Hardtop, coupe, post, post coupe, sedan - 68-70 B's - 01/19/11 09:20 PM

68-70 Coronets and 68-70 Plymouths.....

There are Coupes. These are hardtops correct? No window frames or posts and rollup rear windows.

There are Post Coupes. No frames around door windows. Post btween frt and rear. Rears are ALWAYS pop outs? Or do some Post Coupes have roll up rear windows?

Are there any 2 door models with frames around the door windows or is that JUST on 4drs? I've always known cars with door window frames to be called "sedans".

WHEW!

Oh, and Chargers (66-70) are always hardtops with roll up rear windows. Correct?

Re: Hardtop, coupe, post, post coupe, sedan - 68-70 B's - 01/19/11 09:27 PM

All 68-70 B body two doors have no window frame on the doors...

All Coupes (post cars, third & forth digits of VIN 21) have pop out rear windows

All Hardtops (No post third & forth digits of VIN 23) have roll down rear windows

All 68- 70 Chargers (third & forth digits of VIN 29) have roll down rear windows

And as Alan pointed out Sedans have window frames & four doors (third & forth digits of VIN 41)

No ..there's coupes and hardtops and sedans

Coupes have fixed, pop-out 1/4 windows and no door window frames

Hardtops have roll down 1/4 windows and no door window frames

Sedans (usually 4drs) have window frames and roll down glass.

Re: Hardtop, coupe, post, post coupe, sedan - 68-70 B's - 01/19/11 09:34 PM

From Year One's 68-74 VIN Decoder page..

21 = 2-door sedan
23 = 2-door coupe
27 = 2-door convertible
29 = 2-door Sports coupe (whats this?)

So coupe is hardtop.

Sports coupe may be "post coupe" meaning post and pop out rear windows.

And there WERE 2dr "sedans"

Metro Molded Products list the following weatherstrip....

RKB 4005-102, Basic Kit, for 2-Door Post Coupe (with swing-out windows). The door only part of this kit is listed as an LM23? Wonder if that referes to the 23 VIN code?

If I do a search I see plent of "post coupes". Thier pictures show a hardtop with a post in frt of a pop out rear window. Is that a POST COUPE?

29 = sports roof - such as but not limited to Barracuda fast back, Duster, Dart Sport, Demon, Charger 500/Daytona, Challenger SE, ...

No, they are two different body types. 23 code hardtops have roll down rear windows. There is no B-pillar post so when the front & rear windows are rolled down the entire side window are is completely "open".
21 code Coupes have a fixed B-pillar and the rear windows only pop-out.

Not really, see the above two quick explanations.
Coupes are commonly called "posts" because of their fixed B-pillar.
Sports roof can also, but they are there own unique breed.

Not in the 1968-70 B-bodies, A-bodies yes.

Re: Hardtop, coupe, post, post coupe, sedan - 68-70 B's - 01/19/11 09:40 PM

The whole word game is a PITA

29 indicates something has been altered in the roof to normal body style it can be a Charger or it can be a Challenger SE, probably also brought about in the Sports Fury with the bubble rear glass....

As Daniel pointed out I missed all the A bodies....

No two door B body Sedans 68-70, 66-67 I believe there were & C bodies were done that way...

I KNOW!

So what are the cars without door window frames, with a post and pop out rear windows called? Post Coupes?

And were ther cars without door window frames, WITH a post but rull up rear windows? (I'm thinking NOT).

Thanks for all the good info as usual!

Great info Daniel!

Can you answer "were ther cars without door window frames, WITH a post but rull up rear windows? (I'm thinking NOT)."

We can debate this forever.
The definitive answer is:
If you can lower front and rear windows and there is no post at the window line, it is a hardtop. Period. All others are coupes, sedans, etc....

Re: Hardtop, coupe, post, post coupe, sedan - 68-70 B's - 01/20/11 12:59 AM

Somehow, somewhere people started referring to hardtops as coupes. Maybe because hardtops are not sedans? (more on this in a bit) This opened the door for the 'post coupe' term. Needed to have someway to discern between coupe (actually a hardtop) and a post coupe.

A hardtop does not have a 'B' pillar between the door glass and quarter glass and as stated previously, all side glass (less vent wing) roll down. Body designation 23. Sometimes referred to as a coupe (like the YO info) but that is wrong. No offense to anyone that doesn't know any different.

A coupe has the same roofline as a hardtop with the addition of the 'B' pillar between the door glass and the pop out quarter glass. Body code 21. (for 68-70. pre 1968, 21 is a sedan.) Also called 'post coupe'. To alleviate confusion, the term post coupe is a redundancy.

A sedan has the frames around the windows, a 'B' pillar and a different roofline than a coupe/hardtop. Compare the roofline from a 68-70 sat/belv. 4 door vs. a roadrunner or gtx.

Hope this helps.

Coupe' = "cut" in french. Back then they would 'cut' down the formal 4 door car (or even way back to carriages) into a sporty 2 door or coupe.

Hmmm, that doesn't help at all

So it does help..the only offical coupe (cpe) is the 27 convertible (cut off roof). I assume these were built as convertibles from scratch as opposed to fox mustangs where they really cut off the roof

Very interesting post. I have always refered to Charger as "29" and I think the parts book calls them Fastback. Also, I recently was looking at a 74 Road Runner. I checked the VIN and it was RM21G4G. When I looked at the car it had no post? I am pretty sure the rear windows were not stationary. Was this a misprint on the VIN tag? Shouldn't it have been a 23 or did Chrysler change something on the later B Body's?

There are coupe '74 Road Runners, they are just like the hardtop but the rear windows don't roll down. These started appearing in 1970 in Challengers and Barracudas, they called them Coupes.

There are many definitions and many disagreements. Heck, many carmakers are selling 4-door coupes now and that technically isn't incorrect. And don't even start will Pillared and Colonade Hardtop Coupes...

BTW, the first hardtop two-doors that Chrysler sold were called "Hardtop Convertibles". They had the convertible body but with a steel roof welded on. I had a 1950 Windsor Newport version.

If you want to know the actual name for a bodystyle, rather than what marketing determined them to be, this is how it works:

Coupe - a two door vehicle with a sleek roofline. Hence, a '68 Road Runner with a B-pillar is a coupe. A hardtop, a coupe without a B-pillar, would look the same.

Hardtop - see above.

Sedan - a vehicle with a boxier roofline and a B-pillar. Can be a 2-door or a 4-door. A '67 Belvedere I post coupe is really a 2-door sedan. There are also hardtops in this style, such as the 4-door hardtop sedan that first came out in 1956 with some GM models; when it comes to Mopars in the muscle car era, only C-bodies had 4-door hardtop sedans.

Still confused?

Not sure what you count as the muscle car era but there were 4-door hardtop b-bodies.

The OP was asking about 68-70 B-bodies, and I would have to say there are no 43 style (4-dr htp) made.
41 style, 4dr sedans, yes.
