USB Turntables for converting vinyl albums to digital - 09/16/20 02:53 AM

USB Turntables for converting vinyl albums (records) to digital, anyone have one? How's the basic quality? I know that's relative but I have a couple of hundred vinyl albums from the '70's, '80's and even some from later that I would like to convert just for the heck of it. Anyone have some experience with them? TIA.

I forget what the software was called now because it's been years since I used it but the last records I did I used an adapter to connect a normal turntable which is better quality then the USB ones to the computer and the program could take the records as-is or clean up the sound.
At the end I found that I liked having digital copies of my favorite records but prefer listening to either the real thing or a clean digital copy.

I have one. The brand is Crosley. Works fine. Just a basic turntable with a USB port and connections for speakers if you just want to listen to it. Plug your computer into the turn table and the computer gets the music as a digital file. Can't remember the file specifics, haven't used it in a while. Bought it, saved a bunch of albums digitally and now it just sits. Wasn't a lot of money when I bought it. No regrets.

Mine's an ION, pretty easy to use but not overly happy with the software - it wants to organize all cuts off the album alphabetically which sucks on an anthology type album. Other than that I like it, but it does mostly sit now.

There are many USB turntables available some cheap ones, some better ones...
The most reliable are from Audio-Technica...
Regarding sonic quality, being digitized to MP3 the higher the sampling rate the better the audio quality but the higher rate use more memory store space.
For reasonable quality use a rate @ least 160 or higher..

Just my $0.02... wink

I've got one. It recommends Audacity, which works well, BUT it found way too many breaks when trying to separate songs. I digitized a couple of albums, but it was very time consuming. I'll get back to it one of these days.

Agree on all of this. You will hear compression at 128 or lower. If you want an all-encompassing solution I'd buy one of the Audio-Technica USB based turntables. If you have a turntable you're happy with the quality of already, you could buy an analog to digital converter and software for ripping vinyl.

I use Audacity software and a regular turntable with a modern cartridge. I digitize to a lossless format and a minimum sample rate of 44k. It is tedious work starting with the cleaning of the LP, manually filtering scratches, and manually separating tracks. In the end it is mostly worth it. Many of the CD versions of the material are poorly produced/compressed. The remastered versions are mostly better, it is still hit and miss where the original vinyl is sometimes better. Best to take it case by case.
