Help Me Figure Out My 1968 Build Date - 08/28/08 11:01 PM

OK all you numbers guys, I need help with this

The build date on my '68 Coronet fender tag is barely legible, it LOOKS like 514 but Im told the VIN is too high and I only have parts of the build sheet. Could it be 814?-but I though the cut off was the first week of August? Its a St Louis car, the sequence # is 246XXX, and the VIN is WS23L8G282XXX. If you think you can nail it down to within a day or two for me, I'll PM the rest of the VIN.

And just out of curiosity, does anyone know of a higher 1968 St Louis VIN?

i dont think 514 = may 15 1968 is a out of line for a vin ending in 282XXX

Mine vin is 243XXX 5-21-68 production

yeah that would knock out a May build date wouldnt it.

Anyone know how late in the year STL went? It would be cool to know that I had one of the last '68s off the assembly line.

why not?

depends on the plant-I have a '68 Valiant with a 5/20 build date and a 385XXX VIN from Hamtramack, where they built a lot more cars.

I don't know how late they built st.louis r/t's. The earliest I'm aware of is 927

I'd guess 714 is the SPD, & 7/14/68 was a Saturday.

The latest '68 Coronet R/Ts I know of are 8g275xxx (701) & 8g277xxx (703)

My 68 with 2821xx has 715 SPD last day at St. Louis,28205x was 715 as well

so 7/15 was the last production day at St Louis? That was a Monday. Maybe they were filling the last orders of the year?

I guess the "5" could be a 7, the 1 in the middle is the only number thats at all legible.

dbishop-would you mind PMing me your VIN and/or sequence # from the fender tag?

Did you try reading the tag from the back? Sometimes the numbers become a little more legible from the back side.

My bee is 28219x 715 SPD, made mistake on other car vin on that RT 28208x 715 SPD is correct. Where do you fit in?

Did not see this one myself ,was listed online as WM21H8G282026 715 SPD. HELP ???ANYBODY? What are numbers stamped into finished tag next to and or under unpainted fender tag screw? 2 maybe 3 numbers .green tag above has them and inspector marks as well?

I've seen those embossed numbers but haven't a clue as to what they represent. The example I have is embossed 2 or 3 digits 3(or8), 4, and the last is illegible. The sequence does not correlate to any offered options and all I can think is that it is some form of inspectors mark.

If you are talking about the three digit stamp in the upper right hand corner on a tag from a ST. Louis built car...they are an inspection stamp.

The 3 digit numbers are on all G tags,the numbers change, 821 SPD had 3 4 ? ,311 3 2 ?, 403 5 0 ? 604 3 2 ?, 715 3 7 ? .This dept. or persons always did there job? On all cars? All other marks/ punches seem to be more random? Do all 1969 G tags have them as well?

The sequence # my 68 Coronet built in St. Louis starts with 274 and build date is 6/26. So, your St. Louis car is earlier than that probably around April. of 68'.

My mistake. number starting with 282 would make that a July car; maybe 2nd week of July 1968 making that the last of the 68's to comeout before the 1969 model year transition.

on a b'cast sheet:
SEQUENCE NUMBER - plant specific reference to when/where the car was built
SHIPPING ORDER - order number from the "order form" that spec'd the build of a specific car, also includes SPD (Scheduled Production Date)
SEQUENTIAL NUMBER - part of VIN assigned prior to production for registation/title requirements

thanks! mines 282XXX so the "514" has got to be a 715.

Anyone know if that was the last day of production?

Mine came with a Hurst shifter from the factory (as opposed to the Inlands the early '68s had) it has the REVERSE light in the dash, black door buttons, and door locks on the ends of the doors-what other late '68 stuff should it have?

Dan yes sir 715 is last SPD at St.Louis. Any 715 car may exit final line 712 thru 718 (2 maybe 3 day window both ways,did not come down line by VIN or Scheduled Production Date.Was it Shipping Order Number(body stamp#)??? Then normal mixing at the metal shop,painted body bank , trim line,repair banks,quality assurance line, etc.Input Anyone Please?
