When an electric car, can drive to the track make back to back to back passes, then drive to get a cheeseburger then home count me in the still dont want it category.

Hey, the car may have a future sponsor. The "Green New Deal"

The first street legal production car in the 8's will be electric or a gas/electric hybrid....like it or not.
The technology is leaving the traditional methods behind.

It's pretty awesome and I'd drive the snot out of it. Does it mean I'm ready to give up my fossil fueled vehicles? No, but I'm old so it won't matter to me anyway.

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 02/10/19 10:53 PM

This particular setup is nothing that hasn't already been done. As for any "street legal production car" capable of making it into the 8's. Already done. AMS Alpha 12 GT-R, 8.82 1/4 mile.

I'm thinking an electric vehicle would make an excellent bracket car. Think about it, the air isn't really going to affect it. There would be no gear changes to miss or converter slip to change the ET.

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 02/11/19 02:30 AM

Yeah. Lots of fun to flip a switch.

The fun of a car for me are all your senses being stimulated. The noise, smell, feel, sight and then the little nuances of a fuel powered whatever.

I'll save the electric motors for my leaf blowers.

This exactly! Get me near an SR71 Blackbird ready to take off then you got it! No electric anything does anything for me. I remember when my dad bought an electric lawn mower in the late 60's, I hated cutting grass after that even more... tsk

It can only make TWO full power passes, before the battery needs to be recharged, for TEN hours.

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 02/11/19 02:29 PM

I watched an eFSAE car go around an autocross and that was enough for me to be disinterested. Sure they are FAST , but all you hear are the tires begging for mercy.

No shifts, no rev-matched downshifts, no bouncing off the limiter when it breaks loose...boring!

The Tesla Model S P100D w/Ludicrous mode is around the same or a tick faster zero to 60 than the Demon, and probably a lot easier to get that number out of consistently.

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 02/11/19 03:13 PM

People already leave the stands in droves after the fuel cars run. Why? It's boring to most. If electric cars are the way of the future, you might as well shut down all race tracks, and play with slot cars.

Raceway Park closed because of noise, they could run electrics there. work

Admittedly, it is pretty boring from the outside laugh2

As for the inside, this guy was concerned about it too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhwl-Skxdzo

Towards the end he says that since all you hear is the wind and tires, all you feel and focus on is the speed.

(I went to college with the other guy in the video, who is making an electric Delorean right now).

But wouldn't it slow a bit each pass as the batteries lose charge?

There apparently is an affect, which doesn't affect a street driven car much, but I suppose could make a difference in a drag race. Assuming you can't recharge a bit between rounds.

Since seeing Hammonds wad up the electric supercar on Grand Tour I have to wonder if the Safety Safari will be equipped to put one out if it wrecks?

As far as cost, a regular COPO is $100K+ just to get started. By the time you get it competitive you're talking $140-150K.

Pretty sure with the e version you'd need multiple battery packs to swap out after each pass.

Bright side for anyone buying one of these is money will be no object anyway.

Yup, and they could also hold live stadium concerts where everyone brings earbuds and tunes into the station. The bands could play on a big screen and not even have to tour!

Funny, I thought they closed because the Knapp family (or whoever is running it now) figured out they could make more money parking VW diesels that failed emissions testing there. Didn't they turn the place into a gigantic parking lot for storing cars?

The Raceway park deal fell thru with Copart. I think the county or officials didn`t approve it.

And the cars are already on the property.

FWIW the NHRA permits electric Jr Dragsters to compete against the ICE cars. Not many out there yet, but there are a few.

The deal is with IAA.
And I’m SURE that with a multi-million dollar deal like this, the lawyers made certain, the township approved.

Silly but serious question; what would happen to the batteries if that sucker started barrel rolling at 134+ MPH? shruggy

That’s an aftermarket Nissan, not a stock production car.

It's more than watching...it's a full sensory experience for most of us. Without the smell of rubber and spent gasses, the roar....the vibrations you feel through the air and in the stands/on the ground....you're still a part of what's going on.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the smell of burning ozone...when I play with the AFX and Tyco cars... or for a real experience... the Eldons....but that's where electric cars are meant to be!

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 03/24/20 05:09 AM

I said the electric Harley Davidson would fail from the beginning and it did..................in my opinion so will the all electric muscle car eventually. All electric transportation is great for the masses but I never considered myself one of them and there are lots and lots of us here that will never, ever resign to being one of the boring, no life masses. Funny when the electric oven/stove came about they said it's the way of the future but the gas stoves are still around and there isn't a good cook or chef that will cook on an electric stove. And every year we pull out the charcoal or wood burning grill to enjoy some of the best tasting food not cooked on an electric stove or electric grill if there even is such a thing. Watch Formula E sometime.........BORING!!!!!!

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 03/24/20 12:14 PM

While I can admire and appreciate the performance from the electric stuff its just not for me.

There was a guy who did Drag Week 2019 in a Tesla. It was gutted on the inside and he used a drag radial on all four tires(drag week rules). It ran 10.40s and 10.50s all week and made the drives with no problem or range anxiety. 1320 Video talked to him several times, nice guy, and he shared lots of info about the car and his thoughts on it.

Drag week is probably the only venue where you will have a street car run a 5.99, a 10 second electric car, and a GM Minivan with two engines all at the same event lol.

Re: Are you impressed by this? eCOPO - 03/26/20 02:05 PM

So Chevy/GM realized they can't build a gas powered car to beat Dodge & Ford gas powered cars at a drag strip, so they built an electric one so they can still be competitive? I like the Camaro's look and options overall, but calling it a COPO with an electric drive? Nine seconds in the quarter mile is cool, but is that street trim or race weight? Wheelie bars, chute & wheels says not really a street car. I like it, but I would rather have a modded LS version.
