bill to us based off plate number ? -- we don't have a Illinois toll tag

I passed thru one in a rental a few years back and they had no problem sending me a bill out of state.

Was just down there last week. Saw signs about paying tolls online but unsure if they bill you based on plates? Even if you don't get there often an I-pass is definitely the way to go. Tolls are 1/2 price.

There is ways to pay the tolls online, there are signs by the tollbooths that say “missed a toll? Pay online” I think they may charge more if they have to bill you, so best to pay online and there’s a period might be 5 or 7 days you can do that before they bill you.
Also there are manual pay toll lanes, however, I’m not certain but they may be temporarily closed due to Covid.

Pay before the 14 day grace period. Go to the Illinois tollway web site. Have patience, it’s not the most friendly site to navigate. Know the route of your toll travel.

I can't help but wonder what would happen if your plates are mounted upside down...

Would probably get marked in the system as unreadable and flagged for review by human eyeballs. No different if you were to drive through the toll with no plate on the car.

Don't ignore the online payment method.

Pretty sure they do not bill based on plate ID unless this was done recently. I missed an $0.85 toll there about 2 years back. About 2 months or so later I got a bill for $30.85 from an outside collection agency. Unless they have changed their procedures....once it goes to collections you are stuck with the bill plus collection fees.

Go on line NOW and pay it.

I have a transponder, but due to a credit card number change there was no way to "keep it full". Down thru and back I thought the thing was working.

I got a bill for $238 bucks and change. My saint of a wife made phone calls and took care of it and we only had to pay normal charges.
They could see the transponder hits on an empty account and that was the ONLY reason I didn't have to pay the big charges which include a fine.

Point is, if they bill ya, you aint going to be happy.

I went through it twice in the last couple of months. Mid December and a couple of weeks ago. Have yet to get a bill.

I tried to pay online. They were forcing me to set up an account. Not happening!!!!! They also said on the website that they changed the fee structure so that paying by mail was reasonable. I am in wait and see mode.

Re: Illinois toll road charges - 02/23/21 11:23 PM

This is from their website. Its $3.00 if you don't pay immediately and they send you a bill. $5 extra after the 3rd notice.

Invoicing Begins - Unpaid Tolls After June 25, 2020

Beginning June 25, a new process for unpaid tolls will defer the issuance of violation notices by several months. Unpaid tolls will no longer be met out of the gate with a “one size fits all” $20 violation if left unpaid.

Customers still have at least 14 days to pay unpaid tolls online with no additional fines or fees. If left unpaid, owners across all vehicle classes will now receive an invoice for unpaid tolls with an initial fee that better aligns with the underlying tolls associated with the class of vehicle. Passenger vehicles will see an 85 percent reduction in initial costs, with a $3 invoice fee, rather than a $20 fine for each unpaid toll.

The chart details the invoice fees customers will see. Customers across all classes will see a reduction, and violations will only occur after a notice remains unpaid after over 90 days.

I just got a notice in the mail from FL, saying I owed $2 or so for a SunPass toll. They had a black and white pic of the back of a car, and the plate was visible. Not my car, not my plate, and not a car I rented and drove in FL. I haven't been in FL since 2014. I emailed them and told them it was a mistake, and 2 days later they emailed me saying the file was closed, no charges owed.

Just went through them today. They will bill you by your plate, not to worry, they won't let you get away with anything! laugh2 They want you to go online and do it, there are no manual lanes open, and if you have a Semi it would be pretty tough to throw exact change in the baskets for their extortion amount... work

Not me, I haven't renewed my plates in over a year as all our DMV's are closed down due to Covid. We have until October 2021 now to renew them, including my drivers license that expired last April... rolleyes

Re: Illinois toll road charges - 02/26/21 02:51 AM

My girlfriend's daughter took my car on the tollway last November and neglected to tell me. It took about 4 weeks to get the bill. They waived the fine so the bill actually equaled the tolls.

I have an I-Pass she could have used if she would have asked.

To He#$ with Illinois. I was traveling through to duck hunt in Arkansas, and stopped to eat. Idiots had restaurant lick down. Meaning travelers didn’t have a place to eat.

I made it to MO, and finally found some sanity. On my return trip, I made sure I ate and filled the tank in MO so I didn’t spend a dime e in that forsaken State.

If you live there and pay those absurd property taxes, you deserve your misery. Only dumber place to live is California.

My income tax in Il. was $0 because they don't tax retirement income or SS. Indiana does tax retirement but not SS. So instead of paying $0 if I lived in Indiana my state taxes would have been $5,750. Hell that's almost twice what I pay in property taxes. So for me I'd be a lot dumber living in Indiana than Il. Plus there isn't any toll roads downstate.

And some of us are stuck here, most of us, at least those of us not on sucking on some manner of government teat, are plotting to escape somehow someday!
It wasn’t always this bad. When I bought my house a few years after graduating college in the 80s, property taxes were less than 25% of what they are today on the same, never added onto house, state income tax was half what it is now, vehicle license plates were less than 1/3rd now, and sales tax rate was around half what it is now.
“Those were the days”. bawling
