Restoring Red Circle Dog Dishes... - 08/27/10 01:14 PM

Any tips or trade secrets?

I just got a set back from a polisher and they look real nice. Now I just need to repaint the circle and the blackened areas. I have a couple of questions:

1. What color black did the factory use...it appears to be a flat or satin black

2. Same ? but for the red circle...

3. How did the factory do these? These reliefs are really in there and it looks like I will need to do these very carefully by hand. I am sure a mass produced product from a car factory had a slick process to do these on the quick. Just curious what, if any , process did thy use back then.

About 5 years ago someone posted their restoration on their redlined dogdishes- they had come up with a template of the various patterns on the dogdish and had them cut out from outdoor adhesive-backed vinyl in the appropriate colors. Use soapy water to place the patterns where the painted areas would be. The results looked pretty good to me. Good enuf where I'm going to try it with my dogdishes....

I made the cad file after a few poor attempts at painting them.

The hubcap in the photo has red paint instead of vinyl since I could not find any vinyl that matched the tomato soup red color they came with. They do make such a color I'm sure, but they guy who cut these for me didn't have any in stock back then so I went with a nissan flame red enamel.

Masking the circle is easy if you use electrical tape since it's super flexible.

Here's what I've done.
Get an old turntable, and rotate the centered cap, then with a felt tip make two rings that are the inner and outer edges of the paint.
Remove cap and carefully paint outside the painted areas with "frisket" then tape off and spray with matched paint.
The frisket can also be used for masking off the black painted areas of any trim. As it's sort of a rubbery material that after paint is dry, pull the tape, and rub off any left over frisket, perfect edges every time.

Wow that looks real nice!

Good ideas all around. I was sort of thinking about using those paint pens you can get at a good craft store, but wanted to get some other opinions first.

thanks,
