Moving Safe & BIG Tool Box ? ? ?

Hello All ........

In next month or so I will need to be moving a 1000 Lb. "Safe" & LARGE triple bank Tool Box ........

Does anyone have a safe ? cost effective way to do this or have done for us ? ? ? I've researched

different ways / methods and am at an impasse ....... I can't do this myself ... They need to be sent

800 + miles away .........

ANY ideas warmly appreciated

If you have a trailer have local moving company at each end do the load and unload. I looked at this method when we moved and while it would run about $500 I think worth it. This, based on my experience allowing a friends brother convince us to save our money as he had everything to do it properly. We ended up with grooves in hardwood floors because of his (harbor freight) quality dollies did not swivel when making corners. The "heck I've done it before without masonite to protect floor" claim did nothing.
To have it done right let the pros handle it.
If you use the trailer method: Do not strap to outside walls. Rather run a stout chain through d rings bolted through floor and frame of trailer then bind with 3" straps over top to the chain using furniture corner protectors over safe and a upside down plywood box (size of top of tool box and 4" down side of box) over the top of tool box. DO empty safe and tool box.

When we moved the movers used a large refrigerator type dolly. A thick strap around the front and tilted it back on the extra set of wheels and away they went. The next time the wife and I moved it, I separated the sections.

when i worked at another new car dealership, the owner sold out to new owners he had a large safe to move down a somewhat long flights of stairs. the movers had a special appliance dolly the was powered. it had 2 sets of wheels, 1 set that moved up and down and was battery powered. 2 movers strapped the safe to the dolly and walked the safe down the stairs easy as eating pie. they just ran it onto a HD U-Haul trailer with steel sides and strapped it down and drove away.


when we moved from our old dealership to the new building the owners just called the towing co. they rolled and winched several fully loaded boxes on a flat bead, strapped them down and delivered them to the new shop.

rolling them on a flat bead, strapping them down and getting them delivered might be cheaper than renting a trailer and doing it yourself.

First, empty the safe. A friend of mine has a HUGE noise maker safe (he also lives across the street from BLM land so he can go make noise just about any time he wants to). It's in his garage, but not where it needs to be. We talked about the weight of the contents vs. the weight of the safe. He figures the contents are about 1/3 of the total. Neither one of us could get it to tip even a little fully loaded. He'll probably have to hire somebody to help him.

I would also recommend professionals to, at the very least, load and unload it.

My buddy owns a crane company, lucky me. It has come in handy more than once.

I would hire a mover. I use mayflower for large heavy equipment and have always been happy with the results and price. They are insured and have the manpower.

That's a job for a rigging company. If there are stairs involved and 1000 lbs gets away on you, gravity and physics could do a lot of damage and potentially kill someone.

^^^ I have a 50-Series Liberty safe, and this is how the company I bought it from moved it to my house and placed it exactly where I wanted it. I think I paid an extra $200 for them to deliver it, and it was easy money to part with. Find a sizable safe dealer near you and see what they'll charge you to load it on a truck. Of course you'll have to figure out the logistics of getting it unloaded on the other end...

I moved a smaller 600lb safe into my house. My safe is threaded on top so I installed an eyelet and lifted it with my tractor. Then cut some conduit to roll the safe into the house. Only have 1 step to enter the house so I just made a ramp out of scrap plywood. It was pretty easy.
I agree with everyone you need to hire movers for a safe that heavy.

When moving something heavy, consider a local tow truck company, they usually work cheaper than a mover. A tow truck used for commercial trucks will have a boom large enough to handle big items.

Of course, it's up to you to figure out how to sling it for the hook.
