Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger

Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 12/17/10 05:06 PM

Here's pics of two different gas caps.
Both are listed at eBay and sellers are stating that their cap will fit to a '70 Challenger under the flip top gas cap.

What do you experts say about these, they are not similar so I assume only the other one will fit to 70 Challenger, but which one?

I know that the original locking gas cap is mfg'ed by B&S and it's totally different than these two ones, but they are sooo rare.
I have one such, but two cars

Pressure-Vacuum is for a 71 and 70 California cars (N95).....Is your 70 an N95?

Also - Are they cheap? Wrong is wrong at anything but a screaming price.

What type of aftermarket gas caps are currently available that would fit under the flip top gas cap?

Anyone knowing if Stant is offering a suitable cap?

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 05/26/11 12:35 AM

Can't tell by looking at your pictures which is which, as far as fit. Like FJ5 Fish said there not right for a E body, why pay big bucks, if they cost a lot?

I believe these are the 2 filler necks for challengers. The one on the left is for a 71 with N95 and like FJ5 Fish said for 70 N95 cars.
Look at yours and see which one you have. The one on the right is used in 1970 without N95 72 73 74.

Then these two after markets fit challengers filler necks and also I beleive some 68 B bodys too?
The one on the right is for the filler necks on the left in the above picture.
See the difference in the distance between the locking tags and the rubber gasket? That's what you have to lookout for.
These caps can be had from Car Quest and other parts places for around 15 bucks , so be warned. Don't have to pay huge prices for a correct funtioning but wrong cap.

This is what they look like installed.

Here's a original one.

Seems like this might be a good post to put in the best of moparts for the part# I posted?

Challenger 1,

many thanks for your efforts. Attached are some pics from my nonlocking gas cap and my filler neck. Can you confirm, that the "car quest locking fuel cap 35037" or the equally Stant Part 10571 will fit?

Many thanks in advance.

This is the other style of mechanism for the Challenger locking gas cap.

Both appear the same from the side with the lock.

This cap may still be available, I don't know if the vendor sold it

Yep thats an original. Interesting that the price is $575, I met a guy at a Kirkland car show how payed $600 for one. Damn those are expensive!!!

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/04/13 06:05 PM

I have of those original locking caps. I don't use them because the gaskets are cracked and because I drive my cars. More than once have I found my flip lid open and my aftermarket cap locked on my filler neck. I bet folks are looking for those hi dollar locking caps and I'm not going to let them steal it from me.

I bought mine around 2003 and I know I didn't pay 600 bucks for them.

Yeah, original or not, sometimes it makes no sense to pay the price. I just want to have it locked and for a couple bucks, that would be fine.

Challenger 1, can you confirm that the "35037" will fit on mine? Then I will get it for sure, but the 70 Challengers are not listed on Stants side (see above). And I cannot simply drive to the next store and try

And at the end of a day I'm not sure if the filler tube is stock or not, that's why I've attached the pictures.

TIA

By looking at your old cap...

Yes the 35037 will fit your filler neck.

I can't see you filler neck to be 100% SURE.

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/04/13 09:32 PM

here's the 2 originals that I have. One says pressure vacuum and the other says not vented. No challenger or cuda ever came with a vented cap, none. Matter of fact no mopar came with a vented cap after 1970.

I believe both caps to be made the exact same only with different gaskets just like the aftermarket caps.

See the different gaps from the locking levers and the rubber seal?

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/04/13 09:40 PM

Your supposed to have a small amount of pressure in your gas tank on a warm day when you open it, up to 1.5 PSI, your fuel system is a vapor saver and is designed to be under pressure. That way you don't smell gas in your garage or anywhere else.

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/04/13 09:43 PM

Thanks for enlighten me and for the pics.

13 bucks here: Stant 10571 Fuel Tank Cap | eBay but also listed as not compatible for 70 Challengers.

Good to know, many thanks.

Challenger1, I think the gasket on your "pressure vacuum" cap is messed up. Here's a side by side with two NOS ones.

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/04/13 11:57 PM

Challenger1 - Do you think the gasket on the Stant cap will work on the original mopar locking cap? I too have a cracked gasket. Thanks

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/05/13 12:20 AM

I did try that years ago without any sucess, it wouldn't fit right.(aftermarket gasket)

Both of your caps above are made for the filler neck on the left in my picture above. Neither would fit the neck on the right.

Yes the pressure vacuum on the right is messed up and junk. It originally fit the filler neck on the right in my photo above.

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/05/13 03:04 AM

Ah crud... I thought this was an ebody one... guess not. The rubber seal isn't that big.

Posted By: YYZ

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/05/13 03:21 AM

It looks like E-body to me, just that the seal is pretty much smoked (along with the rusty steel)

They can be disassembled for cleaning, re-plating and re-lubrication.
Posted By: Challenger 1

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/05/13 03:39 AM

Yup it looks like a E body to me? Isn't E body the only car to use a cap like that?

That one looks like it would fit the filler neck on the right in my photo above, it's the "other" locking filler cap I was talking about. I think there's 2 different rubber seals installed on the same locking cap to fit the 2 different filler necks?

And not vented says to me that it was 1970 cap without N-95.

Ah, so I'm missing the second rubber piece then?

What do these go for?

See the pics, I don't think I get pressure in the gas tank as the tube itself is vented. The small vent tube goes under the car into the brace (don't know the exact word/have another pic to show)

Good point, yours is a 70, non N-95. After that they went to the Vapor Saver system. Good pictures of a 70 setup that uses the "not vented" cap.

I have one of these I want to use on a car. Got it without a key so I didn't even know if it worked. Took it apart and had a key made. Now that it is put back together it doesn't lock. I don't remember dropping anything or if that is why they sold it. Anyone ever take one of these apart and have some pictures for me to see if I am missing something?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/11/13 10:44 PM

when you say "it doesn't lock" are you saying that when you install it in the filler neck it doesnt lock closed ??? Or are you saying it doesnt lock when your playing with it in your hands ??

It only locks when installed and you have to have the correct cap for either ECS or CAS systems...

Here's a pressure vacuum cap from a 71 Challenger. Bob, do the tabs draw inward when you push the button? When its locked, I'm guessing the button doesn't move (and the tabs don't draw inward).

Look to see if the tab is broken. Mine wouldn't lock either and found that without this tab in place it doesn't. I had to make a part by hand and now it locks.

Bob - How hard was it to get a key made? I don't have one for my cap either.
Posted By: YYZ

Re: Locking gas cap for '70 Challenger - 03/12/13 04:49 PM

FWIW most of the keys are Briggs+Stratton (BASCO) lock cylinders so the key blanks were relatively common

I would try an older hardware store or locksmith first for the blanks

BASCO was sold a few years ago and there does not seem to be support for legacy products now.

I went to the locksmith shop and told him to call me when he was done. He said just wait a couple of minutes. And that was all it took for him to make me two keys for $15.00. I thought that was a pretty good deal. The guy just looked at the thing, programmed his machine and presto... just right!!
