Mystery wires 70 Cuda - 08/08/11 05:41 AM

Just put in a new distributor and found these two wires tucked away going to nowhere. What is missing in this pic is the manual choke which I took out to replace...but these guys were there and laying up against the valve cover...both are hot when the key is on. Anyone know what they belong to? One green on black....thanks....

What motor is this? I'm looking at a '70 wiring diagram, I see a couple different situations with carb and distributor solenoids. The 383 in particular looks like it may have had two different wires, depending on carb. Could also be unused from cruise control?

is this the original harness to the car?

It is a 383, yes the harness is original to the car, the new distributor is the Mancini Racing set up converted from a Unilite to the orange box electronic ignition. These wires were not on the coil, which is a Delco Remy, that also came with the car, the carb is an AFB...doubt it came with the car, and it has a mechanical choke. If anyone wants more pics I can add them later...thanks!

The '70 wiring diagram shows connections for either a Holley or a Carter for the 383. It appears there is one black wire for the Carter, and possibly a different, alternate wire for the Holley. It's not possible to tell from the diagram what this would physically look like. One test would be with the ignition off to check for continuity between the two connectors. If there is continuity, my best guess would be that they were both carb wires, don't know exactly what for. I'm not familiar with '70 383s, but on my '69 440/350 it had a mechanical choke. If this is what they are, it appears they would originate on a connector for some sort of solenoid on the distributor. The fact that you're getting voltage to them with the ignition on leads me to believe this solenoid might still be hooked up?

I had one friend suggest that because this is a Ca. car that it might have something to do with the ECS set up for emissions at idle on this car....am going to test for continuity as you suggest....thanks much for the replies.....

One wire is for the idle solenoid which mounted to the side of the carb... The other is for the timing retard which mounted to the vacuum advance.. Picture of timing retard unit attached..
