It's OK. They are selling recreational MJ now with a 35% tax. That will fix everything.

Buddy of mine says to me yesterday "I hear they are selling recreational MJ across the river now. I guess that's what you do when you are broke and desperate--you sell drugs.."

Don't know about up there but down here the contractors are overwhelmed with the projects the state is doing this year. Lots of people will be employed fixing roads and buildings that haven't been touched in years and new projects too.

Road projects ? ... whatever happed to all that TRILLION DOLLAR stimulus that was spent years ago? And the Congress has proposed another TRILLION DOLLARS !!

Have any of you paid attention to MANY of those road projects ? Repairs or new construction?

An absolute boondoggle

We have one of the highest income and sales taxes in the country.
We had great guys and gals in an office that understood that more money in the hands of regular guys gets spent and make the economy better.
Over Taxing slows spending down.

This thought seems to be lost on them now.
All we can do is get them out. They are on both sides of the party's so don't start the political. They all think the Regular Guy should pay. And If you overtax businesses it trickles down to customers.
Looks like they took a page from the EPA's handbook
I am glad I paid the $75 or was it $100 for the lifetime when I did

Just took a photo of that page, and texted it to my brother. He has a small car hauler in Illinois, and a boat with trailer. That's a couple of hundred dollars he won't get to spend as he wants.

It's my home state. I'd love to move back, but can't even consider it with the taxes, and constantly looming financial collapse.

They definitely need the infrastructure work. The only decent road I know of in IL is 145 out of Metropolis toward Harrisburg. They've repaved part of it, how far I don't know.

The pot tax won't help, it'll only line someone's pocket for a large part. Didn't they just double the fuel taxes this past summer? From what I understand the taxes on alcohol and tobacco are outrageous too, along with property taxes. I live near a border town that has a station located at the foot of the border bridge that is always full of cars with IL plates buying gas, smokes and beer. I'm sure that there other border towns that are enjoying the business IL's taxes bring them.

A friend of mine and I shoot every Wednesday night at a club there (I won't even touch those laws) and one of the locals we shoot with told us there were something like 350 IL residents moving out of state every day. True or not I don't know, I could see people trying to escape the communism though.

The Marijuana dispensary here in town had to stop selling to recreational users and only sell medical due to low supply and staff having to work 15 hour days. People waiting outside in the cold for hours trying to get in.

I'm just across the river in St. Louis, and I love the deal I got from Missouri on my boat trailer renewal. Went in 2 years ago to renew. It's cheap, about 25.00 every 2 years. Well, they asked me if I wanted to get a permanent registration for 50.00. That was a no-brainer, sign me up... up I now have a license tab with a "P" on the plate, and I don't ever have to renew it.

Re: More insanity in Illinoise... - 01/24/20 09:04 PM

I have ideas that there may be some lobbying involved. Rental companies, moving, hauling companies all could benefit from having less privately owned trailers kicking around.
Re road taxes. Unfortunately the big tax generators (States like CA and NY), and individuals with assets (homes, cars, trailers, etc.) are easy to levy fees that go into a fund to be disbursed by legislature. Fortunately only general funds can be spent wantonly. Fees generated by gas tax and license fees are earmarked by legislature for specific things. BUT, the govt has found a way to creatively ply "and other related uses" written into most laws. Therefore Busses, Trains, Parking lots, trails, bike lanes, landscaping etc sap $ that should be maintaining streets. I've very nearly time the populace of the u.s. do as our forefathers and lobby for users of facilities to be charged an appropriate fee to offset the operating cost. And, no more. Subsidies need to end. Too many of the working/middle class are expected to shoulder most og the countrys needs while welling populations at either end of the economic spectrum pay little or no to enjoy their lifestyles.

Its a crazy ugly cycle, sorta like the jock itch I couldnt get ride of in high school for like 3 months during one summer.

No disrespect meant to anyone living there, but who would really want to move to Chicago unless work related and had to? Yes ive spent time there and had a sis in law work there and fly home every weekend, ya dont see vacation ads to Chicago anyplace do we? Ok to visit though.

Re: More insanity in Illinoise... - 01/24/20 10:09 PM

I've seen reports in recent times of record numbers of tourists to Chicago. Myself, I live in the nearby suburbs and at this point in my life have no desire to venture across the city border. If the car jackers and smash and grab phone stealers don't get you, the city will, with red light cameras and speed cameras all over. And big sales taxes on restaurants. I can live without! Not sure why anyone would want to vacation here....
I could really use a car trailer, but don't have any room to park it on my property, and given our stagnant or falling house values here, along with every rising property taxes, I will not be "investing" in a larger place in this state. So they won't be getting any big trailer plate fees from me at least.
I am trying to figure out how to move from this dying state, but don't worry about me dragging this states garbage politics with me to my new home. I'm proud that I can honestly say that in several elections in recent times, not a single candidate I voted for won! penguin

Those whining about high license plate fees in IL haven't seen anything yet! Last I heard, there were over 400 new or increased fees that took effect on Jan 1st, most of which we probably haven't even heard about yet. There is suppose to be another 500 new or higher fees scheduled to take effect on July 1st. The clowns in charge now are just getting rolling, they have been taking classes from the leaders in CA and have a fresh new bag of stuff to dump on it us poor unsuspecting fools that are stuck living here.

No need to worry about moving, this new fee structure epidemic will spread across the entire country sooner or later, one only has to look at the federal government for a vision of the future. No one will be able to get around it. Gene

Again ... all this is done to feather their own beds ! A regular police officer or firefighters can retire with a 70/80k pension(for the rest of their life) after putting in 20. Does your job provide that ? Making fiberglass hoods and bumpers sure didn’t do that for me !!

See, there is the problem with oppressive Governments. They stick it to people so bad, the people find ways around the fees and the Government ends up going backwards, financially. They know this going in but are too arrogant to admit it. They act as if the public is just going to keep taking the abuse.

Will the underfunded pension funds in IL and KY ever be brought up to workable levels?

I doubt it.
Taxes are going to go up at least 30% or some kind of default will eventually occur.

CA and CT are also really bad on pensions and general debt but (Presently) have much richer residents, but residents can leave states.

Can a state do different?

Read about SD being almost debt free.

From 1865 to 1898 KY was run so badly that in 1898 a new constitution was written that prohibited any state debt being taken on for more than one year. Starting in 1950s this was just ignored.

Re: More insanity in Illinoise... - 01/25/20 02:16 PM

"CHICAGO — Illinoisans are on the hook for nearly $250 billion in unfunded public pension liabilities — more than $18,000 per resident — according to a credit rating agency. That's the latest estimate from Moody's Investors Service, which on Tuesday put Illinois' unfunded pension debt at $240 billion. Sep 19, 2019"

$18,000 per resident! And that includes both income tax paying AND non-income tax paying residents. Which means the debt for those that will actually pay for this mess is much higher. But the reality is that there is no way that the bulk of that money will ever be able to be collected. I mean, come on, who on earth believes that Illinois residents will be able to pay an additional $18,000+ each in taxes the next few years. It is just not going to happen. And the consequences will be catastrophic, particularly for the pensioners.

And it is particularly mind boggling that the vast majority of the new taxes are being spent in new ways. They are not going towards the debt already accumulated.

And for those interested in this kind of thing, check this out:

As I did my due dillegance for what states to move to I found that there are four states who are the best at using taxes and have no or little unfunded liability, and those are in this order; South Dakota, Nebraska, Florida, and Tennessee. Since I have no reason to move further into the cold abyss I am left with Florida and Tennessee. I go to Florida a lot, no way I could live there, so that leaves Tennessee. 250B in unfunded in IL ? I heard somewhere that it’s over TRIPLE THAT in the Golden State !

Re: More insanity in Illinoise... - 01/25/20 03:37 PM

I have a few friends who’ve moved to TN in recent years. Sounds attractive there but isn’t booze expensive/liquor only at government stores?
Just an example of how a state digs itself into an impossible hole. An old friend of mines dad was a high school teacher. My friend was telling me recently that his dad, who is now around 90 years old, has been collecting a pension for more years than years he taught. And with his government pensions annual cost of living increases, his dad’s annual pension payments are far more than his income when he was working ever were.
To add insult to injury, the pensions are based on the average of the last 3 years income, and a game the school districts like to do, is give teachers approaching retirement really big raises their final years to boost their impending pension payments. How nice of them, just send the bill to the taxpayers.
And after it started becoming very apparent this pension burden isn’t going to be sustainable, the legislators shrugged their shoulders and said the state constitution guarantees that promised state pension payments can never be decreased, so there is nothing they can do. I guess they better start building mints and printing currency, because printing money is the only way they are going to be able to get enough money to meet their state constitution required obligations!
I look forward to sitting on my front porch in another state watching the state collapse from a comfortable distance!

All they would need to do it eliminate the bloated salaries, waste, and scamming and the infrastructure could be rebuilt 100 times over. With careful and prudent budgeting, tax revenue from decades and decades ago (percentages) were designed to maintain and eventually replace.

You can get Maine plates legally - much much cheaper. Been using them for years- 5 years for $96 dollars- even transferable- Have to pay a one time $20 fee for MVA power of attorney I think.

The only reason there are two parties is one side can't steal all the money. The only difference is who they pay a little back to. As long as people have no problem with who they vote for spending like crazy and complain the other side is doing the same thing. Nothing will change. The whole time you're pointing fingers at each other they're both stealing us blind. No different that baseball NL or AL they play for whoever is paying them and have no trouble changing teams for more money. And just like baseball if they're on your team you love them and if they aren't or leave you hate em.

When they're in session here and out it the bars without a name tag or microphone in front of them you don't know who's who. Most are best friends in private. They trade votes across the isle so they can get up and look important when it involves their district and then return the favor. All they care about is getting reelected.

The last federal tax bill that was passed accelerated this. Previously there was no limit to the deductions residents of high tax states could make on their federal taxes from their local tax payments. The new rules put a maximum of $10k.

Our wonderful public servants - BOTH PARTIES- are looking at spending another ONE TRILLION on infrastructure... to add to the 120T unfunded....

If you put 100$ bills END TO END .... how long would that line be to total ONE TRILLION DOLLARS?
Posted By: larrymopar360

Re: More insanity in Illinoise... - 01/26/20 06:55 PM

Yes, it's disgusting. Both parties are supposed to be taking our taxes dollars, spending some AND saving some for future needs, just like we are supposed to do for our personal needs. NOT put a referendum on the ballot to increase sales tax every time a new building is needed, or to raise fees, etc. Anyone who has ever been an actual worker at any level of government knows that there is so much waste and fraud that it's enough to turn you off of the so-called public sector for life.

I mostly agree it's both parties, but at the risk of breaking a rule, one party's platform IS to spend more, so that certainly doesn't help. BOTH parties want to line their own pockets FIRST, with VERY few exceptions. The answer is never to cut costs, it's always to raise revenue.

They have booze at independent stores in TN. Beer is a lot more expensive than in Michigan, its about $20 for a 24 pack of a lot of name brands where you could get a 30 of the same beer for $16 in MI anyway.

My parents live in Sumner county (northeast of Nashville) and huge amounts of people have moved in since they moved there in 2009. Housing values are actually starting to get kinda stupid there, when my parents moved there it was really affordable. It's not a bad place but there's going to be an infrastructure bomb because it's way too full at this point. They are also seemingly terrible at planning road networks, building and maintaining them. The roads look more like Michigan every year.

We tried going to the grocery store on a Saturday, there had to be 600 people in Kroger, barely a parking spot available.

Since I have been looking at property for the last two years in the Portland, TN area north of Nashville the prices have gone up about 20%! Like normal, I missed the window. But moving near the Kentucky line I can always go to Franklin, KY for beer... biggrin

When everyone moves to TN, or wherever they think things are better, they soon find the road and public water and sewer and every other public infrastructure is too small, and too outdated to accommodate all the new habitants and the current federal requirements, so they will be forced to bring everything up to standards they probably haven't been meeting for the last 20 years, let alone the modern government improved standards. Once you get the government involved with public improvements, everything gets costly. The states don't have the money required to meet the new needs, so guess how they have to pay to cover those needs? Yep, they borrow based on future estimated state income levels, and the only way they can do that is to somehow show the state population is increasing, or there will be an increase in the state taxes and fees.

Lets use the town I live in. We have had a public water utility for well over 100 years. When the system was originally designed, it was expected to support a city of around 5,000-6,000 people. Provisions were built into the project to continue the system upkeep.
Somewhere around 1950, the city exceeded the 6,000 population, but there was money in the fund to add the needed capacity, so no fees were increased. Everyone was happy. Somewhere around the early 70s the population exceeded 25,000, so the system was upgraded again, but this time they floated a bond to pay for the improvements, and make a few repairs to the original system. By this time, the built in system up keep funds were pretty well gone, but it was OK because we now had a bond to perform some upkeep, and to fund the enlarged capacity. The bond hurt a little, but it had an expiration date, so it wasn't too bad.
Somewhere around 2000 the original system was beginning to fail. It had actually exceeded the original life expectancy, but there were no funds available to repair the system. Another bond, but this one was to replace some of the oldest parts of the original system. They saved a fortune by replacing the part they did with material with a 50 year life expectancy instead of the 100 year life expectancy like the original stuff was.
Somewhere around 2010, the fed came in and determined the water & sewer system was not up to the new and improved standards laid out be the fed gov. A large portion of the system needed to be replaced immediately. Of course there are no funds to do such a thing, so those in power were forced to get another bond to pay for the ned fed required system. They also thought they should add a fund to provide future system replacements. Then to add insult, the decided to add another fee to cover the cost of repair for the now 20 year old system installed in 2000. The average water bill in our town went from around $25/month to a minimum of $75 a month. The cost of the new fed enforced system was in the millions, and its all on a bond based on future population expectations, but the problem is, they expected the population to grow, but it is shrinking at an alarming rate. They are likely going to have to ask for another bond to pay additional interest on the current bond, because there isn't enough "extra" money in the city budget to cover the shortcoming on the original bond issue.

The circle goes around and around. runaway Gene

Properties I am looking at are not near a city, I will never live in a city again! Sure I will have well and septic issues, but they will be on me to fix, not the politicians! I will miss the awesome water we have here, I have never needed a water softener it is that good. But I want to move away from people and only see them when I want...

I forgot to mention the water bill in Chicago. (Lead infested, over chlorinated city water).

In 1996 it was $180 a year

In 2019 it was $1210 for the year.

And the Mayor and Governor are wondering why Illinois is losing residents at a record rate?

Your mayor and gov better GET IT TOGETHER.....

Florida is having NINE HUNDRED PEOPLE per day moving here !

And I believe that Texas and Arizona are gaining residents by about the same rates

Retirees have been moving there for years which was fine. Then the kids started moving their family's down to be close to Mom & Dad and that started to overwhelm the schools and roads.

Similar to the small towns here in Illinois who wanted the new prisons for the jobs they would bring while not thinking about their family who were on welfare moving there with the inmate.

If the people moving from blue states to places like Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Arizona, are moving for the right reasons, that's all good. The problem is, most often they bring the same stupid mentality that ruined the place they moved from. (RIP Virginia)

Here's a memo - if you are coming to Pennsylvania to leave the NY, NJ, MD insanity behind and enjoy freedom, fine. If not, then just stay out. Having Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are bad enough.

The metropolitan areas of this country will be it's undoing. Here in Illinois, 90% of the land area is red. Only small areas in and around shitcago and the St. Louis metro east area are blue. But those areas have a lot of votes, money, and power. They use that to run over the rest of the state. In a side irony, 52% of Illinois residents identify as conservative. But the Democrats that have had control of the state for 25 years, have gerimandered themselves into power despite being a minority. Downstaters despise shitcago and feel it (or us) should be the 51st state of the union. They seem to have a need to inflict their socialist ideals on the rest of us. realmad
