I agree, this 76 Monte Carlo went for 30k also. Rare color and low mileage helped, but 30k seemed real high.

Re: Mecum - 01/18/21 10:22 PM

I recorded all 2,000 hours laugh2 and wound up watching it pretty much all of it.
I did fast-forward through some of the really hideous cars, like that hardware-store-woody abomination & fugly Caddything.
Seemed to me prices were healthy, sometimes REALLY healthy, for the good cars.
Also seemed like a few sellers over-valued their stuff (Bid Goes On).
Overall, contrary to what some say, the hobby seems to be in good health.
I kept seeing Lee Smith's A/FX car in the background, but somehow missed it.
The magic # on that car has been $450K, last I recall, did it finally sell ?

Dick Landy’s 64 sold for lot less a few years ago. I’m thinking &450K will be a waiting game until one person has to have it.

Re: Mecum - 01/19/21 01:31 AM

Based on my observations over the past year or so ,,,,, . Car prices are doing very well for quality cars. Some even rising to some degree , ( such as 66-67 hemi cars now consistently over $50k ) others dropping back. Who would have thought 68-69 Hemi cars being back under 100k,,,some well under

Cars with issues such as missing fender tags or discrepancies in the build remain unsold

Re: Mecum - 01/19/21 03:20 AM

Steve Juliano's 1971 440-6 Cuda Convertible sold in May of 2019 for $1,155,000 and now it went for $962,500 with fees, so bid was $866,250 using 10% fee. Now he has his fees, say he got a deal at 5%, that's $822,937. Wow, at least a $332,000 loss in under 2 years. I think people paid way to much at the Juliano Auction or the market is getting softer on Muscle cars. Wonder how the Mod top that sold for $400,000+ would do now.

The interested buyers (babyboomers) of 66-74 muscle cars are getting older now and interest is withering. I can say for I am one and paying those prices is not of interest to me. I would rather go buy 4-5 hellcats and a couple of vipers than pay $900K for one old car. 10-years from now those 66-74 muscle cars will be way less money as the babyboomers reach full retirement.

Correcto...
Landy's Magnum was silver, I recall he would often bring it to the cruise-in @ Flames in Northridge on friday nites.
I would often get there early and 1 nite he was there, sat down, pulled out a dyno sheet for the SRT Magnum and advised he was happy he got 50 more HP out of it...
Landy was very personal and talkative, he had many entertaining stories from his past racing times.....

Just my $0.02... wink

I am not convinced that all cars that get tagged SOLD are actually SOLD. I don't know what is up with that particular car but that is something to consider.

The 71 cuda convertible formerly owned by Juliano is one of his cars Dana bought a few months before he passed.
Several of these cars have been reappearing at subsequent auctions after supposedly selling so it would appear Mecum is playing some auction games with them and they aren’t really selling.

I agree. Last time it "went" for 1M..then this auction 952K.....It's a nice example, low mileage, and in a good color, but column auto.. Two real bidders would really just have to want to "win" it.

a 70 hemi cuda can be had for 200k, maybe less - not sure now nice it may be, but they seem hard pressed to go much past 200k

Re: Mecum - 01/21/21 10:52 PM

The Boomer argument may be true for some, but hardly a majority of us. I'm 69 - as much as I refuse to believe it - and am buying another '69 Mopar to add to my fleet.
I have friends 1 generation and 2 generations younger than me who are into '60s muscle as well.
I've been complimented several times on my '68 Road Runner by young kids.
We - and the musclecar hobby - ain't dead yet !

I understand the notion of brand-new muscle with all the comforts of home, but anyone with a pulse & credit can do that.
I'll take the visceral, wrenching-involved stuff, without all the electronics and nannies.
