I know what this is all about...I've seen the repop piece that looks more like foam than the tar type material originally used... I'm contemplating the same question for a project I'm working on now....I was thinking about using the thickest roofing felt paper I could find...That's seems to be an asphalt/tar type material...

Keep in mind that the gas tank sweats. The water produced is trapped between the insulator and the tank. You need something that will absorb the water and keep the tank dry. I don't think the reproduction pads will do this.

Hear is a comparison picture of the original tank pad material and felt roofing paper. They are about the same thickness.

The original has grooves and the felt doesn't. The grooves could be there to help channel the water build up away from the tank and allow ventilation to help prevent rusting.

I used the thickess felt roofing paper that Home Depot had and it was almost an exact match to the original. That aftermarket foam tank insulator pad is a joke.

I use strips of conveyor belt material, about 1/8" to 1/4" thick, just where the floor braces are. Don't like the idea of the matt that holds moisture. Just my $0.02.

I've been going down to the local ACE Hardware & buying the Rubber "Runner mat". Black rubber with ribs on one side. @ 2 ft wide & I get it as long as needed. Use the old mat as a template & cut it to fit.

Like everybody else has said I figure the ribs would help with condensation.
