Plymouth Trouble Shooting Contest - article - 09/01/20 02:13 PM

Hagerty Insurance magazine (Issue 63, p26) has column "Short Shifts", with article on PTSC. One story relayed was someone got their 1978 Volare started, but tachometer was swinging wildly. Judge quietly mumbles "how many cylinders does it have". Contestant found 8 cylinder reluctor in the distributor of a 6 cylinder car. Must be interesting to hear how they "got it running" before correcting that.

I read that article, I was a Plymouth Trouble Shooter! Back in 1973/74 I remember dropping out in the first round. Tech school teacher was mad at me and my partner. Trying to remember the questions we lost out on? Anyway went on to be a Mopar tech since 1976,now a FCA Fiat/Alfa tech(LOL)

I went to state competition in 1974. We were 2nd team to turn in car. Missed air cleaner gasket. 9th team won. Missed it by that much. Have never worked in automotive industry. :-)

I was in the Plymouth Trouble Shooting Contest in 1969. I remember getting our Plymouth started first, but had a hard time getting it to run smooth. What they did was take the valve out of the PCV. Vacuum problem with PCV back in place. That one really got us. Bob

One of our high schools had the trophys in a display case. They had '69 roadrunners on top. A guy I worked with was on the State Champion team.

One of our customers at work has a Trouble Shooter's Trophy with a 67-69 Fastback Barracuda on it.

I was a 1961 local participant, my team missed the paper wrapping on the air cleaner element and lost.

In pre-internet days I bought a Plymouth Troubleshooting trophy from the local Salvation Army store for $2.00. Don't remember what car was on it. Sold it through a free ad in Auto Round-up for about 20.00 and thought I was the shrewdest businessman in town.

That tall boy is a nice one Redbird up.
I've got about 12 Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest trophies starting with 1965 in sequential order to 1972, a few from the late 70's and a couple from the 80's.
A Chrysler zone rep in the Syracuse area had them and his wife wanted them all gone and advertised them in a Swap Sheet.
I'm not sure but I believe Plymouth ran these into the early 90's ??
