45 minutes - 10/04/20 11:17 PM

I know a lot of people here have nothing good to say about facebook, but their market place is pretty good and a viable option now that craigslist is a joke.

Listed an old Daytona MIG for sale on there tonite, 45 minutes later I was loading it in the buyers truck.

Maybe I priced it a little too cheap, but knowing what basic units sell for now, I'm happy with what I got.

I've bought from there too and never have had an issue.

A few days ago I scored am Offenhauser 4 barrel intake for a slant 6 for just $150 that was on FB marketplace. I've found a lot of deals and sold some stuff too.

Only because people hit that button rather than type something.

That being said though, I've had this issue a lot more with CL.

Re: 45 minutes - 10/05/20 12:47 AM

Sold a car on there last year. I did the whole car show/for sale sign thing and word of mouth trying to avoid Craigslist and the associated stupid stuff that comes with it. Tons of calls/questions/tire kickers but no real offers. Threw it on FB marketplace(LOTS of response within hours) and delivered it 2 days later for my asking price in cash.....done!! Some will say I listed it too cheap but I actually listed it higher than I ever thought the car would sell for....buyer was pleased and so was I.

Recently sold my 2004 BMW. Every response on Facebook was a real person, but out of 10-15 only two came to look at it, but nearly every one offered a price on Facebook (except the people that bought it). It was going slow on FB so I put it on Craig's List. EVERY response except one was a scam. The only one that wasn't was from somebody who read to the bottom of my ad just asking for a real person to respond. That'll be the last time I put a car on CL.

EVERY response except one was a scam.

That's the problem I run into. There may be that ONE response that's legit, but how many bogus replies do you have to wade thru to find it? It's just not worth it anymore.

I sold my '69 Dart the same day I posted it. Good stuff.

Re: 45 minutes - 10/05/20 09:01 PM

I've had okay luck giving things away for free on FBM, I've had decent experiences buying, but not much luck selling.

Latest episode was a good running 9hp briggs Generator engine for free that I put on there....oh boy. Instant feeding frenzy.
The whole world beat my door down it seemed, until it disappeared from the driveway.
It took about 30 minutes.

Before that I listed the toolboxes and ladder rack from this beast for $500 or best offer. Man, the messenger BLEW UP!!
Folks from as far away as Kentucky 'REALLY WANTED IT BAD' (they said in a phone call).
Then about a month went by, and no sale.
I dropped the price to $400. Still nothing, for several days.
Finally someone came and gave a deposit, so I removed it all.
there it sat for another 2-3 weeks until the guy finally showed up to get it.

I wanted a set of 18" wheels instead of the 17's shown in the pic.
Found a set for $100. When I got ahold of the guy he was overjoyed. Nobody showed any interest.
He was so darn happy to get rid of them and get a few dollars he dropped the price to $60 before I could even
set up a time to go pick them up. I didn't ask him to lower the price but that was pretty cool.

Re: 45 minutes - 10/05/20 10:01 PM

We remodeled our house recently. I put our old, builder-grade light fixtures on FBM, they were sold and gone within an hour. The same was true of a wall hanging we no longer had room for because we removed the wall it previously hung on. Our new toaster oven arrived today, and I'm going to list our old one on FBM for $5, porch pickup, and I bet you it's gone within a day. When our new stove and fridge arrive, I'll make an easy hundred selling the old ones on FBM, and I won't lift a finger to do it. The appliance guys will stick them in the garage, and a buyer will no doubt show up with a truck and take them.

Don't know about the rest of the world, but around here Facebook Marketplace is FULL of stolen goods. Be careful what you buy....y'know....if the deal seems too good, it might be worth asking why....

But yeah ... I've sold a couple old beater vehicles and other stuff there. Reading the responses makes it easier to filter out the tire-kickers/time wasters.

I just put a bunch of Mopar parts on Marketplace, I don't think I can handle the amount of people replying! eek

To "is this still available?" I reply with an equally lazy "yes it is". If no further response in the next day I delete that message.

Personally I love FB Marketplace. And during this covid crisis money seems to be burning a hole in people's pockets and its been awesome for getting rid of [censored].

In Canada we have Kijiji but we haven't really embraced Craigslist up here. However, regardless of what you search for you are first inundated with paid ads - usually the first half of the page. And THEN the same ads are repeated on each and every subsequent page. And then there is the whole pricing issue ... imagine looking for a used truck and you sort by price - low to high, and all the ads that pop up for page after page are late model trucks that dealers have advertised at the monthly payment cost !!

Re: 45 minutes - 10/07/20 01:41 PM

One thing I do not do is advertise anything as "free". You will get every lowlife in the area asking a dozen stupid questions, wanting it delivered, etc. and they'll probably have it listed "for sale" the moment they get it home. You're better off asking a reasonable price and actually getting a few bucks for it. Hell, if the person coming for it looks destitute, give them the thing for free.

Does anyone know how to broaden the "search" to an area larger than a 100 mile radius?

Re: 45 minutes - 10/07/20 03:56 PM

in one corner of the driveway, i have what i call the "free tree".
i stack "stuff" i want gone against the trunk with a big FREE sign attached, and usually within a day or so, someone snags it.
i have had instances where i was "loading" the tree and people stopped and asked what i wanted for my "stuff".
i told them i wanted it GONE. biggrin

If that's "lazy", what is my standard reply of "yes"? eek

Re: 45 minutes - 10/08/20 01:09 AM

Speaking of free.......

I had a bunch of house paint, 2x4's and 2X6's (cut down), pieces of plywood, some base board trim and a couple of batts of attic insulation. All of it was good, but I couldn't get a nibble no matter what price I put on it.

So, one day, I loaded it all into the back of my Dakota, backed up to the curb in front of the house and put a FREE sign on it stating to take everything but the truck. I put a free ad on CL and FB for it too.

Not expecting much, once I had it all set up, I left to run errands.

Less than an hour later, my neighbor called me and said I better come home and move my truck before that gets taken too. He described the scene like dropping fresh meat into a school of piranhas. According to him, over a dozen people showed up at pretty much the same time, and there was almost a fight over the paint! shock

They even took my 'free' sign I had made. laugh2

hey rhino, the FREE sign only comes out when "stuff" is available, so i think the tree is safe. i hope......... biggrin
