I used to drive a couple of the kids around to get them to sleep when they were little.

One of them liked the sound of a running vacuum cleaner or hair dryer.

Went through a couple replacement hair dryers until he got bigger and outgrew it...

And here's a totally different kind of "things you can't make up" story:

My Doctor office uses noise machines to protect privacy of adjoining rooms. Last visit I was exposed to "forest" noise complete with breeze in trees, a far off creek, crickets and frogs. The recording contained the synchronized chirping of crickets and frogs leading me to believe it was a natural recording.
Very relaxing with eyes closed.

Here's one I was made aware of recently. I find it to be very relaxing...

B-17 Propeller Noise Simulator

Here's the lead-in on the website:
Quote
The noise, without the war

In 1944, before the dawn of the jet age, war birds ruled the skies. Powered by the hum and thrum, and shake and rattle of piston driven propellers, they thundered ever onward to their targets. Their names: the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-29 Super Fortress, Lancaster and Liberator, are still familiar seven decades later!

Turn off the lights, put the headphones on, and crank volume up. Strap yourself into the pilot's seat... and fly back in time!
