Poll for Paypal users. Which method are you using?

Poll for Paypal users. Which method are you using? - 01/20/20 06:04 PM

Seen a lot of posts on message boards about people getting scammed, sometimes for thousands, by using the Friends and Family payment option. I finally started insisting on using Goods and Services just to have a record that it is a sale and not a gift. But I see a lot of people still asking for payment by Friends and Family. Curious where the rest of you currently stand.

GAS only. I will even add the fee if its something I need. If the seller insists on Friends and family I will move on.

Same here. Too many dishonest people in this world. That includes several people who are generally well regarded as being "good" people.

If its not asked for upfront and my gut tells me its ok, at times I F@F it in hopes my good faith gesture makes the seller feel good and maybe they will pack a hair better or ship a day sooner.

Ive recently learned even after 35 years of buying parts and as much as even the membership here seems very solid, ask ask ask questions, ask for pics, ask about shipping and dont assume nothing, and if thats a issue on there end just walk away. For example I just paid 2x the going shipping rate that many would of went the 3-5 day shipping with ins vs usps ground freight with no ins and over two weeks to me. But thats my fault at the end of the day. However I got lucky and received the part.

Im actually skiddish about sending a m/o these days as the recourse route is long and bumpy.

If someone doesn't want to eat the 3%, just pay it yourself. I look at it as insurance. I do that all the time. If they don't want to accept payment with me paying that "insurance" for myself, I RUN!!!!

Only thing I care about is what hits my pocket. If you don't want the item because of the 3%, move on.

I've been scammed exactly 3 times since I've been in this hobby. 3 times in the 34 years since I bought my first car. All 3 were Moparts members. One of them...the worst of the bunch...is one of those "stand up guy" guys, too. whistling

Plenty of great members here, of course. Far more than there are thieves and scumbags.

It depends. Selling, I tack on the 3% on the sale, or have them send F&F. If they don't want to do either, I'll wait for a postal money order. I've got a pretty good track record of NOT screwing people over, so sometimes word of mouth works. Buying, if I know them I will send F&F. If I don't, I send GAS, add the fee if they request it. I prefer to have that recourse in case I run across that guy that I misjudged. Luckily, most of the stuff I am looking for ends up coming from friends from here, or friends from Facebook, and I seldom have to go outside of my "circle" to find what I need.

I use my USAA credit card to pay PP, so it really doesn't matter to me. If someone rips me and PP washes their hands USAA takes care of PP for me.

But the only time I use PP is if a seller will only take PP and nothing else. In which case I just pay what's asked. I think I bought three things off Ebay in the last 12 months so no big issue for me. I'll be honest, I didn't know there were two ways to pay on PP.

I refuse to screw a company doing me a service for 3%. I’ll pay the 3% if I have to if the seller or buyer is that cheap

I'm rarely a buyer these days, but nearly everything I have sold lately has been paid through Pay Pal. I don't care whether the buyer uses GAS or FAF. If I have to pay the 3%, so be it.

Never had an issue using F&F and I do it A LOT! I always have buyer send it to me F&F and have never had a problem. If there is an issue with a part or service I always make it right... shruggy

I play it straight up. If it is for goods and services then that is what I click. If it is money for a friend or buddy then that is what I check.

When I sell parts on here I expect people to click goods and services. Some people who I know or I've sold parts to in the past send the money as friend. I'm fine with that but I'd never tell someone to do that. If I'm selling products then I expect to pay the man his toll.

Exact same thing happened to me. I cannot believe the bs run around I was given. I never expected it from a member here. Live and learn...

i always ask what preferred method of payment is expected.
many ask for a US postal order. believe it or not, some say a personal check is ok.
under no circumstances will i do "gift cards" ! when that happens, i RUN ! panic
and i'll use GAS to go get stuff if it's too big and somewhat close. biggrin

I don't mind a fee if it's required by the other party. On the other hand I have never had a problem with F&F either.....

I use GAS. I can't believe how many people quibble and cry over 3 percent. On 1000 bucks it's 30 whole dollars.

I always get a kick out of how guys hate thieves but yet it’s ok for them to steal from a business. Hmmmm

Re: Poll for Paypal users. Which method are you using? - 01/21/20 04:18 PM

if i'm selling i tell the buyer to add the paypal fee...

if i'm buying i always add the paypal fee even if the seller says F&F is ok. the small amount is well worth the protection to me..

i can't be bothered with any other payment methods unless in person with cash. quite a few times when a seller wouldn't take paypal and only wanted a money order i passed on the part. too much crap having to go get a money order, send the monety order, wait till the money order gets delivered then for the seller to ship.. paypal is instant and my parts are in the mail usually the next day..:)

i usually use this calculator to quickly figure out the fee.. https://thefeecalculator.com/

I've more than once ..
had people claim they never got something want money returned or another sticker or t-shirt when I know they got them .. so, I want the transaction final when it leaves my hands .. plus, I price my stuff cheap enough , not going to
lose another 3% ..

Had one clown, insist I send them 3 times, each time he said he never got them .. paypal still took my money back .. I've had good luck with most people , few rotten apples

I think the FAF option will eventually go away due to people abusing it. And yes I agree with several others that 3 or 3.5 % is a small price to pay for the insurance it provides to the the buyer. twocents

Like any "internet" purchase, I wouldn't buy anything truly expensive...involving any amount I couldn't afford to lose.

I've always used FAF with people I know to one degree or another. twocents

I'm OK either way, or at least I have been. Lately I've had people send money FF and put stupid comments in about stuff they bought like it's suppose to protect them. What part of "No Comment" is not understandable. ESPECIALLY if it's an item that is verboten for PP.

I don't think people realize that PP is anti 2A. If the item is inexpensive I usually send it FF.
