WiFi booster

WiFi booster - 03/24/20 12:36 PM

I’m sick of my cable company hosing me constantly for more money for crappy tv. We don’t have even our basic cable hooked up anymore and all I get on my home phone is marketing calls. They say we get a discount for the package deal with my internet. Right, they hose me for that as well. So, just thinking here. My Mom lives directly across the alley, maybe 150 feet. She has a big cable bill already with internet. My sister lives with her. Do you think I could get a WiFi booster an put into in her window and supply my needs. I use my internet for tv now and my computer. Any gurus out there have ideas?

When we were full-time RVers I had an antenna (still have it, AAMOF) that I put on the ladder and connected to a router in the camper. Worked great and the signal I was picking up was about 250 ft. away. I forget what the range was on it.
Not the one I have but works the same and says good for 300-400 ft. and several walls. up

be careful about double house hookups.
in some jurisdictions, that is considered "theft of services", even with your good intent.
it has happened several times around here.
it's ok for your cable provider to rip you off, but not the other way around.

I pick up wifi in my shop that is 75 feet from my house - with NO booster. I think you'd be good for 150 feet with a booster. Surely the distance would be in the booster specs !!

Keep in mind that using the internet for TV is very reliant on internet speed as well as what the signal is going through. And I haven't had much luck with Wifi for the tv's. One sits right above the modem and the other one floor directly below. Neither of them worked worth a damn wirelessly. Now both are hardwired to the modem and work like a charm. I've used a variety on android boxes and am now using an Amazon Firestick. This works great for paid services like Netflix and Prime BUT when I'm using a source like Kodi it still has buffering issues.

My shop computer is inside of a tight building and 100'+ from the main modem which is inside of another tight building. I am using two APs - access points - one at the modem, one at my computer. All is inside of the buildings. It works pretty well, I expect it would work better with external antennas but haven't done that yet.

In the OP's use it would be very hard for the cable company to prove theft of service. Radio waves are hard to prove. NOW, if you run an Ethernet cable over the alley and hooked up then yes easy to prove. A Cat5e cable is good for 320 feet. You just put a RJ-45 568B jack on both ends and use the Ethernet connect cables to the routers....

At the moms house you MUST make sure she has the security set high. Then using her SSID and password you just use the amplified antenna to capture her signal.
Now at her house you may need a 'Range Extender' that linkes to her SSID and rebrodcasts a second SSID and password. That extender need to be somewhere in the middle and get good receiption from both users. LAG in PING times will not let you 'GAME' but streaming most times it works. But you will get enough delay from when you click your mouse button till the reply gets back to you....

Another thing that helps is to scan what wifi cahnnels are being used and set your router to one that has the least number of users, check int eh evening as that is when most users are online.

This is the one I use http://www.wifichannelscanner.com/

Just ran a scan. have two other users on that channel so I will change to an unused channel.

Simple..they keep jacking rates and adding silly fees. My bill went up 3 months in a row and the only thing that changed was "misc, fees" even though they couldn't tell me what those fees were. I kept the internet and told them to keep the rest. I stream all my TV now using Firesticks, Prime,Netflix and Hulu+ Live. I get 200 mbps and even at that the live stuff on Hulu buffers at times, not horrible but it happens. I can live with it saving over $800/year compared to cable. I have more stuff to watch than ever...I don't miss cable one bit.

"Cord cutting" is the norm nowadays but you must have great internet. It has put a hurting on worthless cable TV channels as they (All cable channels) get a stipend of your monthly bill. Comcast and Spectrum have taken a hit but they are still doing fine as they have the market corned with their high speed internet. There are some free channels that are worthy to stream as well. Pluto TV and the Roku Channel to name a couple.

This^. I'd be dead in the water without internet. But I haven't had TV - sat or cable - for many years. Those times when I go to a home where the stuff is on. I see nothing I'm missing out on. It's crap. Mindless crap, propaganda and incessant stupid commercials for more crap. Wouldn't have it if it were free.

Internet is a necessity. And I don't do a lot of useless fooling around on it.

Exactly. I pay for BOTH cable bills to the tune of $340 a month now. They keep going up. All the added fees are ridiculous. All I use is internet now. All cable has is commercials anyway.

Did not work for my 25 miles from Seattle. It did bring in 7 channels, 2 PBS, 1 Spanish children, 4 QVC type. Wifi boost was OK but not great. Returned it.
