Dog got skunked!

Dog got skunked! - 01/30/20 01:58 AM

Max the Meathead had a "close encounter" with a skunk six days ago. I was just sitting in the living room and started to smell it, stronger by the minute. Looked out front and the idiot was rolling in the dusting of snow, rubbing his face in it trying to get the stench off. No sign of the skunk, fortunately... it probably just wandered off.

Anyhow I escorted him to the shower and scrubbed/rinsed him twice with a mixture of peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dish liquid (seemed to have the best results on a Google search). But he still stinks. A lot. Everywhere he goes there is a nearly visible cloud of stench (although it IS better than the first day!)

Does anyone have a favorite de-skunking potion I can try cleaning him with again?
He's a sweet dog but not very bright. I sure hope he learned this lesson, though.

My wife is a Veterinarian and she said try this concoction if all you have is home remedy stuff:

1) cup hydrogen peroxide
1) tablespoon baking soda
3-4 drops of dish soap (Dawn, Joy etc)

Mix in a bucket and massage on the animal. There will still be some odor though

If you don't wanna do this, you can see if your local pet store or Cabelas, etc has this product called "Skunk Off" or something similar. Good luck!

I've heard washing them with tomato juice helps...
Maybe call your veterinarian.

Thanks... If you look closely at my post, that is what I used smile But it's good to know that a vet agrees up
Just wondering if there was something I could buy that works better than the home brew?

I may try another shower with more of the same mix (although he's really not fond of showers, he will cooperate once I get him in the stall).

I have a pillow case from 1978 I had drying on the cloths line, it still smells.

Good luck.

You are lucky that he just smells bad. Our lab almost died after being sprayed by a skunk a few months back. I ended up with $1000 worth of vet bills nursing her back to health. Thought she was a goner a couple of times. The skunk spray went down her throat and shut down her system. She couldn't drink or eat for several days so she had to be hooked up to an IV. Not a fun time. Especially since she stunk really, really bad. I ended up throwing away a bunch of clothes and bedding material that she touched while recovering.

My dog got skunked a few years ago. We washed her with tomato juice, and it worked. It did take a couple times of washing her though.

Your dog has taught us a very good lesson in life," just because it's a bad idea doesn't mean it won't be fun"! boogie

Re: Dog got skunked! - 01/30/20 11:21 AM

Opening weekend of dove season my chocolate lab spotted a skunk in the middle of the field just before dawn...very obedient dog...normally...dog took off like he was shot out of a cannon in spite of my screaming like a banshee at him, he nailed the skunk, rolled it up like a ball, skunk got loose for a split second and sprayed him right in the face. Now he decides to come back to me...stinking...coughing...foaming at the mouth and rolling in the dirt. Well...much as described above I tried everything, skunk off, tomato juice, same remedy as described above...probably washed and/or treated him a dozen times over the following week, eventually the odor became less and less noticeable but in all honesty it was probably 2 or three weeks before it was completely gone...

As a kid, I have had a couple (maybe 3) experiences with skunks. The tomato juice is popular, but works no better than a good soap bath. As with the pillow case above, on clothes you might as well toss them and save your self some time.

At your point, time is the best cure. Best of luck!

Our Lab was skunked and we found a product called Skunk Away and it worked wonders. I think we got it at Petco..

The peroxide, backing soda and soap mix works excellent but you have to do it as soon as possible.

Days later you are pretty much stuck

My wife grew up in Mass. and apparently they have a bunch of skunks up there. See em dead on the road up there like we see opossums down here. Heard the story many times about her golden retriever getting sprayed at 11:00 one night and how the smell was so bad it had her neighbors walking outside to see what in the world was going on, lol.
They spent the next 3 hours washing him in the bath tub w/ tomato juice, sauce, anything tomato related they could find. It still took a while for it to completely wear off.

Fortunately for MY nose, I've been out of town since Sunday morning whistling Going home Sat. so will sniff around then laugh
We have a couple big cans of expired tomato juice, might be worth a shot since we're just going to throw them out anyway.

I remember seeing a young guy buy a pack of condoms and a bottle of wine at Dart Drug... and an elderly lady buying a half gallon of ice cream and two Fleet enemas.
Cashier didn't mind but I was certainly still thinking... work

Re: Dog got skunked! - 01/31/20 03:40 AM

About all tomato juice does is turn the dog pink and make it smell like a Bloody Mary that got sprayed by a skunk lol.

The peroxide mix is the only one that is really effective. The sooner the better. The peroxide breaks down the "perfume" chemically is my understanding and the soda absorbs the odor. The detergent wicks the mix into the fur. Dog fur is designed to keep the dog dry in the wet so you really have to work it in.

Re: Dog got skunked! - 02/02/20 08:33 PM

his morning I re-washed Max the Meathead with peroxide/baking soda/Dawn. A lot of the remaining stench was on his head, so I carefully applied it to his muzzle, ears, and head without getting it in his eyes. Then after rinsing, a shampoo. It smells a lot better around here, especially with the house opened up for the beautiful warm day (73F and sunny... not bad for midwinter!) Now we are washing all the things he's been lying on, which also stink... If he ever does this again he will become a permanently outdoor dog!

Having had this happen to our hairy friend, this seems to work best, followed by a Dawn wash and rinse good, very good.

Re: Dog got skunked! - 02/10/20 11:44 PM

Dog smells OK. But a skunk burrowed his way from behind the house into the crawl space (footer is way too shallow, thanks to the "builder" who hacked this place together).
I suspect a possum found the burrow and had a disagreement with the skunk, because around 6 am today, the stench suddenly returned, stronger than ever.
Sigh.

The crawl space is so low that I can't get in it (and don't want to, in case I come face-to-face, or worse yet, face-to-butt, with a skunk!)
And it's impossible to completely block off from the half-basement due to the hack work where the ducts come through.

This article looks promising. https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Move-a-Skunk-Out-From-Under-Your-House/
My ex also trapped and relocated a skunk, and the mothballs kept it from coming back. Going to buy a box tomorrow!
I may leave the basement hatch open, and block the burrow with rocks, so they'll exit via the basement.

Right now I have the basement exhaust fan running (although I can't run the heat with a vacuum in the basement...)
The joys of country home ownership wink

Get a live trap and set it near where skunk is getting in. Bait with cat food. When you get the culprit throw an old blanket or other thick fabric item completely over the trap. Put in bed of truck, drive several miles away and release. When home set trap repeatedly to rid any other tenants. block hole with fencepost concrete bag mix.

Re: Dog got skunked! - 02/11/20 08:02 PM

My brother in law was having trouble with skunks destroying his lawn. So one morning he spots a skunk in the yard as he is leaving for work. Chases it through the yard with his Chevy Avalanche and...you guessed it: the skunk sprayed the truck at point blank. He worked in a small office building and had to park down the street and even after much power washing it was a couple weeks before he could park in his garage. Oh, and he couldn't turn on the climate control either.
Oops.

The funny thing about that is the skunk was actually doing him a favor. What it was doing was digging up some kind of grub that eats grass roots and kills patches of grass. Everybody thinks it's the skunk rooting up the lawn that causes those dead patches when it's actually the skunk's dinner that does the damage.

That's my plan, except I am using cheap packaged honey buns. Apparently (from 2 reliable sources, one of who is an exterminator) skunks love those more than cat food or peanut butter. Haven't tried the moth balls yet.
Trap is out back, and I also set up a game cam watching the opening. Nothing in the trap this morning, and it's going to rain all day so Pepe Le Pew is probably dry and asleep and I don't feel like going out in the rain to get the memory card. But I'll sort him all right.

Re: Dog got skunked! - 02/15/20 03:16 PM

Got a good pic of the critter with the game cam. I'm not sure if it's a big rat or a possum, but it was tough enough to win a fight with a skunk even after getting hosed!
If it's a possum I'll leave it be, since they eat huge numbers of ticks and other pests.
But I do not need a rat condo in my crawl space.
What do you think it is?

That’s a rat. Definately NOT a opossum!!! opossums have long pointed snouts. Great pic BTW!
