'Cuda Front Elastomeric Bumper -How to Refinish?

'Cuda Front Elastomeric Bumper -How to Refinish? - 06/23/10 06:38 PM

I just scored an original Cuda front rubber bumper with mounting brackets. It is in good shape only needing stripping and a repaint. Could anyone who has worked with these before share some do's and don't's on stripping, prepping and painting?
Also - I have read here that there is a difference between '70 & '71. How can I check mine? Any help greatly appreciated

im not an expert but i know the difference between 70-71 is how wide the gap is below.as in front of the nr,plate and then to the sides.maybe the road-lamps will interfere(dont think so).but maybe it like this=the -70 has a wider lower plastic valance insert, and the -71 has a narrower?anyway thats where they differ,in the lower cut-out section off the bumper.hope you got the right one

Bryan,

Nice score. The front bumpers are different between 70 and 71, with supposedly early 71 cars getting 70 bumpers. The difference is in the lower lip and how it lines up with the front valence. I think 71 had a small opening than 70 IIRC.

Anyway, if the lower part lines up "close" to your valence opening you have the right one.

As for getting off old paint, I would wet sand it.

Thanks Morty/Swede
Good info - I will measure tonight and compare to the valence opening on my '70 and hope it matches.

Help-
I would like to strip this bumper myself. Wanted to bump this up again. Would like for someone with experience to comment on proper way to strip old paint from it. I would like to do all I can myself before turning it over to painter.
