Paint removal on plastic bezels

Paint removal on plastic bezels - 05/21/11 05:48 PM

Hello-
I'm looking to see if there is a good way to strip paint off a plastic gauge cluster bezel. Is there a chemical stripper that is safe for plastic?

This 62 Plymouth bezel has some intricate & delicate patterns in it that make removal by scotch brite not possible. It's been painted a few times and the detail is starting to get lost.

Thanks!!

Test EZ-off oven cleaner on a small area on the back to make sure it doesn't harm the plastic. If not then give it a go. However, if it gets anywhere near "chromed" plastic, that will be ruined.

Brake fluid or lacquer thinner?

On my '63 Dodge I used Easy Off on the cluster (after I took the clear lenses off) and worked it into the tight areas with a toothbrush.

Worked awesome!

Thanks for the info.

How long did you let the easy off sit? Did it remove the chrome plating? Is there a certain variety of the cleaner that works best, I think there are a few like non-amonia etc.

I've got an extra peice to test on too.

Use the heavy duty, not the fume free.

Yes, the chrome plating will come off!

If there isn't much of it, you can always use Bare Metal Foil to replicate it if you're on a budget.

I don't recall how long it took but the hotter it is outside, the better!
