What car would just HAVE to buy if it popped up?

What car would just HAVE to buy if it popped up? - 06/13/20 06:36 PM

I'm curious what car some of you would just have to pull the trigger on, even if you really shouldn't spend the money now, or don't have the room for, etc. I have four cars. Two of the newer era (5.7's, all the creature comforts), and two older ones to fill those needs ('89 Diplomat AHB stroked 360 and my '79 Power Wagon). So I don't have room for anything else, nor do I need to be spending money, insurance, tags, etc. BUT, if the right (and I know it's getting less and less likely) '77/'78 Fury/Monaco A38/440 comes along I'm going to do my best to pull the trigger. Reasons: I've always wanted to own something with a 440. What Mopar fanatic hasn't. Granted, this isn't the ultimate year for 440, but it's still an hp and very respectable 440 with beefy parts. Secondly, I always thought these cars were really cool, and remember seeing the FHP cruising I-95 when I was a little kid, sometimes at triple digits.

A reasonably welldone Cheetah replica would yank my wallet right out of my pants. Ya don’t see em, and I want one.

Yep....if I was standing next to that, my wallet would start talking to the owner. There would be nothing I could do.

Re: What car would just HAVE to buy if it popped up? - 06/13/20 08:36 PM

So this pretty much happened to me a year and a half ago;
As a kid a Valiant drag car used to go past my parents house every Friday on its way to the races and I loved it. I didn't know who or where it was from but it always went by and I always watched for it. Then in the mid eighties it went by with a for sale sign and at time I had no money (20-21 yrs old) . Then in '87 I went to the local drag strip that had just reopened after several years of closure and there it was. After a period of time I became friends with the new owner which led to becoming friends with the original owner as they were both long time friends. Anyway a lot of time had/has past and the second owner says he is going to sell the car but he is reserving it for the original owners (since passed) two sons. Turned out they were not interested in the car and with no need nor plans I bought it just because it was the first race car I thougt was cool. Future plans are to put a paint job and wheels as it was in the late seventies and put a blower on it and do some AA/G stuff.
First pic is from the '80s, Second is from the mid '90s to present and last is from the late '70s

I was lucky enough to get mine, my '68 Valiant. Fell in love with it first time Mike brought it to RT 66 in 98. Bought it in 2017.

I've got the two cars that I really want and have no money for anything, so it really doesn't matter, BUT if the '62 300H convertible that at one time belonged to Karen Carpenter came up I might have to rob a bank...same with the 1960 300F convertible 400 horse, four speed car...

i thought getting in and out of a Lotus was a pain, I'm too old and fat for this laugh2

"Climbing inside a Cheetah takes the dexterity of a lizard. You have to simultaneously hold the featherweight gullwing door up over your head, climb over the impossibly wide and fragile door sill, and get your legs past the large diameter steering wheel and into the painfully small pedal box, which is radically offset to the left. I have a couple cars on my list I’d be eager to buy if the right one turned up. That being said I already have one car in storage due to no room at my house!
69 Coronet R/T convertible
‘78-‘79 Magnum T top ( to put a FI engine and some other updates to make into a reliable comfortable cross country cruiser to take to far away shows etc)
Alternately a ‘77-‘79 Córdoba T top
Also I’m interested in owning a cool 65-70 Mopar station wagon

I have zero desire to add another car to the collection but if a really good deal on a nice wing car came my way I'd probably figure out how to make it happen. I had a chance to buy one years ago and didn't do it. I wish I would've bought one back in day. I just like them even though they are kind of nutty to drive on the street.

I had a NICE A66 4-speed 70 Challenger in the mid-90's. It was so nice and original the Mopar restorer i bought it off was apologizing it had "the wrong plug wires" on it. I was a punk ass, i didn't care. But the car was so nice i couldn't bring myself to modify it. Man i regret that. Drove it for a couple ov years without a single issue, then sold it like a dumbass for $4500. I see them in the same configuration/condition today for 30K. Even though i need a smaller car for my racing purposes (i bought a 68 AMX) i'd own that thing again in a [censored] second.

Ov course, at 30K, we're dreaming. So if we're dreaming, even though i'm a Challenger guy, i'll still go for my go-to since i was 8... a split-window Vette.

Well, it's not a Mopar, it's my dad's Jaguar. 1950 Mark V drophead coupe. So many childhood memories and adventures and family history intertwined with the history of this car. It's special to me...

Part of that history was dad having to sell the car when he got sick with Multiple Myeloma. Tough times taught me all about doing what you have to do to get by.

For me, it would be a late 70s Plymouth Trailduster with a 440 and fulltime 4wd. In very nice shape, that would be hard to pass up.
I nearly got a Plymouth Trailduster 4x4 years ago, a friend had it for sale. Nice shape, good driver, nothing wrong with it, 360-2V, automatic, fulltime 4wd. White/red two tone. Removeable roof. 1978. Had it for sale around 1999/2000. He was asking $1,500, I offered $1,200. He declined. Went back one week later and he sold it for $1,100. frown

Big block Dodge and Plymouth 4x4s seem really under-appreciated, but maybe I'm not in the thick of that crowd. Great looking machines for sure...

When something that's on your bucket list presents itself at a price you can afford, the choice is simple. The unbeatable opportunities lie in private purchases. Those with a large network of friends in the hobby can have their bucket list cars show up any time.. and present itself privately at a price that simply can't be passed up, which would demand a purchase. I've lucked into most of the cars I own.

Alfa Romeo GT Junior Zagato
Maserati Khamsin
Lancia Gamma Coupe
One of the Beineke's Charger Dayclonas
70 Satellite convertible
68 Dart GTS convertible
66 Dodge Hemi Charger
Lamborghini Espada S1
Alfa Romeo SZ
Plymouth Superbird w440
Lancia Stratos Stradale
Iso Grifo Series 2
Alfa Romeo Touring Disco Volante.
Lamborghini Miura

The unicorns:
Monteverdi High Speed 375/L

1970 Sport Satellite: 383 Super Commando, column automatic, B5 Blue with blue cloth bench seat interior and black vinyl top. A friend at the time (when we were teenagers) had this exact car when we graduated high school. I wanted that car with a passion and told him so and to let me know when he decided to sell it. He didn't let me know and sold it to someone else. Only saw it once after that so I don't know what ever happened to it. I've been looking for that car or a car just like it for 45 years. Never found another but would still love to have one while I still have some time on this earth.

Since I don't have deep pockets, it would have to be something that really tickles my fancy but is not super popular/expensive.
I don't need perfect, just a nice example - Don't want a museum piece or a big project.
1. 1961-62 Dodge Lancer/Plymouth Valiant wagon.
2. Mopar hearse.
3. Mid-70s W100 short bed - SB and auto are fine.

Oldjonny's wagon. Other than that, the chances I buy an old Mopar are very low.

Only one I know of in Dodges' advertising:

I bought it thanks to Diego. 1969 Mercury Cyclone. Now if a 41 Willys happened to cross my path, hmmmm.

I've been dreaming of buying something to use as a nice summer driver, but haven't really found the 'one' yet. In the last few years old cars for sale around here seem to be spit into two camps. On one side you have the super nice showcars that you would feel bad driving thru a water puddle with, and on the other side is the beat to hell project cars with no title that need thousands spent just to make it run. It's like all the middle ground driver type cars that were easy to find years ago have disappeared.

Some of the cars I've thought would be fun to own...

67-68 Barracuda notch or fastback

66-70 Coronet, Satellite, or Belvedere

72-74 E body - stupid money for these so I won't hold my breath on finding one as a driver.

66-67 Chargers in the right color. I think these cars have great interiors and would be fun to cruise in.

Well, if I was rich. It would be the maroon with white top and interior 68 Dart GSS that was for sale at Carlisle a few years back.

I really am not sure if there is anything out there that I would just HAVE TO buy . . . I always wanted a B body, after owning my 74 Duster360 for years, and getting into 300Hurst cars . . . . and I found my B body, didn't need to be a "fast" car, just a great cruiser cause I like to drive long distances . . . so, small block, AC, cruise control, and buckets/console, would be nice . . . . found my car - in FC7 no less ! And 6way manual drivers side seat !!! . . . some disassembly and reassembly was required .. . but that was 11k miles ago, and still love getting in and turning the key !!

If some apimp ever got off of his very rarely used M body 4 door with a sweet stroker A Engine that should run 12 flat with the AC and the cruise clicked on ....

I might exchange a small stake of Benjamins for it ... smoke

Lol I can't bring myself to do it. Mine doesn't have the a/c connected, although it was an a/c car. It would also definitely need at least different tires to run 12's. It does massive rolling burnouts laugh

Lol, yes it has a sure-grip and it's a factory 8.25 because it's an AHB. The tires are 235/70/15 and those DO NOT plant with the torque it has.

There are two on my list:

One is sunroofsuperbird's Challenger wagon, the other is the El Camino-ed Chrysler 300/H clone in Mopar Collector's Guide years ago.

For me I would NOT even hesitate to pull the trigger on a 1970 Sport Fury GT 440 or 440-6 if I found one for sale. My 2nd choice would be a 1970 Hurst 300 Chrysler.
